U.S. job growth surges, unemployment rate near six-year low

Things seem to be moving forward.... slowly....

(Reuters) - U.S. employment growth jumped in June and the jobless rate closed in on a six-year low, decisive evidence the economy was moving forward at a brisk clip after a surprisingly big slump at the start of the year.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 288,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent, its lowest level since September 2008, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Data for April and May were revised to show a total of 29,000 more jobs created than previously reported.

This is like comparing dog shit to waffles. At one time we we had waffles... overnight those waffles turned into dog shit. And now? That dog shit is slowly morphing back into waffles.... only the waffles we are presented with today have dog shit smeared all inside of them.

Does it taste better than dog shit? Sure. Is it waffles? Nope. It's dog shit and waffles. Still tastes like dog shit. In this case? Monkey shit.

These figures are propped up by the continued importation of cheap labor:

"According to a major new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), net employment growth in the United States since 2000 has gone entirely to immigrants, legal and illegal."

What Baddog said. These talking head news media outlets are fucking click baiting douchebags.

Fact of the matter is:

Unemployment "ACTUAL" is more than 19%. Very few are eligible now. I know 4 people that can't even apply that are on peoples couches who lost their jobs over 2 years ago and can't find anything worth doing.

The jobs that are being created are not awesome jobs. Minimum wage and service industry, etc.

These number releases are meant to do one thing; get people to start spending money again to keep the economy healthy and the machine moving, that's it.

They are one giant lie.

More people are working at Walmart than ever before! And Walgreen's is moving their business outside the country. And they are doing it because of taxes and regulations.

Its a fake recovery courtesy of the Fed.

They have spent trillions of dollars the last 5 yrs to prop up
US Treasuries and stock markets plus giving almost free loans to large banks etc.

When all the QE ends we will see what real economy looks like.

To me the bigger number is underemployment which is still at 15.7%. That number includes people who are unemployed and those who are working part time, but are actively seeking full time employment.

Then let's start basing unemployment figures on the "actual" rate.

We've always based unemployment figures in the same exact way and I am wondering why we are suddenly discussing this new "actual" rate. Why didn't we discuss this back in 2008, 2009, and 2010 when unemployment was at it's high point? What was the "actual" rate at the high point?

At the same time, is the "actual" rate the real rate? How can that be? I have a friend of mine who has been unemployed for over a decade - he isn't looking for a job so why should we count him as unemployed?

I thought this when I first read the article this morning on the crapper. Nearly half of the American public voted for Romney, so let's just say roughly half of you dislike Obama so that's why you are all about "this isn't the real figure". Me, I'm an optimist. I want things to get better. I could care less what bitch is int he Oval Office, I just want things to get better.

And I want to believe unemployment is falling.

Doesn't the government count 20 hours per week as being employed when counting the number of people employed and not as being under employed...and hasn't this been the formula used by past administrations?

Even when we look at the "real" unemployment figures, it's still down from the high point.

I should have said doesn't this administration...as well as past administrations...count those working 20 hours per week as having full time employment?

I don't think so. They consider a person "employed" even if they only work 1 hour per week. Obamacare considers you to be a full-time employee if you work more than 30 hours per week. If you work less you are considered to be part-time.

I'm not certain how past administrations have counted part-time workers.

Well I misstated again as I said fully employed when I should have said employed...thus someone working 20 hours per week counts the same in the government employment numbers as someone working forty hours per week?

Which means I did not misspeak in the first place. Oh well.

Correct. My understanding is that anyone who worked even if it was just 1 hour and received pay for their work is counted as being employed.

Listening to CNN today and they gave that number for job growth as well.

Then they followed it up with the FACT that the actual number of people in the job force who are actively working is 62.8% the lowest since 1979 (35 years).

That means that people are just not working anymore.

That would explain these stats:
Welfare Statistics
Total number of Americans on welfare 12,800,000
Total number of Americans on food stamps 46,700,000
Total number of Americans on unemployment insurance 5,600,000
Percent of the US population on welfare 4.1 %
Total government spending on welfare annually (not including food stamps or unemployment) $131.9 billion

I'd say that instead of figuring out new ways to spend money that we don't have as a country...the U.S. govt. should be making America THE place to do business so that businesses will bring real jobs back.

Here is the actual employment rate from 1990 to 2013. Look at it for yourself and answer your own question. Oh fuck it, I'll answer it for you...because people were EMPLOYED.

I think they could do things.

As I have said before...when I lived in South Carolina, BMW built a plant in the Greenville/Spartanburg area where I lived.

They built it there for 2 big reasons:
No union.
And the state gave them a ton of tax breaks.

The result? It created a boon to the economy in the upstate of South Carolina. The whole area was traditionally a textile workplace. That got moved to China because it was just too expensive to operate there anymore.

The state learned a valuable lesson from that and didn't make the same mistake twice.

It not only landed hundreds of jobs that paid higher than ANYTHING in that area...but also raised all boats by the resulting money. New restaurants, nightclubs, grocery stores, construction, road construction, etc., etc.

That opened my eyes to what could be.
All it takes is for the govt. to open the door instead of always closing it.

Other than the initial kneejerk when the unemployment rate and nonfarm payrolls came out the dollar made no big progress today against most other major currencies. The weak ass GDP from the 1st quarter that's been revised 3 times now at -2.9 the lowest in 5 years.. I think they can only use the bullshit story about the harsh US winter effecting jobs and production for so long.. Hell even most of the FOMC members are down on US manufacturing and a couple headstrong against Yellens decision to not bump the interest rate this last go round. Going to take a lot more than 1 month of good EU rates and nonform payrolls to give the dollar some kick.

