blue-eyed individuals have a single, common ancestor

A team of scientists has tracked down a genetic mutation that leads to blue eyes. The mutation occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, so before then, there were no blue eyes.

I don't know about that. All the kids I've been around didn't have blue eyes to start unless that's what they actually have.

Although, this explains why most every kid has blond hair. Shit, I had platinum blond hair until I was about 5 or 6, then it started to get darker.

Now it's just gone.

if a couple who both have blue eyes have a child, the child is guaranteed to have blue eyes as well. apparantly this is the only eye color combination this happens with.

Maybe you should read the whole post before proclaiming your magnificence, we were talking about all blue eyed people coming from a common ancestor and in reading the article, they came to the conclusion that it's because of a special gene, I pointed out most all babies are born with blue eyes, they change later. My nephew was born with blue eyes, he now at 1 year old has brown eyes like his mother.

I'm a genetic match to my parents except for one thing, mother was born with blonde hair, dad with brown, I have black hair, there goes your DNA idea, if you read up on DNA, there are traits that pop up and skip generations.

Oh and matter is spelt with two t's

You missed a large part of the puzzle.

The REASON why babies have blue eyes is, and I'll quote from your own link:
Quote:
You inherit your eye color from your parents, but no matter what the color is now, it mayp have been blue when you were born. Why? Melanin, the brown pigment molecule that colors your skin, hair, and eyes, hadn't been fully deposited in the irises of your eyes or darkened by exposure to ultraviolet light.
Not ALL babies are born with blue eyes, but some of the ones born with blue eyes change to darker colors as Melanin is released.

Now here's where the link to the first article comes in, pay close attention:
Quote:
The mutation affected the so-called OCA2 gene, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to our hair, eyes and skin.

"A genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a 'switch,' which literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes," Eiberg said.
Now you understand why babies being born with blue eyes that later darken in no way disproves what these scientists have found.

What I posted was in doubt of their findings, I do believe blue eyes evolved from brown, brown eyes are more resilient to bright light, but in some parts of the world, that is not needed, so man in those areas evolved, lighter skin and lighter colored eyes and even hair. It's just evolution. People with lighter colored eyes can see better in the dark, something to do with reflective surfaces in the retina I think. But that most start with blue eyes cast doubt to me that it started with one person or one common ancestor, it more than likely happened over time to a large group of people of tribes evolving to meet the demand of their surroundings.

blonde hair is a genetic mutation as well, which is why true blondes are not as common as fake blondes.

Quote:
Based on recent genetic information carried out at three Japanese universities, the date of the genetic mutation that resulted in blond hair in Europe has been isolated to about 11,000 years ago during the last Ice Age.

Not true. My dad has brown eyes, my mom had light green eyes, my eyes are light green and sister's are blue blue. My father's parents both have brown eyes as well. Its just a combination of genetics.

not-so-breaking-news:

Every facet of our species was caused by a mutation.

That's how evolution happens.

It's also very possible (probable, even) that blue eyes existed many times in the history of our development from single-cell organisms to the present - but, perhaps unlike this more recent case, those genetic lines could have died out.

pretty interesting stuff..
there are theories that the white skinned human is also a mutation of the "original" human darker skin. some call it mutation some call it Darwin's theory of evolution.

Do you actually read that article? It says:

Quote:
but no matter what the color is now, it may have been blue when you were born
so .. its not like every one have blue eyes when born, but some may have it. Which is changed with time in most cases.

Quote:
The color is often stable by about 6 months of age. However, several factors can affect eye color, including use of certain medications and environmental factors. Some people experience changes in eye color over the course of their lives

I brought it up as a possible loop hole.

Just have to wonder how many people reading this thread knew that most kids are born with blue eyes, or how many knew that babies don't have knee caps made of bone?

Not true but it's indeed rare:

Seriously, I see this so many times. An article states something as being true while the very first sentence reads "MAY".

Bad reporting.

Walk into any nursery, look at the kids or talk to the nurse, they will tell you most all kids start off with blue eyes and they change later

The fact that most children are born with blue eyes leave doubt that man didn't always have blue eyes

think about that

Keyword here, again, is "most". A lot can happen in 6k-8k years. Especially evolutionairy wise when it comes to people. there weren't many of us back then.

I agree, what I don't agree is that it all started with one person, more like a whole tribe or several tribes in one or many area's due to evolution

I agree that is possible

I wonder how bible freaks look at this news. When you get down to it, we're one big incestuous bunch of fuck-ups according to the bible.

The bible freaks don't have a clue, the bible itself is a practice in condradictions, here's two examples that are close to this

Cursed is he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother.
- Deuteronomy 27:22

And Abraham said... She is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
- Genesis 20:11,12

-----------------------------------------
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger; her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife.
- Deuteronomy 25:5

If a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing... they shall be childless.
- Leviticus 20:21
