Seems like an odd way of looking at it, if Russia had responded by nuking Ankara this would have given NATO the excuse they wanted to escalate to WW3. Russia were civilized in their response, not resorting to primitive tit for tat retaliation.

Good point, the timing makes this appear as revenge, even though Turkey were sending weapons to ISIS, Russia had probably been turning a blind eye until their plane was shot down. Plus they have blatantly said that Russia is a "threat". But look at this objectively: Who deployed their army to the border? The same amount of soldiers were in service 2 years ago too. So in case of war all those guys will get back on duty (all men of 18..27 year old have to serve in army) - go do your math now ;)
