They're suspect because I just got an unsolicited spam from them. Some of the scripts, simple as they may be, seem useful enough. However, their pricing and lack of contact info on the website makes me wonder if these are just stolen scripts from some other website. They're selling a package of 5 scripts for just $99 and they have another product that looks cool as hell for allowing one htaccess file to refer to multiple password files.

If nobody thinks these guys are thieves, I just might buy the scripts!

I don't know about them. But, if they are in Russia or India, or here in the U.S. but using offshore programmers, their prices could be dirt cheap.

they are spammers anyways...

but regardless, making a script that you aim the .htaccess at that reads in both .htpasswd files and spits out one list that apache can read is not difficult.

Spamming is just direct marketing. Smart direct marketers try to find lists of likely prospects: people one might reasonably assume could be interested in your product or service.

A list of people who absolutely are interested would be great, but is pretty much a fiction. Things are simply never that cut-and-dried.

Spam, like so-called "junk mail," is the unsolicited mail you don't want. The postal junk mailer risks wasting postage money by poor list selection and management. The online spammer risks various kinds of retaliation, official and otherwise.

No biggie. I took the email and sent it to spamcop like I do with every other spam I get more than once. We'll see if something gets done with them this time. And whatever you do, don't buy anything from them. That will just encourage spamming. If it weren't so profitable, nobody would do it anymore.

I'd buy from a "spammer" if I wanted the product, sure. And if the mail targets the buyer really well, what's the problem? It's not even spam then. Blind mass spam is the only problem.

who decides if the "target" was really intended for you? you got an email regarding something webmaster-ish sure, but that's just luck. they spammed that same shit to 13 year old betsy nobody who just wants to look at nsync pictures online.

most spam is blind spam as far as i'm concerned. if they spam everyone they'll be able to get the people they think would want their product and anyone else who might be interested but never showed or picked that as an interest on whatever site resold their email address to begin with.

email spam is bullshit and i refuse to work with anyone who sends it to me. i've never opted-in to get anything, whether it be hot donkey sex with underage chinese girls or the newest webmaster tools out there, i never told anyone to send me that shit, so it was unsolicited. plain and simple. if i had opted-in at one point to get product announcements or something else, then yes, i obviously expected to get updates or notices about that. other than that, it goes in the bitbucket with the rest of the thousands of spam messages i get a month.

Unsolicited email isn't necessarily unwanted email. Spam is email that's sent out in bulk, indicriminately, with no targeting attempted at all. If a person with some webmaster tools buys a list of the emails of everyone on GFY and then sends us all an email about their tools, is that spam? I say not. Then again, I'd be really pissed if a list like that were ever sold... unless it were sold to someone who wants to sell me something I want, of course!

but not all webmasters are interested in the newest traffic trading script offer. so now you're really expecting them to know not only your market segment but also product choice and desires. is spam that targetted? no. it's just like stereotypes... to say that every [insert race here] is [insert sterotype here] is going to be wrong most of the time.

to say every webmaster in the world wants to know all the latest webmaster "scripts" and "tools" is insane. all bulk-email is considered junk email in my book unless i signed up for it. if i've signed up for it, then i consider that a "mailing list" of sorts.

i am interested in porn. does that mean when i get an email in my inbox telling me there's new porn out there, that was a good "targetted" mass email, because i'm male, horny, and looking for whackin' fuel? NO. otherwise porn spam wouldn't be considered "spam" because everyone loves porn. come on.

summary: just because the email is about something you're interested in, doesn't mean it was "targetted" or "approved" spam. it's still unsolicited.

just wait until you get 250 emails per day about the newest webmaster tools and such, and then you'll be complaining again. when every company in the world figures out "i can open up some place to sell scripts, and spam people, because they don't get offended when i spam them with non-porn, more business-related subjects!!!" i'm sure it will change your mind.

maybe that's just my "the-glass-is-half-empty" view.

Unsolicited email is unwanted email. The last thing I want is someone hitting my email box with "special offers". The scary part is we all get spam so much that some of us are starting to accept it. Thankfully I am still able to see how sinister spam really is. If I ask for a sites "newsletter" then I obviously want spam from them, but unless I have given them my email address, I don't want to hear shit from them. Period.

We are talking about email spam. Search engines, AVS are in the business of taking submissions. There is no comparing email spam with SE or AVS submissions. SEs and AVS solicit submissions. I don't ever say "Hey, please send me some email attempting to sell me shit I don't want". See the difference?

I agree there is a difference between sending to an email address that was obviously submitted somewhere and the dictionary type spams....

of course I often get flustered with large amounts of spam, but I'm so quick on the delete butto, I could give a shit less...no different than tossing Ed McMahon's envelopes in the garbage...except, I have to get up and walk away from the computer to throw that away........

Spammers make it sound like sending 1 e-mail to your address isn't a big deal.
To be honest getting 1 spam e-mail isn't a big deal, but when hundreds of different spammers have your e-mail, it can add up to alot of junk mail.
It wastes time sorting through crap e-mails from real ones.

Not to mention thousands of kids get spammed daily with porn ads.
I saw my cousin (she is 8) open an e-mail with some animal sex spam.
Just irresponsible.

Your right you can delete and move to the next e-mail. It doesn't take alot of time to clear the junk mail but kids getting porno e-mail must end somehow.

We all believe porn should be online for those interested in it, but by spamming random people - porn is being forced upon them. Not a big deal for you & me, but for kids and such its a bad thing.

you don't get enough of it yet, obviously. some of us get more than enough. like they said above, big deal, one spammer sends you a piece of spam. however, for every asshole out there like this guy who will publically ask about spam, there's hundreds more who keep quiet about it. and when each one of those fuckers is sending me one message per day, that's hundreds of messages per day.

eventually it will be so bad that if i go away on vacation, my mail program will crash or server will get full (not very likely, but due to the growing pattern, i'm sure it will happen someday...) while i'm gone. just an easy "delete and move on" situation then? no. that borders almost on a denial of service attack.
