A GFY user is trying to scam one of my employees into paying for a domain name he's squatting on
So this is interesting:
A certain GFY member was waiting for one of our domains to expire, and grabbed it for $10 or so. Now he's emailing one of my employees offering to sell it to her for $2500.00. Of course, he is within his right to do so. But also of course, he's a fucking scumbag. I have come across domain names that we wanted, but were taking by someone else, and that were close to expiring. Did I pull a shitty stunt, buy it up from under them and try to sell it to them later? No, and I never would. 2 others on GFY went out of their way to tell us about domains that were on-brand or close enough to our brand to let us buy them. GFY has lots of very cool people - even people we spar with - are cool! But not this GFY user I don't think. He has been emailing her since last week and playing this game. Not cool at all. What would you do? If you found out that a domain name had become available or was about to become available that you know belonged or should belong to someone else in the industry, even a competitor, would you let them have it?

Your domain registrar doesn't give you a 30 day grace period to renew it after it expires?
Try a better company- See my sig!!

Hey Acpimpe: Even though I *really* disagree with you when it comes to politics, I would never keep "Acepimp.com" or a similar name like that from you or anyone else. We're all in business together and hanging out at trade shows is fun. (I've even shook hands with Baddog! Ack!). Withholding someone's domain name is like stealing, or at least, kicking someone when they are down. This GFY'er doesn't seem to post on GFY that often, but he should be finding this thread fairly soon. I wonder what he will do? He knows my girl's email address so maybe he will email her and do the right thing. We'll see.

This is a side effect of owning a lot of domains that you may not care about. I've got close to 2000 domains. Have lost important ones a few times and paid for it in return. Learned my lesson and created a system so it doesn't happen again.
Part of business. Cost of business. Don't get too upset about it. If you want the domain, buy it and move on.

From what I have experienced, at most registrars it takes between 60 and 90 days past expiration before it can be picked up. Grace period, redemption period, auction period and then the registrar makes it available for registration.
During that time any sites on the domain would not be working because the domain would be inactive. So, no, I do not feel bad about or feel that anyone is doing anything wrong if they picked it up and then offered it back. And you know that I don't like scumbags in the industry but this does not sound like one. They gave plenty of time for it to be re-registered. You also don't know that when they picked it up that they knew who had it before. You are guessing at that part I think. I have picked up domains on the drop many times before. I never worried about why they were being dropped. If that domain was that important, the owner had plenty of time to re-register it. If there was a site on it then that site must not have been very important. If there was no site then the owner was cyber-squatting it to begin with. No harm, no foul in this one. Just my ![]() .

Namecheap auctions/sells your domains off much earlier than that, I learned that the hard way the sons of bitches took a five letter domain of mine. I find it odd that you support cybersquatting in this manner. Seems out of your character. |

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've run across domains that were dropped that were the non-hyphenated brands of people's sites in this business who were using the hyphenated versions and registered them, or the domains were part of a larger aquisition, and just gave them to the person/company. Off top of my head there was a domain that matched one of the properties of PinupDollars and another one for a stockings TGP. Not everything has to be about money.
Having said that, most registrars start firing off emails weeks in advance of an expiring domain, long before it's actually available to be registered by someone else. To let a domain expire that you actually want is pretty careless, quite honestly, regardless of the actions of the user about whom you are speaking.

I'm not saying someone deserves it. That's your words, not mine. I am saying that it is careless. Something as simple as a filter to put all mails that are important to you, like domain reminders, into a non-spam folder, isn't exactly cutting edge technology.

I don't know that it is squatting. You don't know if the person who bought it had a different intention when he bought it. You do not know the details beyond what Mark has said. I do know that it is business and if you don't mind your store then you have no right to gripe about the rats that get in and eat the wheat. ya know? You didn't read the last sentence of their policy that you quoted if the domain is auctioned off your shit out of luck and can't redeem it even though it's within the Redemption period YOU FUCKING MORON! Normally, generic TLDs get released approximately in 70-80 days (in rare cases, up to 120 days) after the expiration date if not returned from redemption and if not auctioned off. Namecheap taking domains to be auctioned earlier than the dates you posted has been widely documented here and I'm not rehashing everyone's experience here or my thread about my experience. You thinking everyone who loses domains is stupid abd deserves what they get, you're a fucking moron for saying that asshole. I still love you but you're being a fucking moron on this particular issue. |

