Ugh, for years it's considered the worst diet ever, then all the sudden it's the holy grail of nutrition, now it's dangerous again.

I went to school with a girl who's father was the CEO and she was always getting into arguments when the health teachers told us how bad it is for you.

Like I had this friend that drank Vanilla pepsi and her head shrank to half it's normal size in one month!

Don't you just love it when "some friend" always has some sort of "bad experience" with the subject matter?

Scotland..the home of fine cuisine! Oh yeah..let's listen to some Scottish doctors as opposed to our own fine doctors and scientists and even the heart association that have come out with numerous papers on how beneficial the Atkins diet it. In fact, in most cases, had better results than a low fat diet.

But you can always find someone who will say: "Breathing air is harmful to your body!"

If you're fat, listen to Tony Robbins... he'll make you feel like shit and you'll lose weight... I've never been fat, but I would be scared to listen to his shit with a friend who is... he's pretty harsh towards the overweight for a motivational speaker.

I tried atkins for 3 weeks once. It made me not be thirsty after about a week and eventually I pretty much dehydrated. The worst part is I didn't shit for nearly a week then I had the most painful night of my life.

Atkins = bad, in my opinion.

Indeed. He doesn't use terms like "over weight" or "obese". He comes out and says " You are fat, lose weight fatty."

I like that

Hahaha, yes he does. It's wildly entertaining... it makes me feel better just hearing him freak out when he's explaining things. Good times.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Atkins. It is not the eat steak and butter everynight diet. It is a well rounded diet that includes almost all vegetables and some fruits. You simply cut carbs and sugars out of your daily intake (bread, rice, corn, pasta and sugary treats). Once you do that your body has no choice but to burn the fat you have stored.

The problems that arise from Atkins are with those people who really don't know what the fuck they are doing, who don't bother to even read the website and the book, and who just follow the myths and bad advice they hear form their friends or on TV.

I have not yet tried Atkins myself, as I am an avid beer drinker and sadly, you must cut beer out of your diet on Atkins. However I have thoroughly read the website, some of the book, and have a boss who's lost 30 pounds on it and feels great.

There was an article on finnish newspapers last week about a finnish girl whose heart stopped on the diet.
After I red the article, I decided to give it a go. I had bacon.

Here we have a perfect example of an Atkins misconception. You don't just eat meat on this diet. Vegatables, fruits, at least a cup of salad a day, are important parts of this diet.

Humans are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day under optimum conditions, no matter what diet you are on.

Low carb beer hey? I'm guessing it's lighter in color than my piss, and my piss probably tastes better

I've tried it, and it made me feel like I wass gonna pass out. Plus, I got nauseous and had some of the worst headaches ever.

And for those who say "Oh, but you can eat plenty of fruits and vegetables with Atkins": Bullshit. Just read about it. During induction, all fruits are just about forbidden. You can eat vegetables, but not nearly enough. The amount of carbs you are allowed to eat per day is not sufficient for that.

Instead of doing Atkins, people should just work out often and stop eating too much junkfood. Works better than Atkins, and it's probably a lot healthier.

Actually you can have up to 3 cups of salad vegetables a day...and if you have never eaten 3 cups of lettuce it's alot more than you realize.

Not only that but when on Atkins it acts as a diuretic so you're supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day = 64 oz...and then another 8 oz for every 25 pounds you need to lose. I'm currently drinking like 120-140oz of water a day.

You're also supposed to take alot of supplements especially during the induction phase in order to make sure you're getting plenty of vitamins and minerals, and to replenish what electrolytes you pass through your system.

I've lost 19 pounds in 1 month, my blood pressure has dropped to 127 over 75 and my blood sugar level is 102.

I no longer suffer from hypertension, or energy drops in the mid afternoon.

I am eating more vegetables than I have EVER in my life. I eat salads, fresh cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts.

This is not a high fat, high protein diet at all. If you read the book you'd understand that.

The whole progam leads you to a point where you have a well balanced diet of fats, proteins, and carbs...and what you do take in is not a bunch of processed crap.

I have had only trace amounts of sugar since I started this diet.

And that's only from maybe a hidden sugar in a salad dressing etc.

And that's coming from a guy who could sit down and eat a pound of those orange jelly slices in one night.

I just don't crave it like I used to.

What cravings I do have is for something high in protein.

And for this diet being dangerous. ANY diet CAN be dangerous.

Which is why Dr. Atkins suggests many things to ensure your health through this process...like the supplements I discussed, the water and more importantly initial testing with your doctor before starting the plan followed up by periodic testing with your doctor.

Sorry for such a long post but dammit I weighed 320 pounds when I started this.

I was dying anyway. At least now I feel like I have a chance at getting my life back to normal.

And don't give me this shit about just cutting out certain foods and exercise.

Yes it works for some, but this diet is truly meant for those who have led a seriously addicted carb lifestyle.

And thanks to Dr. Atkins. I'm no longer a slave to those addictions.

Through a well balanced diet, and some will power I have not cheated 1 single time since I started this plan on July 21st.

#1 the nausea and headaches are explained.
It's due to you getting rid of toxins in your body as well as fighting addictions to processed sugars.

