Can someone explain this "Server" information to me...

I use to have a 1500 GIG Bandwidth transfer a month... It handles the traffic. It had 100mbps attached to it...

I'm looking at the unmetered 1 GB RAM - (2) 80GB Hard Drives
10 Mbps unlimited Monthly Transfer

Does that term mbps deal with server speed? Seems when I upgraded, my site got slower. Is it because of the 10mbps?

When dealing with High Traffic Websites it's best to get a 100mbps?

10 Mbps unlimited means you can transfer at that speed 10 Mega (million) bits per second, minus TCP overhead, etc it comes out to 7-8 Mbps, but if it's on a 10 Mbps port it can never go over that speed.

1500 GB per month on a 100 Mbps port will seem much faster as it can burst up to 100 Mbps, but you don't want to go over about 4.5 Mbps average for the month or you will pay overage fees since it will be more than 1500 GB transfered.

See if you can get 10 Mbps on a 100 Mbps or Gigabit port, then it can burst to higher speeds.

Hard to tell you what is going on without much more info.

How much bandwidth do you use in a month, what was the hardware specs of both machines, what scripts are running, is apache/mysql properly tuned, etc. etc.

at less then 1500 gb per month, I dont think you'd notice traffic slow down on a 10mbps line. Unless of course you are on an oversold service, with 50 x 10mbps servers all hooked up to a single 100mbps uplink

Old Server:
Intel Celeron 1.3 GHz
512 RAM
60GB Hard Drive
1500 GB Monthly Transfer
(100 Mbps interface)

New Server:
Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz Packages
1 GB RAM - (2) 80GB Hard Drives
10 Mbps unlimited Monthly Transfer

I was averagin out at about 2500 GB a month so I use to always go over so I use to have to pay BIG overages fee's. So I decided I wanted to upgrade. I was under the impression that the 10mbps unlimited monthly would solve my bandwidth issues. But the new server only slowing down my sites to an extreme. Some files load at 7.35 kbs... Painfully slow... It'll even report Packet loss, images not displaying on sites, sometimes pages not loading at all... Was it because I was reduced to the 10 mbps?

Like most occassions of having to basically *predict* what you're goingto need like 6mos. from now, because you have to *invest that hardware today, the theoretical *peak* of your demand is probably a HARD number -- meaning you would not be buying any new hardware, unless you had some pretty good sense of the ceiling you were beginning to scratch -- -- But now the question of how much to spend boils down to whether you're going to spec out yer shit for MOMENTARY BURSTS of X or for SUSTAINED X -- so, basically - if ya got the balls, shoot for sustained --

Well, sounds like the new machine is much nicer hardware. But it could be that you are on oversold lines... so now you got network issues. Or, your network card could be flaky. I'd email your host to look into it and see what they say.

at 2500gb per month, you are most likely saturating your 10mbps uplink during peak periods, or at least coming very close. Do you have an mrtg?

Unless you have spikes above 10 Mbps, you do not need a 100Mbps connection for only 1500GB of data transfer per month.

To clarify things, the 10Mbps is the instant measurement of how many bits per seconds can go through your server connection to the Internet. If you have enough traffic to saturate the 10 Mbps line, you can transfer, any given second, 10 million bits, or 10 / 8 = 1,250,000 bytes.

How does this translate into data transfer? Since there are 2,592,000 seconds in a 30-day month, you can transfer a maximum of 2,592,000 seconds x 1,250,000 bytes ~= 3,240 GB per 30-day month.

These are theoretical numbers. There is some overhead to take into account which varies, depending (among other things) on the quality of your bandwidth. With premium bandwidth, remove 5 to 10 %. With non-premium bandwidth, remove 20% or more.

How do you determine your needs? Quite simple from there. If your 1500GB monthly traffic is relatively constant (this is also called the "sustained bandwidth"), you certainly do not need a 100Mbps connection. That would be overkill and you would pay more without the need for it. On the other hand, if your traffic is such that one hour per day, you burst at 50 Mbps, while the remaining of the day, you consume 1 Mbps, your 10 Mbps connection will not handle the 50 Mbps bursts; it will be capped at 10 Mbps (the maximum speed of your connection). During burst periods, as you approach saturation on your 10 Mbps connection, you will start noticing that your sites are responding slower and slower. Some visitors will not be served at all. In that case, and if your site is mission critical, you might need to spend more money on a 100Mbps connection just to be able to serve your visitors during that one hour per day.

This is why it is critical to know your traffic, not only per month or per day, but also per hour. This knowledge helps you do the proper cost/benefit analysis.

To come back to your original question: "Does that term mbps deal with server speed? Seems when I upgraded, my site got slower. Is it because of the 10mbps?". The answer is actually no, because the term has nothing do do with the server speed itself; it has to do with the connection speed.

Be aware that there are many additional factors that can also impact the apparent speed of your sites: server hardware, configuration and optimization of the operating system and the different services like Apache, the use of scripts, the quality of such scripts, etc. For example, a poorly written script that creates a deadlock with bring your server down to a crawl, even during low traffic periods; such a situation happens more often than one might think.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you need further information.

Before they came to the conclusion that is was going over the 10mbps limit. they replaced cables, switched servers, etc...

Would going over that 10mbps limit extremely slow websites down? So going up to 100mbps will handle all the traffic and downloads?

You are clearly exceeding the 10mbps cap.
Slow servers will cost you sales, move this domain to a server with a 100mbps connection immediately.

The Dual Xeon servers will get you 3000GB transfer a month at ev1.

10mbps ports are brutal... always stick with 100mbps burstable unless you know your traffic won't spike above 10mbps

Thnx! It's mad ironic that the Dual Xeon is what I had my eye on all morning...
Moving immediately!