I did not say that someone losing a domain was stupid. I stated the facts as I know them and my opinion that someone doing what Mark described is NOT in my opinion, necessarily an asshole. In the search you posted, one item seemed to be about what we are talking about (expired domains) and the link it went to is down, so I can not see what you are talking about. It does not take much to keep a domain list organized in a spreadsheet or even a text file. I have at times had over 500 domains, right now I have about 100 or so, spread between 4 registrars. I have never lost a domain because of an expiration. I check about once a month and renew anything coming up in the next 30 days. Right now I am not doing that because at the end of last year I had extra money so I renewed all my domain through May or June and I don't have to worry about it. I would never depend on the registrar telling me the domain was going to expire. It is MY job to run my business properly. nuff said. Again, just my ![]() .

The auction period starts approximately 60 days after expiration. That is 2 months that the owner can get it back uncontested. They can also participate in the auction process and the drop process to get it back. If something is important it should be minded properly. Again, just my ![]()

Hi sarettah, I mostly agree - if someone lets a domain go for months without using it, and someone else needs it, that's ok, even if it was one of mine. But in this case, the guy is just squatting on it. He told Jen that is using it but it has a for sale sign on it, and, if his intentions were good he wouldn't be trying to sell it to her at a huge markup. And besides, i'm the owner of the domain. I'm all over GFY and he could have easily found me but instead, emails one of my support staff. As GFY's biggest douchebag, I'm calling douchebag on this one. He's trying to sell it to my employee instead of to me, the original domain owner. He knows who I am, and he knows the domain - its only been one of mine for 18 years or something like that. Maybe not technically a scam, but I feel like its a scam. I'm waiting for him to post in this thread or contact me directly. So for nothing yet. Come on T ....... man up. No, but I will PM you.

I have in the past but I don't like auto anything for the most part. I am somewhat of a control freak when it comes to this kind of stuff and auto renew makes me feel not as in control.

I'm not explaining everything to you. I gave you links to how they loophole domains to auction them off before the 60 days, which includes them taking the domain out of your name at 27 days if they think they can auction it / sell it. Yes , this is what they do. Then they charge you anywhere from $50 to hundreds of dollars to get the domain back if they think they can make money from it. Please stop commenting on the issue if you're not going to look at the link I posted. |

I looked at the search you posted. There was one result about what we are talking about, there are now 2. The one going to webhostingtalk is not working. The one going to digitalpoint is working and it is a conversation from 2008 that Namecheap responded ro appropriately, right in the thread. The rest of the results are NOT about stealing domains that expire. I am not paging through the results. If you have a pertinent link, instead of a google search I might look at it. I suggest you look at the results in the search link you posted instead of demanding that I do your work for you. Quote:

(Forgot to add that that domain was hosting some common files for multiple domains. Not 100% crucial and defaulting to its IP address was automatic, but it was still useful and in use. And yet, here you are! I'm just whining. Nothing for you here. Quote:

Meh! I've waited long enough.
Dear, TheDynasty. On March 15th you contacted one of my employees offering to sell her one of my domains that I had let expire. During that time you offered her a "deal", then set a new price at $2500 on March 16th, then asked her to "make an offer", etc. This is not cool, TheDynasty. The Domain that you bought, is LiveCamNetwork.net. The name LiveCamNetwork has been associated with me from as early as 1999. It's my brand, it's my soul, it's my big throbbing cock. It is completely my fault that I let the domain expire, and I am asking you now nicely to please give it back to me. While this domain may now be your "legal" property, it still isn't yours as far as I am concerned. You can have all the laughing and bragging rights you want after this - my pleasure. No matter who I might disagree with on GFY about anything, one thing I would never do is squat on someone's domain and attempt to hold it for ransom or sell it to one of their employees (WTF?). A domain name, even though its small, is the center of anyone's business idea. It's what they base their business on, brand, even graphics and web design. You are in the adult business, I am in the adult business. I do business with a few other companies and individuals here, and so do you. I attend a trade show here and there as I'm sure you do too. Wouldn't it be nice to run into each other, shoot the shit and trade cards over a beer one day? If you're business is domains, shit I could even send business your way, but not if you're going to fuck me over. Please reply here and let me know what you decide. Since you haven't shown up in this thread yet I'll assume you missed it. However, my employee did confirm you are on GFY, and since I now have your email address, I'll send you a link to make sure you don't miss it. Thanks and have a nice day. 2MuchMark.