#2 regarding fruits and vegetables. You are correct in that you cannot eat alot of fruits on this plan during induction. But as you progress to ongoing weight loss and then eventually the maintenance plan you can eat plenty.
Now regarding strictly induction...you are wrong about the amount of vegetables you can eat.
Here's a list of foods you can eat on induction:
http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-464579.html

I eat 10-20 olives a day, on top of either 1 cup of broccoli and 1 cup of cauliflower either raw or steamed, as well as 1/2 an avocado. If I don't have the broccoli or cauliflower I then eat a combination of romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and mushrroms totalling 3 cups.

#3 regarding not enough carbs.
That's the whole purpose of induction.
Is to force your body into ketosis.
http://atkins.com/helpatkins/faqs/faqWhatisketosis.html

Your body burns fat in place of the carbs which is why in induction you have to eat so much fat but still lose weight.

what a concept...
it's hard to get started but once you do it actually feels good to exercise and do weights.. especially if you can do it at home.

I love how people think there are simple answers to years of learned behaviour.

yes exercise is extremely important which is stressed on the Atkins diet.

but you're not taking into consideration what drives people to eat what they eat.

processed foods high in carbs are extremely addicting, they are designed that way which is why it's difficult to just eat one potato chip.
There is also emotional eating.
Atkins tries to get you to look at these issues.

People are cool with all of the other addictions out there. If you're an alcoholic go into treatement they give you a benzodiazepam in order to help with the withdrawals, same thing with drug addicts. Heroin addicts have methadone to help stave off the cravings.

Smoke cigs you have the patch, the gum etc.

But someone decides to follow a plan that actually helps you control some of these food addictions and your only answer is just "exercise."

Humans need carbs. The brain runs off of glucose. It's as simple as that.

This blood sugar is obtained from carbohydrates: the starches and sugars you eat in the form of grains and legumes, fruits and vegetables. (The only animal foods containing a significant amount of carbohydrates are dairy products.)

Too much sugar or refined carbohydrates at one time, however, can actually deprive your brain of glucose ? depleting its energy supply and compromising your brain's power to concentrate, remember, and learn. Mental activity requires a lot of energy.

Now...The carbs won't put on weight UNLESS you don't fucking exercise! The problem with people who go on fad diets is that they rarely get off of their ass and do some cardio/weights/swinnimg/sports.

If you burn the carbs, you don't put on weight. It's that simple. Does anybody ever wonder WHY Atkins himself had a heart attack?

Is that even good for you, though? I can't imagine that it would be.

People are so concerned about the # of pounds dropped without considering the actual health benefits/problems associated with it.

Yeah, he fell and hit his head. That´s how he died and the girl with heart failure was american, not finnish.

Well first of all Adkins is not really meant to be a diet as much as it is a lifestyle change in the way that you eat. There is alot more to it than just reducing your carb and sugar intake. When I was first introduced to the plan years ago I realized just how important it was to gain an understanding of the conepts at work and why the body acts like it does.

Bottom line to anyone considering Adkin's, it works but as with many things it is not always easy. Read the book and it will help you to understand what is taking place.

Oh, and by the way KETOSIS RULES!

I'm trying the Zone. It's a little better than atkins, you do have a little carbs in your diet to make it more balanced. But the philosophy with The Zone is to use food as a medicine, view it that way and you'll lose fat in no time.

I'm in the same boat as anyone here thinking about losing weight. A tubby webmaster who gets 0 exercise sits down ALL day and eats sweet food and has for years. however I'm not so retarded as to not be aware that if i got off my fat ass for more than a few minutes a day i could feel comfortable taking my shirt off at the beach.
it's not learned behavior it's being a fucking lazy cunt.
why do you think they recommend exercise with EVERY diet there is..

If you don't want to be fat - stop eating like a fucking pig

I didn't actually read past the first line of your post eros. and i can't alter my other post.

Being addicted to fatty food doesn't somehow stop you from being able to make a bike's wheels go round with your legs and if you've got emotional issues that make you want to eat, you need a psychologist not a new diet.

I am responsible for my weight and it's my own fault im not fit. Everyone gets addicted to fatty food. I would rather be shot in the face than whine about it. The best and simplest solution is for me to get out and do some cardio and weights. That way I can eat whatever the hell I want whenever I want it and still lose weight. what a revelation.. which is what im trying to do at the moment.
But whatever.. if it works for people, great, at least they're doing something about it.. the diet industry just pisses me off. preying on vulnerable people and making money.

Scandinavian state health agencies say that people should avoid Atkins.

It's overhyped. It's not good for you. Try exercise + veggies and cut down on fat, sugar, alcohol.

For some odd reason, Americans like these miracle cures. The cure-all pill. The cure-all diet. Use common sense instead. The Atkins Corporation only wants your money.

Yes. We're suckers for magic pills and fad diets.

This way we can treat ourselves like crap, then pull out the pill and lose 30 lbs in 3 weeks for that big occasion. We don't need to make an effort at anything.

it can be dangerous if you do not read the book and follow it strictly mainly in the introduction level...
i do low carb during the week and cheat on the weekends, back to drinking coffee and always training and i'm in the best health and shape i can ever been in... I've been eating like this for about 10 months now... I recently did all my blood work to find out that i am the healthest i have even been in my life.

only the first stages are hard, after that it's easy street... you can not look at it as a 'diet'... its a way of life...

it's nice to see that low carb is going mainstream and the big food products are jumping on that band wagoon...

it used to be low fat craze...
now low carb will hit every super market... watch...

i can't wait...
