its just sitting there, doesnt respond to anything

if i turn it off for a while, it will work again but just for a little while then it locks up again

I would think it might be hardware as well... something with the motherboard. check the system resources though.. make sure the IRQ's didnt get screwed up.

I had that same thing with win2k
can't for the life of me remember what fixed it, though.
(it's been a while)
The things I did:
Go to windows update regularly
Update anti-virus regularly
Run AdAware and Spybot regularly
Xteq Systems from lockergnome.com is very useful for deciding which memory-resident things you load at startup....come to think of it, it was probably after some tweaking with this one that I got rid of the problem.

Do you use heat sync are all the fans working most likely it's not irq conflict cause you get blue screen and it's not Ram....Almost sure it's hardware related...

no email runs on this machine though, and its behind a pretty good firewall

I'll run a virus scan just in case though

yeah the CPU has a heat sink with a fan.. is it possible the fan just broke?

would that make the machine just lock up?

Sounds like hardware to me as well. One of my workhorses just died after three years of faithful service. It had started getting random lock ups when it never had them before (even on fresh OS installs), and weird bugs in software that had been stable for ages. One day I had just finished compiling something, I tried out the new software and it was totally buggy and I thought "well that's a shit program" and then the motherboard died, total meltdown, even the door on the cd drive wouldn't close. So you might want to back that machine up.

Alot of times if this happens you would get a blue screen.....with it over heating you lose system stability......sometimes you can find the cpu temp in the bios or you could use a inside outside themometer.....

Sounds more like a hardware issue! Check your fans, check your memory! Your CPU might be overheating!

In my case it wasn't hardware, it was DEFINITELY software.
It was the exact same problem
Really, install Xteq Systems from lockergnome.com and play with which memory-resident programs load at startup. I'm almost postive that that was the way I fixed it in the end.

If that didn't work try:

1) A roll back as some nasty little plugin might be doing it.

2) Make sure your rack is facing North. It could be a fung shui thing

try switching ports.

if you're using USB try switching to PS2 and if you're using PS2 ports try using USB instead.

Def could be a fan, the computer will just lock up if the fan is spinning slow or not spinning at all.

since i am not tech oriented at all, and the same OS...
I disabled all the "sounds" that accompany the tasks.
[it seemed to happen when i would mouse click]
did that 3 weeks ago and went from 7-8 lockups a day to none.

weird......

I also cleaned the fans [i smoke and it definitely showed]

I had a smiliar problem yesterday. (well it started on x-mas day) I couldnt get anything to open. It either said that my .DLL files were missing, I was out of memory, or it would just lock up.

I ran ad-aware and that helped, but not enough. I ended up having to back up all my files and then I reformatted my hard drive, and installed new drivers. I spent all day yesterday doing this.

I was a little pissy at first with having to spend the day trying to fix shit, but now I am 100% better. I even upgraded my windows.

No more problems

I've had that problem with two computers. The first time it was a virus. The second time was very strange. I had a warranty and I kept sending it into the manufacturer and they sent it back every time saying there was nothing wrong with it. I then put it in a computer repair shop for like 2 days and they also said they couldn't find a problem and couldn't get it to freeze. I couldn't use it for 20 minutes without it freezing. Then my HD died and replacing it didn't fix the problem. I ended up just upgrading the motherboard and CPU which finally fixed it.
