How hard is it to live and work temporarily in another country?

When you're a self employed adult webmaster?

Has anyone here spent a short amount of time travelling around and living and working in another country?

I'd just like to spend a few months to a year in another country just to live in a different culture for a short while. Preferrably Canada cuz it's so cheap and close, but I heard if you want to work, which I'll need to do via the web, you'll need a workers permit. Is this hard to get if you don't have a "sponsor" and work for myself? I'd consider Amsterdam too, don't know how rigid the rules are for temporary visitors status in a different country.

I can only answer the first part of your question... Living temporarily in another country is a wonderful experience. I have been in the states for 2 years and i have two more year to live. I met so many great people who I will miss when I am done with the school. All i can say is, I am glad that i made this though decision for coming here and experiencing american culture as well as many other cultures living in the Usa.

I would say go for it...

Why do you need a work permit if you're self employed? If your site is on a server in america, or canada, then that's where you're working. You could live in Thailand if you want and not need a work permit. Your money would be going to your home country's account and you would be withdrawing it via an ATM card. Therefore, all you are is a tourist who takes pictures. Tourists don't need work permits.

I've been to different parts of the caribbean and africa. I know damn well that I could live like a king if i went overseas. I plan on doing more travelling real soon to shoot some content for my new Indian site.

I say just bring your laptop and your camera and travel to any country that you choose. Just stay near an ATM machine, a telephone, an internet connection, and the best hospital that country has available, and guard that atm card and your passport with your life!

The last thing you need to worry about is a work permit.

Well, your interpretation of where you are working doesn't matter. The official interpretation fo the jurisdiction youi're in is what matters. What if they arrest you and they don't accept your logic? Then you're fucked.

People who are used to American laws and rights I think will have a little hard time living in different countries, where there are no laws whatsoever and nobody gives a crap about your rights.

Well, I would want to do the exact same thing sometime... even the countries you picked are the same... either Montreal or Amsterdam for me... Montreal is much much closer though...

(1) Temporarily living there is perfectly fine. Almost any country would have no problem with somebody living there (except Australia where they are REALLY strickt with incoming people) as long as...

(2)... you do NOT work there. It's a BIG problem (unless you are a citizen of one of the EU's countries and go to another European country). But hell WHO CARES if you work online and get the same fucking WIRES in your account in US or something.

IRS: All US Citizens working and residing overseas are required to file and report on their worldwide income. See IRS Publication 54 for an explanation of filing requirements and benefits.

That's in your passport on page 3 if you have one.

I don't think having double citizenship requires to pay US taxes. Cause some countries allow to have two passports.

you also might want to check up on the country that you choose because I know some countries, if you stay there long enough, will make you pay taxes on the money you earn while there. I had seen a story on the Rolling Stones and their last tour a while ago and they had to reschedule some of the dates so the could leave the USA for a little while then come back because the were going to be here longer than 9 months otherwise and the US government was going to make the pay taxes on the money they earned while here. So you wouldn't want to get stuck paying taxes to 2 different countries at the same time

Australia is the easiest place to get intop if you are are wanting to move here the Correct way - I think you've been watching too much TV news.
Australia just has a huge problem wiht refugees right now - it's understandable that they don't wantr to let all these albanians and arabs in - becuase Indonesia is right on the dorrstep - and the last thing Australia needs is 65 million Idonesians all coming in on their floating sardine cans claiming refugee status

If you go thru the correct channels - Austrlia is one of the easiest countris to move to - although if you are planning to move permamnently you might wanna chose somewhere else as the laws in Oz re: internet porn and tax etc are all changing andgetting really screwy

I'm reading there are some technology parks in South America where you can basically pay for an office (and probably everything is wired for high-bandwidth) and the local government sets up the whole location to be TAX FREE and even provides special benefits allowing your business to import equipment, supplies, vehicles, etc. w/o import taxes (which can be otherwise very expensive in some counties) -- I'd be really curious to know more about these parks -- sounds like a cool way to live... especially since you are living and working in a tropical paradise, you neighbors in the park are most likely really sharp internet nerds, you've got bandwidth, and you're not paying any taxes... Sweet deal.

Which country? Where did you hear about this?

I am packing my shit if that is true.

The only reason I dont move my ass to a so called "tax haven" is the horrific state of internet connectivity.

Bandwidth and no tax. I call that place heaven.

Usual offshore tax havens work the way they do based on the requirement that you DO NOT reside their personally -- only the entity does.

I'd be interested to hear how this South American thing is set up.

