We only have hotels, B&B's and guest houses around here so what is a motel?

Is it a hotel but Americans call it a hotel? Do they not call hotels hotels.

If I wanted to book a hotel in Orlando should I search for motels?

Does Google geographically correct the search to - Did you mean Hotel?

I think generally speaking Motel is 2 stories or less...a contraction of the old Motor Inns. Hotel is the most common use these days and covers everything

Motel is a type of a hotel - near roads, short stay, as someone said 1-2 stories. There is no actual strict definition though.

The way I was told when I was a kid and never assumed or was told otherwise is that: motel you have an outside entrance and hotel is inside access though a lobby.

As a Floridian that makes sense

Motel = Motor Hotel, i.e. You drive up to your room. Usually cheaper, easier to get hookers, cadavers and other stuff in and out of your room while avoiding front desk scrutiny and prying eyes.

If I am not mistaken it is a marketing term coined in the glory days of route 66 and intended to offer a convenient place to sleep for motorists who just wanted to grab a few z's before hitting the road again.

We have premiere inns or travel lodge.

Hotels - food, bars, room, bed & all the other trimmings

B&B - bed & breakfast...

Motel or inn, a bed for the night, some now do break fast, but standard, no bars or restaurants.
