LOL @ fine arts degree. That qualifies her for what?

One of our family members went for a big degree and is now over one hundred thousand dollars in debt. She works as a child psychologist at a local school in Southern California making $70k a year. She's lucky her husband is making bank or she would be homeless. It's interesting because this person is very smart and she can see the difference between what her degree is costing her vs what she will be making.

My kid just left for college. I had to explain how much the degree costs. The amount of money a freaking AA degree costs is staggering.

My kid got his AA before he graduated high school. Only honors students were invited to test into the program and he was one of only 19 kids to be chosen. Then he got a free ride on a scholarship to his BS in Computer Science, which he will get in May. Roughly a month after he turns 20.

School doesn't have to cost near as much if you work smarter and harder than the rest of the idiots.

I joke with a friend who studies philosophy, that they are opening a philosophy factory where he can go look for a job...

Where is the problem? 100k school loan making 70k a year doesn't sound like a fail here. Do you think she would give up her 70k a yr job to get rid of her degree and 100k loan?

I hope your kids remember how much you've contributed and helped when you're old. We have recent university grads who were engineers jobs wasting their talents on menial jobs. Many just take jobs they are way overqualified in order to survive.

I think the point is that we should have an education system in this country where a person could get a degree that would lead to a good job and not have to come out of it with massive debt that will drag them down for years.

It's wrong to assume college degrees are only supposed to be for what you think is a good job.

The arts are a part of our culture, where do you think people learn the arts? There's more to the world than engineering and biology. Is history not important? Are child psychologists not important because they don't make enough for a Richard?

so let's get this straight.

richard, who has job as a remote CSR for a porn email company and copies russian disinformation blogs, points his finger at and scornfully derides a person because she chose to get a loan so she could learn how to help children.

not shocked.

Just for the record, you can be an artist(and get paid) without the "fine arts" degree. It's called raw talent and work ethic. If you really have what it takes to sell a piece of art, no one will look at your degree before they purchase it.

And don't believe the term "starving artist". Look within your 5 ft radius. Unless you're sitting on a log in the wilderness, you'll see art which was created by paid artists.... whether it's a calendar on your wall, the tshirt design you're wearing or the label on the jar of mayonnaise you just pulled out of the fridge. I've been living as an artist for 20 years and by this time I've built up many streams of income which pay me perpetually.

plenty of art that requires serious training/education- ballet, music. many with raw talent need the structure of education to bring out their talents. there are very few self-taught piano players. also, disciplines like history and such. we need history teachers. that requires education.

If by career choices you mean a "job", then yes she might have trouble finding work. But the artistic field is one where you can create your own job.

Agreed completely. But if she is on foodstamps, clearly it isn't going too well.

My belief on paying for an education in the arts is this (and I say this as someone who derives a big chunk of my income from writing):

If you go to college to study something in the arts, you have to go into it assuming you will not get a job in that field unless you create one for yourself. If you find yourself with student debt and no job in that field, you have nobody to blame but yourself. It's a very hard field to break into.

Now, that said, I think everyone would benefit from a college education and this country would be a better place if everyone had a college education. Personally, I think we need to work to lower the cost of education so if a person wants to go to college to study the arts, they can and they can do it without racking up a bunch of debt. It makes it easier to chase your dream and create your own job if you don't leave college up to your eyes in debt.
