Holder just said he promises Snowden won't be Tortured if he comes back to the US...

I'm not crazy about either of them, but I didn't realize that was the hold up...

Manning was tortured for years, falls under 'pretrial punishment' and is very much illegal.

then you get into all those rendition issues and how 'standing for 16 hours a day isn't torture'

and your credibility is zero.

Fuck Manning.

If you are a flight risk or a danger to society, they can lock you up until the trial. In this case, he is a threat to national security. I would imagine they have every right to lock him up.

At the same time he is also a flight risk - dozens of companies would love to have access to information he has in his head, and wikkileaks would love to snag him up and move him to a country where we can't get to him.

why not? wtf diff does it make now? sending a "pinky swear we ain't gonna harm a hair on his pretty head* makes everybody go face palm. i mean really, is holder thinkgin someone will read that and go oh, ok, and pick up a phone and send snowden on over?

if holden was serious, then send someone very important over there to escort him back. not this passing notes shit.

i gots to thinkin, remembered that like a week ago snowden went on record saying he is *torture proof* in regards to any entity trying to coax the info out of him that he claims he knows. i wonder if this is a silly reaction to that

:::::::
Security experts say National Security Agency information leaker Edward Snowden doesn’t know what he’s talking about when he claims that no one could force him to reveal what he knows. Not even a torture expert.
Mr. Snowden made the claim in a letter to a U.S. senator, published in The Guardian and by Business Insider: “No intelligence service — not even our own — has the capacity to compromise the secrets I continue to protect.

The purpose was to not let Russia use the death penalty or torture as an excuse to not hand him over. Basic common sense.

It was a statement made (along with others) to head off any argument for asylum... which has to have a basis in international law and adhere to treaties and agreements. It was likely a statement that was mutually agreed to beforehand as it benefits Russia.

As i told everyone time and time again, Russia would milk him for all he had... then they'll let him go. Most likely Snowden will be turned over to the USA as no one needs to headache and Russia has milked it for all they can in terms of sabre rattling and posturing.

They said he could stay "so long as he stops....". In other words, they gave themselves an out. The get points with partners for romancing the idea of him staying... they leave an out to kick him out at any time.

He won't stay in Russia. Thats not going to happen. His ONLY value to any foreign country is to allow them a bit of posturing. Once thats spent... he's done for.

i have no idea what he going to do, i doubt he does, he's so far in over his head, it's become a joke. his fucking dad was on the today show looking as retarded as matt does.

nevertheless, putin/russia already rubbed america's nose in the poo, there's the HUGE summit between us and them coming up and nobody wants anything to go wrong there, us or putin, according to what i've read. snowden threw a huge wrench into relations prior to that.

it's over with russia and snowden now. they can't move on him or risk upsetting the balance.

the holden letter re: torture was for americans, that's why it was made public.

I think the big thing is to understand that all parties did all the math right away. These are intelligence agencies of powerful countries, playing chess with each other. This game was already played and won... the winner just hasn't been announced yet. Everything you see is theater for the masses. All parties fully knew and understood what the consequences were in their actions and decisions. about 1/2 a dozen banana republics got to pretend to thumb their nose at the USA for the masses at home. Russia got to agitate the USA while buying time with Snowden, interrogating him and getting anything he had of value. There is nothing left at this point other than symbolism and symbolic statements. No intelligence agency in the world truly gives a fuck about one mans "rights". His only value has always been that the USA wanted him... other countries could pretend to defy the US or take a stand and Russia could take their usual jabs.

Holders statements were to assure the world that Snowden would be treated fairly. He would not face the death penalty (another reason Russia would not be allowed to turn him over) and that he would face a fair trial in civilian court (concerns of retribution of the government etc are other reasons under the law to not turn him over). The purpose of the letter to the Russian Ministry of Justice is to head off all the legit reasons for which an asylum request might be granted. Russia does not give a fuck about anyone's rights. They just need an out and the US Government just gave them another one and everyone gets to save face... shake hands and move on. Putin would love to have a reason to stand up and say "we as a nation, respect the rule of law... and therefore,...".

This was not a good sign for Snowden.

yes, i thanked you elsewhere for paying close enough attention to me and my posts to do an evaluation, unfortunately, i am completey unaware of you or your postings other than noticing your recent trolling of me. so fill me in on when you got so butthurt over me.

nevertheless, you can continue, it's your call, as you can clearly see in this thread, i respond to your trolling me, you then do your profiling. your're prolly the only one who can't see that, prolly busy with your analysis of me. either way, i can carry on an adult convo, like i am with the sqeauler or i can sink to your level. your call.

but don't keep getting butthurt because i reply back rubbing your nose in your stupid. it's embarrasing.

the timing of the letter is important, wouldnt you agree?. snowden said just days ago the comment about being torture proof. this is in reponse to that. a month into this, all the diplomacy was happening over the 1st few days snowden got there. other than the latin america silliness yet nothgin from holder about this or anything in fact.

the funny thing, which i neglected to mention in my previous comment, is now snowden is saying he wants to stay and live in russia and study russian culture.

You are paying a lot more attention to this than me. I don't know about the timing of anything but I am fairly confident in the sequence of events and how it will play out and whats happened so far. My view is that what ever will happen was decided long ago.

I read about this letter and considered that to be a matter of course as part of shutting down an asylum request.

Every thing in the press to me is just theater and posturing. As I said from the start, Snowden was fucked and trapped... and trapped with people that will make very sure they've gotten everything he has, then throw him away because at that point, he has zero value to anyone.

All we are seeing is the second 1/2 of the 3rd and final act of the play. The hero's light has faded. The story is dying. Julianne Assange took a symbolic and futile shot and missed. A few banana republics had their 15 seconds. Russia has milked what little political capital they can from him... The US is trying to get him back without coming off as (or be perceived as) hostile savages - which is tough, given the US created this mess.

All that is left is for the final back and forth of face saving for Russia/US and Snowden will be en-route and in custody by the FBI and on his was to the USA before press knows he left the airport.

There is a very large grey area on what is considered "torture".
