Astronomers detect mysterious radio signal

CTVNews.ca Staff
Published Thursday, January 10, 2019 9:53AM EST

A mysterious radio signal emanating from a galaxy far, far away has been detected by a telescope in British Columbia. The discovery is significant because it’s only the second time ever a repeating signal has been observed by scientists.

In a paper published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, researchers from several Canadian universities reported how they detected 13 new fast radio bursts (FRBs) using the new Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope located in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

Would be really weird, and a little sad, if we finally make contact with aliens and they are 1 and 1/2 billion light years away.

Perhaps they might know how to make use of wormholes to travel great distances. Or have some sort of propulsion system we can't conceive. Maybe teleportation.

Who knows. Great distances are only relative to the limitations of technology.

Yeah, we receive a hello from 1.5 billion years away, we reply, another 1.5 billion years for our message to reach them - however they've already been wiped out by something in that time.

A lot happens in 3 billion years.

As much as I would love to find out we are not alone in the world.... It's just a repeating sound, not much else.

He's the problem a radio wave is faster than a sound wave in a vacuum. But it would still take 1 year for a radio wave to travel 1 light year. As the wave they detected emanated from approximately 1.5 billion light years away it would be a fucking long time before they got a reply !!!!

A year ago when the MOD declassified 3 ufo videos for the first time. I think they made it pretty clear:

I don't believe one way or the other. I'm a UFO agnostic. My jury is still out pending irrefutable evidence. Not to say there hasn't been a crapload of intriguing photos, videos and eyewitness accounts over the years...but I'm still not 100% convinced.

Long ago I often thought the gov't was somehow tasking Hollywood to condition and de-sensitize the general public about the existence of extraterrestrial life through movies (i.e. "Close Encounters", E.T., etc.)...so that when the day came to officially announce their existence the world wouldn't panic and be thrown into total chaos. I think the gov't still fears this scenario if the truth be told.

Or its all a bunch of hooey. Like I said, I'm not entirely convinced either way. I've known Lazar's story from way back when it originally came out, and watched the Larry King interview...and he seems convincing and legit. But I still question why wait three decades to re-surface? I don't know if I buy his explanation on this. And he seemed a little vague with some of his answers - especially with the physical description of the alien he claims to have seen firsthand.

My only question at this point is whether I'll live long enough to see/hear the real truth... one way or another.

There are now so many evidences. Testimonies by people like Gordon Cooper, Edgar Mitchell, an FAA director, a pilot who flow Obama, etc, etc. Hundreds of people. Hundreds of documents. Radar logs, Samples, and so on. If all this was about a trial for murder, one would have been fried on the electric chair long ago. Its just that many people want an alien to knock at their door to believe it.

Watch this interview from last month, may help you see what is going on. Looks like yes you should live long enough to live in a world where this is accepted globally.

Canadian beer, bacon and maple syrup.

Maybe they want our fresh water. Maybe Earth is like a truckstop bathroom...they stop for a bit, take a piss...mutilate a few cows for shits 'n giggles...do some donuts to create crop circles, and zip by a few drunk rednecks for some blurry photos...then resume their trip.

It is spot on and for someone who normally posts, I don't understand fully before most of his posts, this one is well received.

Likely the signal is being repeated by some large star pulsating out a huge magnetic force.

The actual terms i forget or never knew. Just right? That is likely what is up, a pulsating magnetic field is throwing out the repeating signal.

What sucks is there is so much interference everywhere in the observable data field that it will be super hard to really find any other sentient being. To add to that point, it is totally within chance that said beings could have just ceased to exist by the time we receive the signal or message back.

Anyway.

Fuck you

Imagine if billions of signals started hitting earth from another planet, it would cripple our communications and no doubt cause enough disruption to start killing things on the planet.

I'm sure as a species the first thing we would do is try and knock the signal source out.. before we perished.

Earth emits such signals daily.. if there is any thing local that's intelligent, live in fear of the time they realise we're here.

*Ahem*... Now:

The sad fact is that we are too far away for any aliens to come and visit. To get from there to hear requires ships that can fly hundreds of times faster than the speed of light. Not only does it required an obscene amount of energy if it were possible, it is just plain impossible to go faster than the speed of light. Managing wormholes and other exotic ideas also costs a shitload of energy. It's impossible, its impractical, its expensive. There are no aliens here.

Is alien life possible in our own solar system? Hell Yes. I'm betting the farm that we discover genuine alien life below the surface of Europa, or maybe in an under water cavern of Mars if it exists. Europa is still the best bet for me.

Is today's signal proof of alien life? Who knows, but it sure is interesting. My fingers are cross that the signal is not natural, but instead manufactured and intentional.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Science Fiction. I enjoy Star Wars and 2001 and X-files and Aliens and Interstellar and CONTACT more than anyone. I love love science, and science says the Aliens are Out There, not in here.

Some Harvard scientists have speculated that these things (which have been discovered a number of times now and appear may be quite common) are the result of interstellar alien probes being pushed by monumental lasers directed at their sails.

One of the scientists who discovered this recent event thinks this is unlikely, because they seem to come from different galaxies, and so it would be highly improbable that all these different alien civilizations had the same method of transport.

I don't know about that, but I do understand the implication of us discovering a number of alien civilizations all of whom are billions of years away in vastly remote galaxies.

It would mean the chances of there being any other civilization in our galaxy is close to zero, or even in any of the other galaxies in our 'local' universe.

