If you could find out the date and time of your death in the future, would you want to know?

See thread title. I'm torn between a yes and no answer but lean more towards no.

I'm a parent, if I could get the certainty I would be around when my kids are old enough to start a life of their own that would be enough...

And if the answer was no, what would you do differently?

We all know that we are going to die someday. We all know that it could be tonight, tomorrow, or in 30 years. Very few of us alter our lives for the better with that in mind.

If this is a concern of yours, do something to change your life now for the better. Otherwise, what does it matter?

No.

8 char.

Well maybe if it was 80+ years old than yes, otherwise my life would be ruined thinking I will die in 5, 10 years or so.

But since you could not say "tell me only if I die at the old age" the answer is 100% no.

I think I have a nice work / family life balance.
I earn enough money so my family is having a nice comfortable life (nothing crazy).
I don't think I would do anything different.
Only thing maybe, anticipate a couple of daddy talks.

Before I had my son, I would have said no.

Now, with him, especially only 4 years old, I would definitely say yes, if only so that if I could make sure that everything was set up for him and my wife, while also being able to balance everything out to get as much quality time as possible. Obviously I already try to spend as much quality time with my family as I can, but I could probably balance things even better if I had this information.

And just the year would be fine.

Yes, 100%. Time management really. If I am going to live another 60 years, I have time to get another degree or three. If I've got 2 years left, I need to spend time with loved ones and do less time-consuming bucket list things. How people plan financially for old age is very dependent on averages and guesses and it would be great to know how many years of dough I'd need.

Do everything sooner rather than later.

Knowing impending date of death is no use without knowing health and fitness leading up to it. A person could find out they will die in 25 years time, spend the next 10 years doing mundane shit expecting to have another 15 years to do things they enjoy, then get hit by a bus and spend 15 years in a nursing home.

Funny you should ask since today a GFY user made repeated threats to kill me. Unfortunately, in all their wisdom, the mods decided to remove the thread before I could get the exact details of exactly when this tragedy will occur.

I mean, I think I'm going to need more half and half for my coffee tomorrow, but then again perhaps not.

Like AmeliaG said, it's about time management. "Live every day like it was your last" is a nice adage but it's difficult to put into practice. Real life gets in the way.

Lets say you would need to work 5 years without spending any time with family in order to set it up.
Or 10 years with balancing 50/50 time for work and family.

And you find out that you have only 5 years left to live. That would mean you would need to work non stop (almost no family time) in order to set them up. Would you do so?

Alternatively (if you did not knew that) you would continue working the 50/50 route and you'd die before setting it up, but you would have quality 5 years with your family instead. And it is not that they would be broke (you would still leave a decent capital to them).

Just brainstorming

Harmon you inbred little turd. Didn't your mother never tell you not to mess with the space time continuum?
If you knew the date and time of your impending death then you could make changes to stop the inevitable from happening. If you do that you could cause a chain reaction that would destroy the entire universe.

I have similar mixed feelings. I think I would like to know though so I can plan accordingly. If I find out I'm going to live to be 95 I might want to work/save differently so I have retirement enough to last me that long. At the same time if I find out I'm going to die in a year I would spend as much possible time with friends and family and doing things I wanted to do.

It's a nice idea, but impossible. If I knew today was my last day I would want to have a few good drinks, fuck, do something fun and say goodbye to my friends and family. If I lived everyday as it it were my last I would never work and nothing would ever get done.

I think it is better to say "appreciate every day as if it is your last."

When I say "set up", I don't mean that my family would be "set for life" financially. I have things already set in such a way that they would have what they need.... And I don't want to hobble my son with large amounts of unearned wealth. I am more referring to giving him the life lessons and wisdom which I think will be truly valuable and enriching to him.

Yes, but only if there was some way to make me forget as I get closer to that date (and some way to stop me writing it down, or telling someone else).

That way I can plan for the future, but not live my final years/months dreading what is to come.

I don't want to know. I want it to be a total surprise. Even if I was to get cancer I wouldn't want to know until it was to late. I've seen ppl close to me go through that and end up losing anyway...just drug my ass so I feel comfortable and let me go. My only death fear is drowning. From experience it sucks. Burning would suck too I guess.

I think impossible to live knowing own date of death...You'll always think about it, you can go crazy and you'll finish your fucking life not in a coffin, but in a nuthouse..So my answer of course NO!

I would like to know that. So I can sell my domains in good time before death and give the money to my daughters.
I'm not afraid of death. I already almost been there. It felt quite peaceful.

I hope to live at least 20 more years. That would be awesome. Its fun to live.

After 10 years in separate bedrooms I saw my wife naked.

No... kidding.

I had a heart failure when I was young. I got surgery for it.

could not have said it better myself.

I'm not sure if the thread starter is aware of it but this thread's inquiry strikes at one of the most classical questions posed in theology and philosophy. Put another way: Would you want the mind of God? Should you?

As much as I'd like to say YES, knowing what I know about humanity and the human condition, the better answer would be: Death is actually a gift, if you think about it hard enough.
