I had breakfast with a republican three weeks ago. We talked about guns mostly, to be honest; gun control, gun safety, what most people don't know about guns or weapon handling, his commentary about guns as pertaining to certain news stories of late, and how people can be very stupid about guns. That sort of thing.

Then again he was one of the top gunsmiths in the country some decades ago, and still owns over 80 weapons himself, several of which are bonified antiques, all of which are kept in mint condition. He considers himself not so much pro-gun as anti-stupid. Meaning he more than anyone knows that some gun control laws and regulations are smart, while others as well as some being proposed, are moronic and won't work.

My conversation with this fellow was quite simply fascinating. The meal itself was fantastic but I barely remember it as I hung on every word from this 70+ yr old retired business owner/sportsman/hunting, fishing & gun expert. I found myself wishing I'd vid-cap'd it.

The name Trump, however, did not come up once. Neither did Carson's. Frankly at this point I can't say which way the guy might be leaning. Could be he's a Jeb Busher, but he's also a great lover of women (two self-described wonderful former marriages spanning over 35 years, 4 daughters, 7 or 8 grand-daughters) so Fiorina would not be out of the question, especially since she's a long-time 2nd amendment supporter and gun owner herself.

Hey, like it or not it's going to be one of the big issues in this election largely due to the recent mass shootings. Now, this might get some of you wondering what Trump's stance on guns is, as well as others. It certainly got me curious.

No, I think he's pulling in the "moral majority" religious votes that Santorum got in 2012.

And I think that will be his downfall in the end. And if he somehow pulls Trump into that same "abortion" trap...it will take out the Republican candidate in the general election as well.

If I were Trump and a reporter started up on me about abortion...I'd look them straight in the eye and say: "What the fuck does abortion have to do with the trouble this country is in. I'd say the RR, is very skeptical of Trump and likely doesn't approve of his constant bashing of people, so they are going for the next best guy. Outside of the Relgious pandering Carson seems intelligent and well spoken.. So he will be the Relgious Right's boy..

i was studying the democratic candidates yesterday, all of the viable ones are thoroughly entrenched (not just career, but entrenched) politicians with 25-35 years in politics.

I just think he's putting out there in his own quiet demeanor way that he is THE guy for the religious right.

And if you think about it, politically he IS the perfect guy for the religious right.

A super intelligent doctor who is thoughtful and softspoken and doesn't give off the "crazy" aura of a Palin or a Santorum.

I personally wouldn't want anyone in office talking about their "beliefs" and can't stand it when I hear politicians who ARE in office babbling that children's superstitious crap.

I don't know how they can do it with a straight face. And I can just imagine them having a beer afterwards and laughing about it.

I have said this a few times and still believe it. There is a good amount of the republican party that are conservative Christian evangelicals. they often support candidates that they feel agree with them when it comes to faith and beliefs. Trump has likely gotten support from some of them because they likely agree with his position on immigration or the economy, but they are not sold on him sharing their faith. Carson is the kind of guy who shares their faith so in a place like Iowa where there is a good concentration of evangelicals it is no surprise that they have picked him as the person they support.

It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with religion.

They had a black man leading in the polls in 2012. His name was Herman Cain. And the very week that he took the lead in the polls...that's when MSNBC and CNN began working him over like a punching bag.

They started reporting over and over that he was a womanizer and then Gloria Allred showed up "representing" women who accused him of sexual shenanigans at work.

He immediately left the campaign after the "left" pretty much exposed his entire private life and ruined his marriage.
Of course, they did not do any of that until he began leading in the polls. And of course all those women accusing him? After he left the campaign that all just magically went away.
