The illegal alien population in the United States could be twice as large as the most commonly-used estimate, according to a research study published Friday in the scientific journal Plos One.

The paper, led by Mohammad M. Fazel-Zarandi, a researcher at Yale and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, estimates there are 22.1 million illegal aliens in the United States.

Fazel-Zarandi's study compared inflows and outflows of immigrants as well as demographic data. According to the report, the number of illegal aliens could be as low as 16.5 million, or as high as 29.1 million.

“We combined these data using a demographic model that follows a very simple logic,” Edward Kaplan, a co-author of the report, told Yale Insights. “The population today is equal to the initial population plus everyone who came in minus everyone who went out. It’s that simple.”

Most previous estimates, based on the U.S. Census Bureau's annual American Community Survey (ACS), place the illegal alien population at around 11 million people.

The ACS is generated annually through interviews with about 3.5 million people.

"You find it’s based on one very specific survey and possibly an approach that has some difficulties. So we went in and just took a very different approach," Jonathan Feinstein, another co-author, told Yale Insights.

Still, the new study found similarities in growth patterns of the illegal alien population to the ACS reports of the past two decades.

Most immigration researchers have reported a plateau in growth of that population since 2007, spurred mainly by the decrease in Mexican illegal immigration to the United States.

The reduction in illegal crossings by Mexican citizens coincided with an increase in illegal immigration from Central America and Asia. But the overall illegal alien population has leveled off, and possibly slightly decreased.

The Pew Research Center, which provides regular updates on immigration statistics -- based in part on ACS numbers -- estimated last year that the illegal alien population dropped to 11.3 million from a high of 12.2 million.

The Yale study, which goes as far back as 1990, found the same upward and downward trajectory as the ACS studies, with the illegal alien population ballooning through the 1990s and plateauing after 2007.

"“The trajectory is the same. We see the same patterns happening, but they’re just understating the actual number of people who have made it here,” said Fazel‐Zarandi.

The researchers emphasized the new number does not imply a growth in illegal immigration but a longstanding miscount of existing illegal aliens.

"We wouldn’t want people to walk away from this research thinking that suddenly there’s a large influx happening now,” said Feinstein. “It’s really something that happened in the past and maybe was not properly counted or documented.”

The researchers also noted if the illegal alien population is twice as high as previous estimates, that means the incidence of criminality among illegal aliens is half as high as previously reported.

"You have the same number of crimes but now spread over twice as many people as was believed before, which right away means that the crime rate among illegal aliens is essentially half whatever was previously believed," said Kaplan.

I would prefer we focus on the gang illegals, solve that, and reassess our immigration sitch. you get a lot of migrant workers in your area doing the dirty work for crabbers and fisherman, as i understand it, their businesses rely 100% on that labor and would not be around otherwise. a lot of businesses like that here in Cali too. picking artichokes in the sun.

Democrats do generally agree, however, that people seeking asylum from dangerous or untenable situations should be given refuge in the united states, and that people here illegally should be considered for citizenship. The U.S. controls 93 trillion dollars of the world's 280 trillion - roughly 1/3 of the world's wealth, which supports less than 5% of the world's population.

Given that - why should we not seriously consider giving legal asylum to people fleeing war and outright poverty? Imagine, for a moment, that you were born in Nicaragua, a country now devastated in large part BECAUSE of American intervention. You can't feed your family, and you live in constant fear of criminal gangs. Wouldn't you cross any border necessary to make sure the people you care about could survive?

Maybe you're worried about the impact on American jobs. When immigrants come here illegally, employers pay them under the table - often less than what's required by law. This has the potential to impact U.S. jobs. The correct way to combat this is allow for them to become legal, requiring employers to pay competitive rates to protect competition with U.S. workers.

Additionally, crime is highly correlated with poverty. It's generally something people turn to when they have few options left. Allowing immigrants to earn a living wage in the U.S. will cut down on crime by giving criminals good legal alternatives.

I disagree with you.

Of course I want everyone here illegally to be arrested and be departed. Anyone willing to come here illegally and break our laws while doing so is not the kind of person we should even consider to become a US Citizen.

The part I disagree with you about is giving legal asylum to people fleeing war and poverty. That's just impossible. Based on that criteria, everyone from Nicaragua has the legal right to legal asylum in the United States. We cannot allow tens of millions of people from Nicaragua to come to the United States.

Nicaragua has a total population of a little over 6 million. We could probably accept the bottom 30% who are in the very worst situations. I don't think the U.S. should automatically accept every applicant for asylum, but I think they should all be considered. There's a lot more we could do.

We do have 30% of the worlds wealth and 4.28% of it's population, so more than any other country in the world we're in a position to help people who don't have enough to survive. At a certain point though, to access that wealth, it would have to come out of the hands of private owners.