Only the ignorant turn this issue into partisan politics, these are systemic problems that both parties at the state and federal level have contributed to it and been unable to solve it and neither can really be blamed.

There simply aren't enough high paying jobs for everyone, technology is chiefly to blame. A nation of service people, whether it's shampooing dogs or performing brain surgery it's what we are. The load will continue to be laid on the rich to support the working poor and the lazy who'd rather take handouts than a menial job. A higher minimum wage does nothing to solve the problem, lower tax rates do nothing to solve the problem, nothing does. So stop pointing fingers at either party.

The government and educators need to stop lying to teenagers and their families about college, they know the vast majority of kids will never get a worthwhile college degree and will end up saddled with debt. We're subsidizing the education of the minority of college students who will become highly paid in their fields on the backs of immature kids who shouldn't be in college.

The government is the recipient of all college debt proceeds now.. You can bet they will be promoting the lifelong debt beyond you and your kids grave. The idea that government is working for you or even remotely has your well being in it's thoughts as a whole is what needs to be completely eliminated from thought.

Why did it get too expensive to operate in SC? You surely can't expect us to compete with China? There will always be a cheaper place to manufacture. No American wants the life of a Chinese factory worker.

What if there was a third world country where people looked and sounded just like us? There were a thousand couples just like your wife and you and they started up websites just like yours but were happy to make $10,000 charging 5 dollars a month for the same product/experience you provide?

I don't know, by the time I lived in S.C. there were empty mills all over the place. Matter of fact, all three houses I owned there were old "mill houses" (built by the companies for their employees)

As for competing with China...S.C. competed with the rest of the world for that BMW plant and won it.

You can theorize all you want. But facts are facts. The state gave BMW a great deal. They decided that building the cars in S.C. to sell in the U.S was cheaper that way than building them in China or some other cheap labor country and having to import them into the U.S.

Bottom line is that "yes", you can make a more attractive environment for companies and get them to build here. I saw it with my own two eyes. And they aren't the only car company that did that.

The Southeastern U.S. is full of Honda, VW, Hyundai, and other company plants building cars...anywhere BUT Detroit because of the unions and the high taxes there.

That's why Detroit is a ghost town.

Those hurt but they aren't putting out the same product as Robbie, just one part of what he provides.

Oh, so the BMW plant is still there. You made it sound as if the BMW plant came, did great, and then moved to China.

They didnt compete with the rest of the world for it. They competed in America for it because BMW wanted a plant closer to where the people who buy their cars are. Shipping cars from overseas and going thru inspections isnt cheap. Also you got to find another straw man, unions make up less than 11 percent of workers in america. They are a non issue.
Overseas they can do things they cant do here. With one of the iphones something was wrong and had to be addressed. They woke the whole plant up in the middle of the night, gave them a cup of tea and biscuit and put them to work for 16 hrs straight. The Apple guy commented this is amazing you cant get this in America.
Technology is the problem not Obama. Instagram was 6 people and worth billions of dollars more than kodak was ever worth and they had hundreds of thousands of workers. Craigslist destroyed the newspaper ad business and that was thousands of jobs replaced by some people working out of a guys house. In ten years there will be self driving cars and kiss all those driving jobs goodbye. What do you do with those people? This is a huge problem no one want to look at.

You are being childish. You are taking the worst of the worst, a city that was fucked long before the recession, and blaming it on the democrats. In fact, maybe we should blame i on the republicans because Detroit was in decline long before the recession hit, and the recession just bitch smacked Detroit even harder.

But I don't think it's fair to blame what's happening in Detroit on the republicans or the democrats. Detroit has been in decline since it reached it's population peak in the 1950s, and you cant' really blame that on either side or even the federal government.

Yeah, Tony...in a sense they did compete with the world.

BMW decided that building in the USA was the right way to go because if they could get tax breaks and no union to deal with it made more sense financially to do it in the USA.

That's my whole point. Thank you for helping me make it.

Our govt. CAN do something to help bring back jobs. The states have already shown them the way. Unfortunately they seem to be in a Washington D.C. bubble and only know what to do based on who is contributing the most to them.

And by the way..."technology" is not the problem. Cars are still being built by human beings all over the world.

It's DUMB decisions like trying to raise the salary at McDonalds that will get people fired and bring in technology. But that's the service industry and should never be paid that much to begin with.

Look at G.E. They have the world's largest jet engine manufacturing plant...in Brazil.

That COULD be right here in the United States. How many more like that? Thousands.
Our federal govt. (not baby-jesus Obama...but the lifetime politicians in Congress and the Senate) are the ones fucking us.

There are things that WORK...like the car companies all over the Southeastern United States building cars and boosting their local economies.
And then there are things that don't...like Detroit.

Even Stevie Wonder could see it. But yet Washington D.C. just keeps on doing the same thing over and over and over...and expecting a different result.

EDIT: Just saw that GE is building a new jet engine plant in Lafayette, Indiana and it will be the 7th in the last few years joining these towns:Batesville, MS; Auburn, AL; Greenville, SC; Dayton, Ohio; Ellisville, MS; and Asheville, NC

Hmmmm....I wonder what those states have in common with each other that brought these jobs BACK to the U.S. despite all the excuses you just made about technology and blah-blah-blah?

I wonder what it could be...can't quite put my finger on it. All in states and towns that gave them tax breaks and no union.
But I wonder why they came back to the U.S.? It's mystifying...at least to Congress in Washington D.C.
To the rest of us it's crystal clear.
