:stop Detroit man whose 21-mile walk to work inspired $350,000 in donations moves to temporary home

you call that brotha barefootsies?

The Detroit man whose determination to walk more than 20 miles a day to get to and from work inspired an online campaign that raised more than $350,000 for him abruptly moved on Tuesday after telling police that he did not feel safe with his new found fortune.

According to the Detroit Free Press ? whose profile of 56-year-old James Robertson led to the outpouring of donations and gifts, including a new car ? the factory worker was moved to a temporary home after consulting with local law enforcement officials.

Was this story bullshit? I mean come on, nobody would walk 9 hours daily to some factory job. And the part of that he could not afford a car? How much does a beater cost? Bike at least lol.
Fishy story.

I see people working to and from work every day. Usually they are fast food workers.

People gotta do what people gotta do.

So this guy couldn't get a bicycle? A moped? Really?

If he couldn't afford one of the above how is he going to afford insurance? Oh yea I'll pay for that with uninsured motorist coverage.

WTF are you talking about? Of course many people are walking to their jobs. Did I claim otherwise? Do those you see walk for 9 HOURS daily? More walking than working. More walking than sleeping.

I would respect the will, but that would mean serious mental issues. I mean outside working and walking he would have less than 8 hours left. Not enough for good sleep (you need much of it walking that much + working in a factory), let alone for ANYTHING else.
Instead he could at least take a bicycle if not a $500 beater to drive...

You always have an excuse to hate on people don't ya? This guy has been well documented over the last week or two on a few big sites. He is the type of minority you should want to support because he is working and doing what ever it takes to continue working. Not using it as an excuse to sit on welfare.

here are more details:
Strangers raise $60,000 to buy car for Detroit man who walks 21 miles a day to work - Yahoo News

"The story of a Detroit man who has been walking 21 miles a day to get to and from work for over a decade..."

that's either made up or the guy is completely fucked up... for 10 years he didn't get a clue that by buying some $50 bike he could cut his commute half?

Moron, I am not mad at all. Where did you get the idea? Damn you are almost BM level stupid with your assumptions out of nowhere

I am just curious if this story is true because it does not make ANY sense (I explained why above). Who would do that instead of getting at least a bicycle?

why is everything right vs left for you? just about every post you make brings politics into it...

there is nothing at all left vs right about some idiot who for a decade spent his entire day walking to and from work and didn't have high enough iq to check himself into a mental institution and/or buy a bike....

Moron, actually this guy deserves my respect because he is the kind of guy everybody likes - instead of collecting welfare he goes great lengths to work.
So instead of being a democrat welfare leecher he is republican worker to put it vividly in the light of your ridiculous accusation

The only thing I question is the legitimacy of the story (or his mental health if true, again I explained why), looks like it is too hard for dummies like you to comprehend such as simple thing

Fuck you. I don't hate on anyone. I'm simply skeptical of someone who WALKS 21 miles to work when riding a bicycle would cut the time by 90%. That fact hasn't entered your mind?

Robertson begins his trek at 8 a.m. to catch buses that take him to a Troy, Mich., mall before he walks 7 miles to Schain Mold & Engineering, where he begins his 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift.

His commute home takes even longer. Leaving work after 10 p.m., Robertson walks the 7 miles back to the mall, where he catches the last bus of the day, just before 1 a.m., taking it as far as it goes: the State Fairgrounds on Woodward, just south of 8 Mile. From there, he walks roughly 5 miles back to home through what he describes as a dangerous section of town.

"I have to go through Highland Park, and you never know what you're going to run into," Robertson says. "It's pretty dangerous. Really, it is, from 8 Mile on down. They're not the type of people you want to run into. But I've never had any trouble." (According to Wilson, Robertson got mugged once but doesn't like to talk about it.)

By the time he gets home, at 4 a.m., it's almost time to do it again.

Exactly... Forget the fact that at least bicycle would help a lot. Forget the fact that you have no time to live... You do not even have time to sleep - it would be physical impossible to do it (tiring walk + factory work) for days (especially for older person) with only 3-4 hour sleep...
That is why this story sounds like BS.

Ride Smart is the public bus system for Lansing. Taken from their site ... "All SMART Fixed Route buses are equipped with easy-to-use bike racks that can quickly secures up to two bicycles." He can take the bus AND ride his bike.

So again, why doesn't he get a $50.00 dollar bicycle and instead of walking for hours ride a bike and sleep like normal people do?

My common sense meter is off the chart on this one.

If true he's a pretty determined guy so good for him. As L-Pink said though think after 1 day of walking that shit I'd be saving for a bike or fucking a fat ass co-worker for a free lift to the bus.

I saw the story a week ago and had a few thoughts ...

God bless a guy that works that hard and is that dependable.
How doses a man his age work a factory job then walk that far everyday.
How does anyone regardless of age survive on so little sleep.
Why doesn't he cut his walking time by 90% on a bike?
How has his workplace remained accident free with workers being exhausted on the job?

And yes Tony it's nice someone got him a free car. It doesn't however answer any of the questions about his story and decision making.

EDIT: be real funny if he moved to an apt 1/2 mile from his job now.

What a crock of shit. Not the guy, but the "story". If someone walks 7+ hrs a day to work and to home, its 100% by choice. Anyone that can work can afford a bicycle. Anyone with a bicycle can ride to a bus stop. If he chose to walk to work and home... good for him. a nice, interesting, healthy choice. But it is a choice.... not a sentence imposed upon him by society, which demands remedy. If he wants a car.. great, I'd give a guy money to buy a car just knowing he put in that much exercise because that in itself is quite impressive. But the news is out of control these days with their bullshit.

You know. i didn't think about this. I guess were are talking about the same people who can't be asked to have an id to vote or get a job because that's just too hard and inconvenient. So, you do have a good point.

Average person walks 3 mph and rides a bike 15 miles per hour with a lot less wear and tear on the body. I'l learn real quick.

True but if I had to walk that much think I'd ride in the lawn until I learned how not to fall off the bitch.

The saddest part of this is that it paints a picture of someone who has some sort of mental issues that needs attention.

It's kind of obvious, when the same guys that constantly cry about welfare or act as if minorities aren't deserving to be Americans, then start tearing in to this guy as if he's lying.. Well the motive is pretty fucking clear as day.

You think for a min if it was some old white good ole boy whom worked his farm with a mule for 10 years, then was given $350k to buy a tractor.. You think they wouldn't be praising the guy for being a "true" or "quality" American.

Meanwhile this guy walked to work for 10 years and never missed a day, lives in Detroit is a minority, so obviously he must be a mental case or trying to pull one over on them.

they should've offered him a stay in the local psych ward. Instead of raising money for someone who is clearly fucked in the head.

I share many of your views Crockett but I have to side with L-Pink on this one.

My first reaction to the story was that it was made up. It really doesn't add up if you think about it.
