How Many Major Porn Companies Are Still Filming Updates?

Forget Covid-19, the pandemic, shutdowns...during "normal times" how many major porn Companies are still filming weekly (or monthly) updates?

Naughty America, Perfect Gonzo, Bang Bros, etc. These types of companies.

I would imagine it is only sites and companies with very large rebilling Members. With a typical porn shoot costing anywhere from $1,000-$5,000 (or more) the economics of paysite porn in 2021 makes me wonder who is still shooting these days.

Another question is how long does it now take for a company to recoup its' initial shooting investment? In the olden Golden days it would take anywhere from a few days to a couple months to get your initial shooting cost back. But now? Hmm...

PornCMS only has around 10% dormant sites (auto rotating content). everyone else is shooting. we have a majority of hobbyists tho - aka making less than a living wage on their sites. 30% of the site owners are full-time.

Thansk for the replies everyone! Interesting info because I know just a couple years ago or so many companies had pulled way back on production. Piracy, tubes, site rips etc was making it difficult to recoup the initial shooting costs. I guess things have changed and that's a great thing!!

I plan on shooting new content this Fall in Europe so this is why I am asking. I am launching brand-new 4k POV sites in 2022.

WE did not shoot in 2020 now are gearing up to catch up ( will shoot 10 days in August)
Our recoupment has not changed significantly based on "dollar in and dollar out". We recoup about 6 to 8 months after release. More important to us: we double in about a year.

Thank you! This is more in line with what I myself have experienced and seen with other companies. But Duke says it takes him only 12 hours to recoup the initial shooting cost so either DD has many thousands of members or they are killing it on Joins (or both).

I am basing these assumptions - always a dangerous game, I realize - on a "typical" B/G hardcore shoot costing anywhere from $800-$3000+ (based on whether it is POV, a whole crew, a small crew, etc).

WHERE a company is filming makes a huge difference, too. If it's in the USA (especially California or Florida) it's going to be way more expensive than in Czech Republic, Hungary or South America (or some parts of Asia).

I made the decision not to shoot during a pandemic.

I would expect some things to go back to normal soon, but all the economic factors are so strange and unprecedented that I would not bet pre-pandemic recoup numbers will be the same as now.

We stopped shooting recently ... but it was profitable doing so till the end.

Say 2 x 1,5k shoots per month require just 50-100 sales to break even if you include upsales & extras...so 2-3 sales per day will make it break even. That is doable....which I guess is why the paysite model still exists.

Exactly how and when an individual release breaks even makes little sense to even attempt to calculate (unless selling per movie) - a member buys in on the full package and stays for the updates generally...

That's what we have the production companies for. We don't do most of that. Editing/encoding yes but no recruiting, shooting, etc.

Some people count all revenue associated with a scene - ad rev, upsells, cross-sells, etc.

For me I focus on the cash in/out aspect but the larger the company (and Member base) the quicker it is to recoup.

Just to clarify: CZ is not as cheap as it used to be, but models are cheaper then in the USA four sure. I have NO idea what BG, anal etc...costs since we make strictly lesbian only content and most is simulated (glamour style). A model will cost about USD $ 500/ 12 h day. Our "day" consists of about 6 hours siting about, 4 hours "walking and talking" and maybe only 2h of lesbian content. We run VOD site and make feature films. Our revenue is 100% from folks actually buying a movie stream or renting one. We have NO membership. We do not have any other sources. So if we make a shitty movie they do not come in droves,if we make a nice one, they come and buy. Each movie now has about 5 to 7 shooting days, in our own film studios. In the good old days we had the " luxury" of 12 to 14 days.

Thanks for this great info!! For B/G shoots in CZ I would probably add another $300 USD to make it $800 per shoot but not sure what the actual going rates are these days. I will find out in the Autumn.

With your business model it's totally understandable to take six months to recoup (break even). It's great you have such a loyal customer base! Having your own setup in CZ is sweet too. I will reach out when I am there to buy you guys as many pilsners as possible.

Currently I am rotating content in the various Members Areas so it appears as if weekly updates are happening. Not ideal but with everything shut down for the past year or so it's probably for the best. I have not seen a drop in rebills. A small rise, in fact.
