Who Here Finds It Harder Working at a Computer as they Get Older?

Who else here is finding it harder to work at a computer as they get older? Years of sitting has not done my back much good, and my eyes have taken a lot of strain, although they've improved a bit recently thank goodness. As I get older, the importance of taking breaks has really hit home to me. Just from the mental effort of doing tasks on a computer, I find it's a good idea to take frequent short breaks, and try to zone out, just to give time for my brain cells to recharge. Funnily enough, I was watching a YouTube video today, which was talking about how top tennis pros zone out between points, and it helps them. I think we need to do the same thing, microrelaxation if you like.

A pic for you:

Cheers

Not at all. I work a lot of hours every day at a PC and I've never had any problems. I also try to be active when I am off line or not working.

Yes I also try to get some activity in, mountain biking and walking, just to balance out the amount of sitting I do and try to keep in good shape. I'd like to do more but it's time.

I work from my phone except on days I need horsepower. I find it hard to work in general the older I get

These days I wear (progressive) trifocal glasses since anything nearer or farther than about two feet away (typical distance for my desktop monitor) is out of focus. Prior to working on computers, I've aways had perfect 20/20 vision all my life.

I tend to partially blame all the years I've spent post-editting my photography for countless hours every day. My eyes just became accustomed to locking focus at the same distance for very long periods of time.

And for the past year I've been battling chronic ocular migraines with a number of prescription medications - the latest of which is 50mg daily of amitriptyline combined with over-the-counter Exedrins when the ocular visions start. But we haven't figured out 100% whether staring at the computer is a trigger for these.

So yeah, my experience is workin' on a computer creates problems and issues the older I get. I consciously try and take more breaks away from it, though...although it's not always easy.

I do basketball - just shoot hoops by myself. Just to stretch out my fingers.

I think it helps.

Try to budget some time each day to get away from your computer. Take a walk, or bike or even better, jog. Get up early, but go to bed early too get get 7-8 hours of sleep. Try to eat better, and drink more water, etc. Just a few little things can make a big difference in how you feel, and improve your concentration.

I was already lazy and I keep getting lazier. Thank Cronos for kids. Pretty soon I'll be too lazy to manage people, and I'll have to get a manager.

I have a standing desk (with the option of sitting) and prescription computer glasses. It doesn't make it 100% easier, but it helps.

Sitting is slowly killing you. Stand as much as possible. We're made to stand on our feet, not sit on our butts.

In the 80s I sold office furniture and a big selling point was the comfort of people who had just started to use computers in offices, We recognised the dangers of people sitting for long periods of time at a workstation. A good chair, screen and keyboard at the right position is essential as are breaks. Just get up and walk to make a tea/coffee get a drink of water. And get regular exercise.

blue blocker glasses are great...much less strain on the eyes for me...

also:

change your sitting position OP...get a yoga ball and a kneeling chair...do not use just one sitting position...the human body is not designed to sit in one position for 8+ hours...use a chair for 2-3 hours then the yoga ball and then the kneeling chair in rotation...or use a couch and laptop...do not just sit in one chair and one position for decades...

not at all... just don't undestand how someone can "work" from phone... I only use it for calls, maybe check email once a month... I'm a serious webmaster that needs a powerful desktop+big screen.

This year i couldn´t read the lock on my suitcase and read lettres on the screen
After 47 years without glasses i needed them to be able to read.
I was also working on my backup laptop than cause the other was broken.
My new laptop has much better screen, and with better contrast i can read the screen again without glasses
And also took some rest cause when tired first thing that happens is that i see less.
I will look at those blue blocker glasses.

But is it from working behind a screen? Most of my friends already had reading glasses for years, and they don't work with computers.

I do most my online work on my phone now. Only time I hit the PC is to code.

But yeah I found it mentally harder to sit at a PC for hours every day like I use to. Kids are getting older, I'm getting older... wife needs time and all that. I just got tired of trying to balance it all and had to put most my time into what's more important, my family. Physically I didnt have any issues, Im only in my mid 30's and I have a standing desk. My one eye is still doing great.

I can do almost everything on my phone on the go now... and the family doesn't bitch anymore.

I can code my own shit, but im not a "coder by trade" nor a designer. I run forums and mainstream stores. I do minimal coding and I buy designs. Once shit is tweaked to my liking, I can do everything else on my phone.

So true!

I sort of need glasses now, after a lifetime of not. Kind of think the eyesight was more using an iPad than the computer, as it started after I got an iPad. Hard to stop using the tablet, after getting used to the convenience. If I were 100% sure it caused the eye issues, instead of only like 95%...

But my body was really having trouble sitting for long stretches, so I invested in a more ergonomic setup. I have a keyboard dropdown on the underside of my desk to position my hands at the most comfortable typing angle and my desk is the right height to perfectly position my monitor, so I don't bend my neck weird, and I got a super adjustable Steelcase Gesture chair. I got my chair done up custom with violet and espresso leather, but they sell the whole Steelcase line on Amazon and I'd genuinely recommend either the Gesture or the Leap. I also use an angled footrest.

Anybody else have comfort gadgets they'd recommend?

Sadly I've encountered both difficulty with my eyes and neck from 20 years of sitting in front of a computer. In fact, this afternoon I'm going to chiropractor for an adjustment due to cervical neck damage. LOL
Oh the joys of getting old. :P
