How do you eat sushi?

Solo or family style?

Family style. One of my favorite things about food is sharing the joy with others.

Family style is best, but good fresh sushi is always good, even if it has to be solo.

If you ever have the chance, check out the family style at Maggiano's (here's their family style menu). Everything is made in-house from fresh ingredients. Also, for very large parties, they basically bring out the whole menu, and keep it coming.

Almost forgot the very best part: dishes brought to the table that you don't finish will be boxed up for you to take home, so you get to gorge yourself with excellent food and will likely have a whole other meal on top of that.

*btw, to answer your question. Personally, I like sushi, but not too many people I know share the interest.

Japanese style solo or with friends/family. Small amount of soy sauce, fresh ginger and occasionally wasabi mixed with the soy sauce. Fingers preferred.

Tried introducing some friends to the family style idea. They couldn't understand sharing. Or pouring your beer for you. Not considering them friends anymore.

Actually, the fish is deepfrozen right after the catch which kills off the worm eggs. It's quite save to eat in regular/good restaurants. Considering what you can get from other kinds of foods it's no more dangerous and actually healthy.

Sushi is raw fish on rice and Sashimi is just the raw fish. But it doesn't actually have to be fish...they also have other varieties like shellfish or vegetables (cucumber for example which is quite good!).

Also, traditionally Sushi is eaten without soya sauce while Sashimi is dipped into. Though I prefer dipping my Sushi as well.

Going a little into history, they don't have salmon or California roll in Japan. These are westernized styles (taste great too of course). Salmon is a cold water fish and can't be caught in the Pacific.

Honestly, don't deprive yourself of this great food. It's actually a lot saver than a medium rare burger (E. coli).

We get fresh salmon here fairly regularly. They bring it in from Norway mostly. I wish someone would make California roll though I suspect you can get it in Shibuya or Roppongi.

By the way, the reason why it's safe to eat a beef steak rare and a beef burger not is that E. coli bacteria reside on the outside of the meat applied through cross-contamination due to bad hygiene standards at the processing facility. Even if you order your steak rare, the bacteria are killed by scorching the outside of the steak.

Of course, burgers being minced meat the bacteria are redistributed throughout the meat. Only a thoroughly cooked burger is a safe burger.

E. coli is actually not that dangerous for healthy adults, it presents real danger only for older people and kids ... at least this is what I know, stand to be corrected. On the other hand, when you cook pork, you HAVE to make sure it's well cooked or you can get majorly fucked.

That's right, but you don't really want to spend a week on the toilet if you ingest a high enough amount of E. coli bacteria

Yeah pork can have a variety of bacteria harmful to humans. That's because genetically speaking they are quite similar to humans and many stems of bacteria they carry can be transmitted to humans. And since they are omnivore, they are fed all kinds of scraps unsafe for human consumption. ALWAYS cook through thoroughly. Luckily, these bacteria are not very resistant to heat.

I think it's not a matter of rules but of showing respect by at least trying to do it the right way. Many Japanese restaurants have staff of Japanese descent who still take pride in their tradation and culture. Personally, I would feel bad in intentionally offending them.

Of course, if you go to one of those fast food Sushi restaurants it wouldn't matter

FDA lowered pork cooking guidelines from 165F to 145F somewhat recently, so even that isn't true any more
http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/Fo.../UCM260394.pdf

if you are that worried about raw fish I wouldn't really eat any other meat either...

If I wanted to play with food I'd go watch derby.

That being said, guess I better either cross Japan off of my list of countries to visit, or just stick with Mickey D's.

You can also use the traditional woodsticks. I find the sensation quite pleasant as opposed to metal cutlery. Sort of like caviar doesn't taste that good with a metal spoon.

Baddog, I stand corrected. Salmon actually does thrive in the Pacific as well. It's just that I once read that salmon isn't normally served in Japanese Sushi restaurants and it's more of a Western thing like California Roll. Maybe Captain Kawaii could clarify that?

I agree 100%. Even in the exceptional case that you do get worms from eating Sushi (which is highly unlikely in any respectable Sushi restaurant), they are not life threatening and can be easily treated with over-the-counter Mebendazole.

Also, worm eggs in fish are visible with the naked eye, so you would have to be double unlucky (contaminated fish and blind chef).

But how did your reading of the Japanese not eating salmon lead to salmon not being available in the Pacific?

Because Atlantic salmon is a cold water fish and cannot survive in warm waters. The salmon species found in the Pacific is called Oncorhynchus (Pacific salmon). I was not aware that there were two salmon species plus my previous reading that salmon is not (or was not) being traditionally served in Japanese Sushi restaurants let me to that assumption without checking. Sorry for spreading false information.
