Macbook Pro, Macbook Air or ...
Hey guys,
I'm wondering to get between Macbook Air or Macbook Pro 13" I'll be using it mainly for Visual Studio (will install Win), some video editing and other daily tasks etc.. I know the Pro is more powerful, but is there big difference? Some guys told me that the Pro got heat when using more powerful programs? Also if anyone can recommend me some good 13" ultrabook good looking, thin, light and quality like the Air Also please no Macs vs PCs bullshit .. I'm also PC user and maybe I'll get my first Mac, but for ultrabooks they look good, good quality etc. and most Win machines look shit lol |

Absolutely get the Pro. Air is nothing more than a glorified email checking machine. I've had them since the day they came out. Just got the Pro last month. Don't know how I worked without it.
Macbook Pro for the win. |

I run a Macbook Pro, and I do notice a difference in the speed. The Macbook Air feels very light, however, and is incredibly portable. They're both very well-built laptops, and run Windows quite capably. I run Mac OS X on mine, because I am a LAMP programmer, but it's very good at both.
It'd be hard to find a better quality laptop, and if you get Apple Care, you won't have ANY worries. I highly recommend it. |

I'm considering the 2013 model because I've got good offer for this.. Yeah from what I'm seeing for the Windows ultrabooks/laptops I don't like 99% of them .. they are fugly and/or cheap looking (even the expensive biz laptops) I want to get good looking and quality Win laptop/ultrabook but there's not many damn |

What Pink said. The Air is fantastic (I have one and use it all the time) but the Pro has a faster CPU.
Then again I know someone who has does heavy video editing on multiple networked mac servers. He edits on his air from wherever he is, but his servers do all the rendering for him. He then uses his desktop to spot check his changes and re renders if necessary. Sweet setup.

I used to do that with my Macs, around 2007-2009, I think. I just prefer the Apple build quality, even if I am using it for a Windows machine. Now, the quality has gone down (like anything else), but it's still hard to find a comparable Wintel machine, build-wise.

Pro v Air
Currently I have an 11" Air. I went for the smallest & lightest. Plus it fits in a beautiful leather portfolio my GF bought me. It replaced an older MacBook Pro with the DVD player.
The Air (4GB RAM) bogs down on a couple of huge spreadsheets I have with hyperlinks to web sites. I just looked at the new MacBook Pros when I was at the apple store. A 13" will still fit in the portfolio and I'll have greater processing power. I have 3 programs, MailWasher, Act!, and Approach database that are windows only, so I run Parallels. Usually, I can use my Verizon iPad to surf & check email, but the new Pro I will be able to use my iPhone as a hotspot. I deal with a lot of wineries that are rural and usually don't have customer WiFi. Also Verizon has the best coverage.Great when I can show the winery owner my wine based web sites. |

Quickbooks 99. It's a lot better than QB for Mac. I did a free trial and said no thanks. Since I don't have payroll to constantly upgrade. QB 99 works fine and I've save a ton of money and time using QB 99 the same as the day I installed it. |

Moving to a new Quickbooks
Quote:
QB 99 is so lame you can't clone a company structure to a new company minus the transactions. QB is crap. Unfortunately all the other low end accounting packages are worse. I don't know what upgrades they've made, but I'll be damned if I give them any more money. I'd never trust my financials to a cloud. Too many big names have come and gone. Be a nightmare if one night they folded without warning. |

That's funny...especially when you consider the dozens of Hollywood feature films that have been cut in Final Cut Pro. And a good chunk of the Avid edited movies also on Macs.
But I'm guessing "real editors" are porn guys who use Sony Vegas and PC's? ![]() Sidenote: Premiere just got it's first feature film cut on it a month or two ago.

What I did said don't buy one of their laptops. Something in the way they display color, I don't recall the specifics...I was just told this buy the guy I've been shadowing. Who makes his living editing features and television. On a Mac using Premiere, which leads me too... Maybe the first studio feature, but there are been a ton of features edited on Premiere. |

QuickBooks isn't always crap
Despite QuickBooks limitation, I once came up with a solution using QuickBooks, a million dollars worth of software couldn't solve. Had to do with moving inventory between warehouses, the valuation and when we had to pay the warehouse or producer. To make it worse, they would take chemical A of 1000 gallons and 500 gallons of chemical B and might end up with 1275 gallons +/- of chemical C. Yeah I know the math doesn't figure. That's why the computer programs couldn't do the math. Not allowed to name the chemicals, but lets just say it's that shit they put into turkeys & hams. |

I have an Alien Laptop big as hell and heavy does wonders with video but has a heating issue when running Mp4's Its odd but manageable.
Dell has a LOT of things out that are really good and half the cost of Mac. If you want something better over all for the office and dont mind the expense get a cray, I think they still make a small office size.

I just purchased a new 15" Macbook Pro Retina today (16gb Base model). I use one at work but have to give it back soon as I am leaving.
I would recommend you buy a 16gb model if you can. My 8gb model seems to always using up it's swap space... (though I have never had it slowdown on me).. and you can't upgrade it, so... I think you'll enjoy using it. I love mine. Awesome machine.

Mac
Once you go Mac you never go back
I used to work for one of the largest movie theatre companies in the world. We all had pcs. But the head of the graphic arts department insisted if they wanted him, his crew got Macs. They did those videos you see before the movie. He was using a MacBook Pro. that was a few years ago when you could only get 4-8 GB RAM. |
