some thoughts:

1. Many belive the bible was written 200 years after the death of jesus. so people must have had very good memories back then. think about it, i bet if you chatted to somone for five mins you could not remember word perfect what they said. they did not record what he said. chances are his followers could not even read or write.

2. It was not in english. Its been translated. And the meaning of words change. Take the word gay, it used to mean happy. Niggar in old english meant devil, and so on. Thus what may have been written 2000 years ago may mean somthing different today.

There's evidence for a historical Jesus, not a lot and it's been debated and still is but most Bible scholars are of the opinion he was a real person.

This passage is the strongest evidence there is for a historical Jesus, written in Antiquities of the Jews by the historian Flavius Josephus in the first century.

I don't think a bunch of Jews got together and created a fictional character - I believe they created fiction around a real person.

This is pretty much the truth, the writers of the Bible wrote metaphorically, it didn't matter to them what was fact or fiction, they weren't trying to delude people. People were not sceptical of anything two thousand years ago, this made it easy for religious/political leaders to persuade people that the scriptures were factual. The Old Testament is more a political manifesto than anything else, its purpose was to give the Israelites an identity, to bond together to create and defend a nation in a part of the world where they were surrounded by much bigger, older,stronger nations/tribes continually at war for more land and riches. The Old Testament reads to me like The Bad News Bears Go To Canaan.

I read an interesting thing not long ago, that until a culture has a written multi-syllabic language where the eyes/brain can follow sequentially that people are unable to discern fantasy from reality.

I shouldn't have used the term 'Bible scholars' - I'm not talking about theologians, I'm talking about those who study the world and era the Bible came from through the disciplines of archaeology and history, piecing together how the Bible came to be. Of course the supernatural stuff is a fairytale, but it's a fascinating endeavor to unearth the truth of who the people the peoples mentioned in the Bible were, which events are historical or fiction, which Bible characters were real or not. Archaeologists have dug up the Biblical lands a hundred times over looking for traces of Moses and the Exodus and found nothing, so these academics have pretty much concluded that Moses was not a real historical person and this great Exodus of enslave Jews from Egypt never happened.

And for how backward and primitive those people were, here we are 4,000 years later the majority of this planet in 2014 worships that same God those primitive people conceived as the Creator of the Universe - Christianity, Islam and Judaism, all worship the same god, Yahweh the god of ancient Israel.

That's almost as unbelievable and supernatural as anything in the Bible.

Word for word is how it is supposed to be read as it is designed to scare and control the masses. Dissecting the historical truth is almost impossible with interpretation issues between scrolls from ancient Hebrew via other older languages to modern English.
Speaking of word for word. If someone was a virgin in biblical times they were unwed but an immaculate conception has more merit. With every ones vast medical knowledge in biblical times they could probably spot a virgin a cubit away.

The bible is a piece of fiction, partially based on true events, all of which were embellished or changed completely in order to fit the doctrine of Christianity. I'll tell you one thing. If Jesus did exist, he was not fucking European, the way he has been portrayed physically throughout history. He was born in or around Israel, so he would have looked completely middle eastern. Also, back then there were no condoms, so nearly everyone was either from a large family or was an illegitimate child. My point is that Jesus likely had lots of brothers and sisters and lots of children with different women.

His miracles are easily accounted for by his intelligence. Village is sick and dying? Well back then people were dumb as rocks and would shit and piss at the top of a hill and take water from the bottom. One simple change, and wollah, village is not sick anymore.

Simple things like that. Spreading common sense, which at the time was an act of genius.

Anyway, about the bible, many theories revolving it. The original version was supposedly put together by a group of mushroom cultists and took them hundreds of years. They made it with the plan to control masses.
Later it was warped and different religions were morphed into it, stories from different cultures added to it.

But for the GFY Historians...this is an interesting in depth look at the Bible's actual history:

He was a "Christian Scholar" in Alexandria Egypt (that would probably get you killed in 2014 by all the muslim zealots in the middle east), and was just one of the MANY guys who decided which scriptures would be included and which ones didn't "fit" what the Pope wanted to be in the bible.

That book that we all grew up with is a carefully constructed piece of mind control that has been tweaked for over 2000 years.
And we all grew up watching our parents, grandparents, and the rest of our family "believing" in it. So we were conditioned from birth.

It's no wonder that even intelligent people take pause and go "I wonder if it's really true". It's hard to overcome that kind of brainwashing.

But if you research it you find out quick that the stories that were told around the campfire by that small Jewish tribe were much older stories that had already been passed down from other cultures and plagarized to fit the Jewish religion and later Christianity.

And if you really step back and use your brain and not your heart...you don't even have to research it. The sheer absurdity of what the bible (or any religions manifesto) says is beyond belief.

Until I was 5 or 6 years old I had no idea what religion I was born into, there was no religion mentioned in my house yet by the time I was 4 years old and aware of the world around me I knew God and had my own conception of him. Where did I get it from? Then part of the morning cartoon show I watched religiously was a stop animation show called 'Davey and Goliath', produced by the same company that made 'Gumby and Pokey', it was about a little boy and his dog Goliath. I had no idea that show was funded by a Christian organization. Every episode was some life lesson the boy would find out came from Jesus and the Bible. When I'd sneeze my mother would say 'God bless you', I'd hear other adults say things like 'God dammit' 'God willing' 'I hope to God' etc - it's everywhere in our culture, whether your parents are religious or not a kid is going to have some belief in this person/thing named God very early in life. And it's very hard to shake - I bet the majority of agnostics and atheists when they or a loved one is facing death say some kind of prayer to God out of fear and desperation. Most wouldn't admit it.

Mutt, hit the nail on the head by pointing out the absurdity of modern man "worshiping" anything. I'll say it again: it was a small tribe of people who had ZERO education (not even any education for the time they lived in: The Bronze Age). They told "stories" to their kids. Hundreds of years later...actual people who could read and write sat down and wrote the stories down. Back then, people believed in "magic" and "miracles" and other assorted nonsense. In 2014...I can not fathom why people would believe in any of this crap. Or the Muslim religion. Or Buddhism. Or anything else. The only conclusion I can come to is that human beings are self-aware. And we know of our own mortality and can't stand the thought of it. So we make up stories of an "after-life" Deep down we all know it's bullshit. That's why we grieve when a loved one dies. If we REALLY believed in an afterlife then "dying" wouldn't mean shit to any of us. Matter of fact we would all be hoping for that to happen as quickly as possible. But deep down we know better. I think most people are like I USED to be. Hedging their bets. lol I used to have the attitude that "it couldn't hurt" to "believe" in God "just in case". heh-heh And if it makes people feel better then so be it. But "The Bible"? As I said...stories told to kids from a primitive tribe. Written down hundreds of years later. Then, believe it or not...an EGYPTIAN decided which books of the bible to include and which ones NOT to include. Kind of hard to believe that a guy from a culture that would soon after turn full Muslim once did that. And then, of course...hundreds of years after all of that, it was re-written again at the order of King James to fit HIS idea of what it should say.