And given that this technology, although incredibly advanced, would probably be achievable with us within a few thousand years given the exponential progress of technology, it would also have the implication that we will almost certainly wipe ourselves out before then. In other words, intelligent civilizations like ours are very common, but we wipe ourselves out nearly every time before we reach the point of developing technology like this.

And if you believe the Singularity hypothesis, which holds that the exponential growth of technology, when applied to A.I., will lead to a point when technological advances go off the scale and a 1,000 years progress is made in one hour (when A.I. becomes so advanced it can immediately design even more advanced A.I. than itself), which many predict to happen this century the implication is we wont survive it.

Given that galaxies, star systems, solar systems or planetary systems and everything else that has happened to our own systems has happened everywhere else then it's extremely likely that life is also a repeating phenomenon under the right conditions.

We already know extremophiles exist on our own planet, there's no reason to think that there aren't simple life forms in our own solar system.

On a universal scale, we'd be pretty have to be pretty inward looking and egotistical to believe there's not other life in the universe and given that it's likely there is then some of that life will likely exhibit or possess what we call intelligence.

However what Mark says is correct, the stupendous distances involved mean that us travelling to even the nearest star systems would take longer than generations can live and the reverse is also true. No alien civilisation will be any more able to beat the known laws of physics than we can.

Nature on earth has it's own way of sorting stuff out, perhaps nature on a universal scale keeps intelligent life far enough apart from other intelligent life to prevent catastrophic consequences of the meeting of various life forms. Just as likely, however, is that there may be regions of the universe that have multiple intelligent life forms living close together that engage in interplanetary trade or communication at least.

Whatever those signals are, we will not survive long enough to exchange a message because in 3 billion years our sun will have started to die and expand.

So why have they traveled vast interstellar distances just to spook out the occasional fighter pilot? Are they 'testing our defences?' That would probably be like a human testing out the defence of an ant. Any civilization that could make such a trip would almost certainly be able to wipe humanity out in an instant. For that matter, they wouldn't even need probes to 'take a look' that we would notice. They could send microscopic nano probes or probes identical to insects or have a telescope in near space to observe everything they wanted to.

exactly...

plus the whole UFO story is bullshit..."lets travel billions of years with our advanced space craft only to group crash like some fucking amateurs on earth only in the USA and get secretly probed by inferior beings"...

we sent a rover to mars and we are primitive as fuck compared to someone who can travel BILLIONS OF LIGHT YEARS...mars is 12.5 light minutes away...they will send a house fly sized drone...if they bother sending one at all...

*Ahem*...

Yes testimonies are evidence. Our justice put people in jail based on this all the time. But anyway we have much more than testimonies. We have Air to Air radar, Ground to Air Radar. Metals with isotopes showing that they were not from here, documents. etc etc.

To far to get here???

This is with the physic we know only! We were using horses to travel just about 100 years ago. We know nothing yet! Just a year or two ago quantum physics experiments showed that two atoms entangled are interacting in real time no matter how far they are from each other. We have no idea how this is possible but still we now know it is real.

Poor humans always think they know everything, 1000 years ago they knew everything, 500 years ago they knew everything, 100 years ago, today, tomorrow. but still we no nothing yet. When those two brothers were working on the first plane, the newspapers were saying it would never work. We know just a bit about mass/space/time etc. we haven't been able to play with it just yet.

Then what are those highly trained and respectable fighter pilots seeing? Its obviously something they come in contact with.

" Fighter pilot chases UFO, urges world leaders to take the threat of aliens seriously "

An American pilot who claims to have chased an alien aircraft has warned world leaders to take UFO sightings seriously.
Retired US Navy pilot commander David Fravor spoke out in support of ex US government intelligence officer Luis Elizondo, who last week revealed he ran a real life "X Files" UFO research department at the Pentagon named the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program (AATIP) funded by £16 million ($22m) “black ops money” from Congress.

Commander Fravor, 53, was flying one of two fighter jets on a routine training mission about 100 miles into the Pacific ocean off San Diego when they were diverted to check out an aircraft spotted on radar from their navy cruiser the USS Princeton.

The operations operator said they had been tracking up to a dozen mystery aircraft over two weeks but hadn't had manned planes deployed when they showed up.
The object first appeared at 80,000 ft, then hurtled towards the sea, stopping at 20,000 feet and hovering before dropping out of radar.
When Commander Fravor arrived he saw a white aircraft hovering 50 feet above above a disturbance in the ocean.

He said: “It was just moving randomly around - this 40 foot long white tic tac looking thing, with no wings.
“It was a clear day with a blue background and it was perfectly white. We didn't see any windows, no form of propulsion, nothing, just a big white object.
"It was rounded on both ends and had a cylindrical body which rounded in, same front to back.
“I couldn't tell what it was made of, it was bright white but it wasn't reflecting a bunch of light."
Fravor flew towards it and the aircraft began ascending towards him, passing him at about 12,000 ft. He thinks he got within half a mile of it.
He said: “I literally chased the thing and it started to mirror us, it was like it became aware we were there. I cut across to see if I could get closer and it rapidly accelerated and disappeared. Within a matter of a second it was gone.”

Asked what was going through his mind, he said: "I was thinking 'That's pretty strange'. In 16 years of flying I had never seen anything like that. Nothing that can hover and climb at that rate up and then accelerate and just disappear.

To make a simple contact of two messages like "Hello there. How are you?" ... "I'm fine, thanks" with aliens that live 1 billion light years away, we will need at least 2 billion of years on Earth. I don't think our civilization will be alive till that time