I don't see why one would need any work visa when one is not seeking to take any work away from anyone in the country one wishes to holiday in. [Nice 3rd person type stuff there ]

I see no reason why you can't just go on holiday and run your business as normal... It's location of operation stays the same.

If you really required a work visa to keep your business running while in another country, even though it's true physical presence doesn't not follow you into the country you visit, then by this logic, would you not also need some sort of work visa for each country you make money out of traffic that resides there... [Fuck, that'd be a lot of fucking work visa's .. (but then again, governments and countries can be pretty fucking stupid and illogical, so if in doubt, make a phone call... Get advice straight from those that are directly in the know... But it would be seriously fucked up if you did).

You want a funny internet law... lol,(sorry, it's funny just thinking about it )... Anyone in Australia can play online casinos and win money, or lose money, BUT, it's illegal in Australia for any Australian owned casino in Australia to make an Australian run casino website. [Sensible legislation eh... Just let all other countries make money off your gamblers... Afterall gambling online is not illegal... They think stopping Aus. Casinos from starting up online protects problem gamblers.. lol.. But if one were started in Australia then problem gamblers could get some help back in the form of a cut the Aus. government would make in extra taxes from casinos being re-directed into gambling help programs to assist problem gamblers kick the habit... TOO FUCKING FUNNY ]

Lexxx:
As for Australia, we take in shitloads of refugees,(legit ones) and the ones that are bullshited about on the news in detension centers and all that are generally just loud mouthed phoneys that sucker in stupid gullable do gooders to try to speil their bullshit in hopes of forcing the government to cave and give in to their demands to live here perminantly and then get government monies for being out of work and live it up in the sun. [We've got a pretty good unemployment, family assistance package in this country... Refugees, if accepted, OBVIOUSLY, get handouts till they can find work,(if they ever even really seek work, in terms of the phoneys that con their way in for a cushy lifestyle)]

Forgein news programs just wish ratings, so I doubt they show the true story most of the time, just the ranting bullshit and some wire fence crap etc..

What happens is if you get to Aussie soil your chances of getting accepted in were pretty dam good,(due to weak laws.. or RATHER TOO LENIENT) but thankfully laws are being tightened to be fair to true refugees that have made a harrowing voyage or those that went through the proper channels.

Most refugees that try to get into Australia are purely illegal, OR they are not true refugees in the sense that a true refugee would seek shelter and acceptance at the 1ST safe port of call... HOWEVER, many of these illegals claiming to be refugees BYPASS Safe ports of call,(countries) because if they can bullshit their way into our country then they can live a pretty fucking good life.

[If you wish to know how easy it is to visit Australia just ask a few asians,(from Asia, not your own locals.. "DUH".. lol) where one of their favourite destinations for a holiday is, or one of the places they would most like to visit and will soon be travelling to for a holiday... Then just grab your camera and tag along]

[Work visas are easier to obtain if you belong to one of the commonweath countries in particular New Zealand or England, but that's about it... It's easy to get in and visit Australia and very inexpensive to do so]

Australia is pretty easy going... Fair Dinkum'

{You see how big this is... You really think I kept re-reading and spell checking... EEK .. lol .. E&OE .. hehe}

Jesus I can talk

bhutocracy:
If you were accepted as a refugee and allowed to stay in Australia you would HAVE to be accepted and receive SOME FORM of financial payment until you were able to get work, else you would be just accepting refugees to then add to your homeless population.

I know all governments are pretty thick, but I don't think any are QUITE that stupid,..(just yet anyhow... lol).

Thus there needs to be some form of interum payment and shelter refugees can get until they can find work,(family payments, dole, whatever) .. and for unskilled refugees this would mean the payments would run longer as it would take them longer to find work... The government isn't gonna just say "yupp, well you managed to prove yourself a refugee.. or just sneak by our laws... so you and your family can stay... HERE'S A CARDBOARD BOX, for you're not gonna get any help... now you're a refugee here... btw we call them homeless people.. try the cross, you may meet a few friends down there to huddle with on cold nights... well Welcome to Australia... Now piss off... you've got 2 years to wait before you get any form of financial help... go on...fuck off"

I don't think this would be the case... do you bhutocracy?

[Though it sounds kinda funny and stupid like a normal government decision.. lol ]

Btw people that are accepted here legally that are NOT refugees but wish to live in Australia DO have to wait something like 2-3 years before they can claim anything like the dole etc. in general

Labret, I believe this was in Belize, I read about it in one of these offshore investment mags that seem to be in most bookstores... I'm sure there are more of these tech. parks -- but for some reason it's hard for me to find online info about these locations... I'm probably just not looking hard enough. I should probably look into it more though...
