Does my computer build seem like overkill?

Is this computer build overkill? Does it spec an unnecessary amount of RAM or whatever for maximum speed on media editing? Does this look like enough on the power supply? I welcome suggestions and recommendations.

It does look a bit overkill, 64GB would be more than enough.

You could do with some more storage space too really for media editing unless you're using a NAS or something? Or plan to upload everything to the cloud but that could take some time.

Everything else looks good

Is it Overkill or what

Well, depending on how much memory you need it may be overkill. If you are processing videos and doing video editing then for a PC it seems like a workhorse! Good luck with the new machine I hope it brings you lots of sales and visibility.

This machine will be used for heavy Photoshop and likely some video editing. I'm happy to pay for anything which will speed the production process, especially for video, but not actively trying to throw dough out...

Would you recommend bigger SSD, multiple drives, or ? for storage? I have approximately a gazillion external drives in a filing system with duplicates, but they are not the fastest to work off of course and I'm looking for max speed.

Photoshop eats up the ram so you may end up wanting to up the ram.

This is what I have and it does the trick.

I have the same (something like 50+ external HDs) so I got myself a machine with 1TB of SSD space.

Your setup seems great, very fast, but I would up the storage and possibly the video ram if you are doing 4K batch editing (many files).

They both do! And I'm actually considering adding some more ram on because believe it or not, PS still lags sometimes. That thing is a mfing resource hog.

I would add a 4tb ssd just for video editing or nvme drive so you have more space.

Besides that looks like a great machine.

Your power supply is overkill. 550w with a higher efficiency would have been plenty. You don't need that much power unless you are running two video cards in SLI or something. You also bought the wrong ram (ideal would be DDR4-4000) and unless that's a 128gbyte kit it's probably not gonna run correctly in dual channel mode/xmp

Thanks. That is interesting. What do you think of these RAM options?

Corsair VENGEANCE® LPX 128GB (4 x 32GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz C16 Memory Kit - Black

Or 2 of

VENGEANCE® LPX 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR4 DRAM 4000MHz C18 Memory Kit - Black

Will the 4000 spec on the RAM make a lot of difference for non-gaming usages? With the chip shortage, 128 GB kits are hard to come by and a lil inflated. The RAM is probably the component I'm least decided on.

I have fairly similar, but only 64GB of RAM and Intel i9 9th gen. I also have 4 1TB NVMe's, then a 6TB SATA.

I can encode a few videos in a couple minutes with 30 tabs open in Chrome and never notice it.. other than obviously knowing what's going on.

3600 ram is OK, 4000 is ideal, 2666 is too slow for AMD RYZEN. Something liek a 5% performance difference I read between 3600 and 4000. You don't need 128gb of ram, 64 is probably overkill even.

The power supply get a 550 or 600 max, highest efficiency you can find (wiill be cheaper electric bills). Good brand name one.

I would get a second one but you can also just upgrade your main drive won’t be a big performance difference.

You've already spent the money.
Personally, I think your setup is fantastic - Wish I had 128 on mine.

You've always been top notch and will continue to be top notch with that set-up.
That 'VENGEANCE" is insane no matter which one you chose!

Just kick on back and enjoy the power! - I'm jealous!

What do you like better for processor? I've read conflicting benchmark tests on whether the threadrippers are really faster for media production. Are you thinking those or something else?

Once someone becomes an Intel fan, it's hard to get them back over to AMD lol

When its a system built for video editing and photoshop etc, I don't think overkill exists.

I've got Intel machines now, but the i9 chips don't seem to benchmark that well against the AMD releases of the past two years or so. Is there a non-performance spec I should be factoring in?

I will never in my life need to process as much content as you do, so take the following with a big, massive, huge pile of salt. But my I9 9th gen does exactly what I intended for it to do.. which is to never be an issue or THE issue.

My PC runs extremely smoothly no matter what I'm doing - this monitor is always work, but my 4k monitor is where any video processing happens, gaming, etc. I have 48 tabs open right now on this monitor and just ran Apex on max settings (in 4K) with 90FPS.

But I'm an Intel guy. I will probably consider an AMD for my next build in 3-4 years because they HAVE caught up / passed Intel recently, but that also means their latest processors haven't been around long enough to get their ass whooped day in and day out to see if that performance maintains over time.. or if that processor itself maintains over time. Which is why I went Intel / I9 on my build. Maybe I'm losing some nanoseconds somewhere, but I'm confident it'll work for as long as I need it to.

If you do stick with the AMD, though, I would be extremely curious to see how it holds up over time.

I consider myself, in NO way an authority on high end professional video editing specs, but I DO know a hell of a lot about high end Gaming PCs. That's because I have built myself a 'state of the art' gaming PC in the past.

How I learnt about them, was mostly from the 'Linus Tech Tips' channel. Now I present to you 2 videos, approx a year old, relating to your editing build.

First video below is him building his 'no expense spared rig' piece by piece, and explaining his reasons and logic behind each component as he goes... I also add a second video, again, approx a year old, which discusses him upgrading from a 16 to 32 thread 'ThreadRipper' and his reasons for doing so...

I suggest watching these videos, or at least skipping through them. I've always found Linus to be very easy to understand, and that's basically what I did when it came to my gaming PC. I wanted the absolute best, but not the most absolutely expensive just for the sake of it. So I extrapolated the relevant info from Linus, found myself aware of some pitfalls and fallacies, and ended up with a machine that still works as well today as in 2019 when I built it, and can still give the latest games a good kicking at max settings

So I say listen to Linus. He's a GREAT starting point

Just to add, that when it comes to a gaming PC, you can easily reach a point of diminishing returns, such as RAM for example. 16GB is normally enough, 32GB the sweet spot, (cost VS performance) 64GB on the overkill side, and 128GB pointless as no 'game' on the market today, or even tomorrow, will benefit from that amount of RAM, or even be able to make use of it...

But when it comes to editing, I really dont think you can ever have 'Too Much' of anything

You can decrease amount of RAM and buy additional m.2 storage for 256gb or 512gb to install your windows on it. If you keep it clean from other files - your PC will be thankful
