Anybody use window tint to keep out heat at home?

The afternoon sun hits my bedroom and is BRUTAL from about 3-7PM. The AC really pumps in the summer, probably have to get it running again soon.

Thought some type of window tint may be an option to keep out some of the UV/heat rays. I've been looking around online and have found some interesting things but would love to hear from others if a tint would help much and if it saves on the electric bill at all.

Summer electric is about $250, opposed to spring electric being about $150. Anything to cut into that would be a cool additional feature of the tint.

I think MrPheer tried this? Could be wrong.

I rented a beach house several years ago that had this - it SEEMED to work. It was still hot up in the loft (which of course, was the MBR) but now that I have a house that's close to the same floor plan, I understand why. They had an entire wall of windows that faced east so it could be BRUTAL during early day in the summer.

Make sure you get something that's easily removable: saw a house getting tint taken off once and the tinting was in shreds with pieces that I'm not sure they EVER got off.

This is a local one I was looking at. I can get my 3 windows done for about $350 it looks like, but I have no idea if it would have much effect on actual heat. I don't care about the fading aspect. If it would keep the heat out and make my bedroom more comfortable, it would be worth it, energy savings would be an even better bonus.

My place is just a rental but I'd be willing to do this.

yep I got it on the windows facing the lake. makes a huge difference in the heat levels. But it really matters about the quality of your windows to decide how heavy a tint you can go. The downside is at night its so reflective you have a hard time seeing out.

But helps the temp for sure and requires less AC to keep the house cool.

Was in the tint biz for 17 years..

Yes with the right film it will provide you with a signifigant reduction on heat gain.
The 1st thing you need to consider is what type of windows you have..if they are double pane ..you have some limitations on the film options..you CANNOT put a dark automotive type film on these windows..it can cause the seal between the panes or glass the crack. It's not an effective heat reducer anyway. You have more film choices with single pane glass, but the most effective films can go on either type of window.

For max heat reduction you need a reflective film..yes any reflective film WILL reflect back on you at night with the lights on in the room..no avoiding that issue.
The best performing heat reducing film will be a 20% VLT silver reflective film...this film reduces radiated heat gain by as much as 75% in the summer and its safe for double pane glass. There are other film options, but for max heat gain effectiveness you cant beat silver in most cases.

Yes, you can buy some DIY film at most home centers, but chances are it will be a lesser quality and performance level...if you want to get max performance you can call around to local tint shops that do commercial and residential installations and ask if you can buy the film by the foot, some will sell it that way, some wont.

Best bet if its just a cpl windows you want done is to have them come out and give you an estimate..those are always free and that way you are insured to get a good install and the right film...you said its a rental so you dont want to be liable for glass breakage if you did it yourself. That could easily cost you hundreds to replace a window.

Without knowing the sizes and number of windows its hard to tell you what it will cost you...but generally it runs between $4 - 7 per square foot installed..if its a real small job they may have a minimum charge..but still should be reasonable.

I have a whole wall of windows and 2 sliding glass doors that get direct sun starting around 4 PM in the summer. I had to go the tint option (the reflective stuff mentioned above) and put some room darkening blinds on the bottom row of windows, and left the top row of windows just with the darkest tint available. I got it done from a local Tint King that specialized in the stuff for houses.

It definitely works. Cost about $1500 Canadian for a cash deal for the tint, but I have a shit load of glass. Basically the entire length of my house on one side had to be done.

One drawback is that you aren't supposed to use Windex or any glass cleaner with ammonia in it.
