I had a girlfriend from the SF bay area, she used to work at a large hospital in the city years ago. She was up here visiting me and told me she carried a gun in her purse when going to work.

Honestly, it's not something that's ever come up with any local women I've ever dated, but I can understand someone living in pretty much any big US city wanting to carry. And frankly when it's someone you care about you want them to be able to protect themselves. As long as they know how to use the thing that is.

Up here in Canada things like mace, bear spray, tasers, etc, are illegal, only cops can use them.

I hear you, but maybe you can get a safe with a keypad combination that only you
know and put the gun in the safe in the bed room.

Practice hitting the key code in the dark and you are set.

Then periodically search your kids room and computer for a list of numbers they
have been trying.

Yeah, that safe combination needs to be 5 digits and it can't start with 0 or 1.

If you think your kid read this thread however then start it with 0 or 1.

They wouldn't need a gun if they stayed in the kitchen at all times.

And if a woman ever gets assaulted in her own kitchen, she has everything she needs to defend herself there: pots and pans, knifes, pepper, boiling water, etc..

Very true.

I was just going to post, I don't think I would want to be in any daily situations where I felt so unsafe I would need to carry a gun. I would change my living arrangements. Move, change job, etc.

I'm not afraid of handling a gun, or shooting someone threatening my life. I just would not want to live that way.

So having a gun to defend yourself is OK but your daughter isn't worth the same?

There are also biometric solutions which do not require a combination or key and are way faster to access than either.

It's not necessarily that you live somewhere that you expect to need a gun, but rather you want to have it in the off chance that you will need it. I wear a seatbelt when I drive, not because I think I'm going to smash into a tree, but it could happen. I keep a spare set of keys at home, not because I think I'm going to lose the ones I carry. I have smoke alarms, not because I expect my house to catch on fire. etc., etc. As they say, I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.

Well I don't think anything is wrong with females carrying guns. It's just me. I can't even find my keys in my purse within a couple seconds, let alone pull out a gun. lol. I am a small chick, I hope to never be in a situation at all where some thug is attacking me but I keep a low pro mostly in this world. I know it happens everywhere, but I don't know that carrying a gun will save me.

I'd carry a gun before I'd trust any cop though! yeah

The subject line is false, a blatant lie. I don't see anywhere in the article that the sheriff suggested that ALL women get trained and licensed to carry. Under the law, many couldn't. As a CCL holder and the webmaster of a gun site, I don't think ALL people should have a gun, and the NRA agrees. In fact, whole I was running a gun related site, there was a period of time I got rid of my weapons because we had small children and one adult in home who shouldn't have access to weapons.

My posts on my board explain some of the considerations I believe should go in to decision. I suspect the sheriff would pretty much agree with the factors I suggest considering. The article most certainly does NOT say he suggested that ALL women should be armed.

To out and out LIE about what the sheriff said strongly suggests that someone doesn't have anything to support their agenda that is true. All they can do is make up blatant lies.

I distorted nothing. There are MANY ways to make sure your child doesn't have access to your guns. I grew up in a home with several of them and never had access without adult supervision.

If she realizes that having a gun is important for her own protection then she should feel the same about having the ability to protect her family. Getting rid of a firearm out of concern for your kid getting a hold of it is a bullshit excuse and IMHO opens the family to more harm than good.

you will see when you and that hot wifey have kids. they are into everything and nothing you say stops the curiosity. even with gun safety training accidents still happen. if i kept it in a safe as mentioned i don't think i could get it out in time (you know me, i am not the calm and collected type). i literally slept with my gun when i was in college and living alone. i had it under the pillow next to me with the safety on. i now sleep with a kubotan between my mattress and box spring and i've been trained to use it effectively.

Interesting.

If someone takes the training and has a weapon, then decides that in their personal situation they'd rather not until a situation changes, I suspect they understand their own situation much better than you or I do. That doesn't sound like someone who is completely misinformed or uninformed making knee jerk decisions, but rather someone considering various aspects of their own situation. Certainly not everyone should be armed all the time. It's wise to consider children in the home and whether or not they tend to get into things they shouldn't, whether the adults in the home are responsible, etc. Where I live in Texas, there are plenty of young people who are more responsible with firearms than my ex-wife may have been. It's all situation dependent.

Frankly, Aaron, if you aren't in the habit of considering the totality of any situation, that's more concerning. Do you shoot a guy coming toward you with a knife? NO, you don't, until you check what's BEHIND the attacker. You better make sure nobody, such as a family member, is in the line of fire or moving toward it. That's the kind of thing that worries me when I read a gun owner dismissing the idea that it's important to consider all of the circumstances.

It might be wise for you, as a gun owner, to think about being more discerning before black and white thinking with a weapon gets you in trouble.

KelTec has some nice pink CCW pistols. I really respect your decision to carefully consider your personal situation, though. You know your family, your neighborhood, your daughter, and yourself far better than Aaron or I do, so I trust you will make wise decisions for you and yours as times and situations change.

thanks for the info and the respect when my daughter was very young but in school there was more than one firearm accident within the community that scared me out of having a gun in the house.

I noticed that too.

My bedroom furniture was custom made to hide my rifles and handguns. Asked my kids when they grew up. They swear the hunted hard and never found them. 2 secret panels in the bed platform and one in the headboard, one in a bedside table.

Thank you for educating me about guns and how I should and should not handle things. I now see the light.

Praise baby Jebus!

I spent time with my daughter at the range, it was a monthly thing till she went in the Navy, now she has a carry permit in Washington State.

comparing gun ownership to seat belts and smoke alarms is out right fucking mad... try again...

seatbelts save lives, so do smoke alarms, the numbers are there and proven... those things do not kill people wrongfully (almost never, i'm sure there are occasional malfunctions)

guns for security is ABSOLUTELY debatable without question. In the right hands? Of course it would help, in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it? Completely reckless and dangerous.

My god you're right, what was I thinking?!! I've been here since day one but only now realize that threads must be "worthy" before posting. THANK YOU.

Maybe I should look up 'potter' threads to take a cue on what worthy threads look like.

Again, my deepest thanks.

I agree.
I used to carry a .38 when I lived in Miami, actually had to pull it out on 2 different guys, 2 different occasions.

With all due respect you're being a nit-picking idiot. Re-read the article. It says "Women" need to get guns, "women" should walk in groups and purchase guns, etc. It doesn't say "some women", it simply says women. That says to me that it's probably a safe inference he means all women should carry.

But relax your bad self, I actually support the notion that women be allowed to do something proactive to afford themselves some measure of protection. Anyone paying even remote attention to the news for any length of time knows there are a lot of abusers, molesters, and would-be rapists out there, many of them getting away with that and a lot more. I'd actually like nothing better than to hear about a few of them getting their nuts blown off by their target victim packing heat.

... as long as there are training and gun safety requirements and mandatory courses in place. I'm certainly not advocating that just anyone should be able to walk in off the street and buy a gun and be allowed to carry. That would be stupid. My apologies if my evil thread title gave off that impression.
