I think the problem is you listen to the radio and associate that with "today's music"

I have blissfully not listened to the radio in 8 years. On a side note...I picked up the new Common album today, and I'm digging it so far.

That's the same like if you said Beatles were pretty faces with an ok voice, and maybe they were and it was Brian Epstein who made them big, but who cares? Weren't they remarkable?

No I don't listen to Pearl Jam anymore, it's a closed chapter and if recording new music was banned today, there there's still enough good stuff to explore for hundreds of years if you look for good music outside of genres.

Let me get back to the fact that we're discussing the pop scene of today, what's available in media, what's on MTV, we're discussing this idiotic display of inability to put out anything original apart from more audio effects, more sweaty ebony asses or more golden chains.

It's actually quite similar to the pop scene of the 80's with all the new romance shit and crazy colours, crazy hairstyles, silly lyrics and way too much energy.
I agree. Elvis was shit.

No it's not the same as saying the Beatles were pretty faces AT ALL. Unlike Elvis, the Beatles actually wrote their own music which has more than stood the test of time. Their few years of creativity pushed pop music forward (along with Brian Wilson) into places it hadn't been before. Charisma is just another way of saying pretty boy. Elvis was just a puppet real musicians and artists fed their songs through.

What's available in the media? You mean the 10,000 music blogs? Since when has MTV EVER been a representation of good music? It's been almost 25 years since the Dead Kennedy's shouted "MTV Get off the Air!" and you're STILL pointing to it and asking why it's crap?

Here's the top 40 from the whole year of '95 the last year of "good music" according to you.

38. Cat's In The Cradle » Harry Chapin
39. Wildfire » Michael Murphy
40. I'm Not Lisa » Jessi Colter

Another fucking shitfest excepting Bowie.

The top 40 is ALWAYS at least 80-90% shit even on those rare occasions where you have a few big bands releasing good stuff at the same time. Even during a "movement" year people have a tendency to remember say, Nirvana's Nevermind and forget that Boyz 2 Men, Kriss Kross's "Jump", Right Said fred's "I'm too Sexy", Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart" all beat the shit out of it in the charts.

So once again.. it's a selection bias, remembering the good, forgetting the bad. There is always good music out there. You just can't rely on the tv to bring it to you... Just like you haven't been able to for decades so there is absolutely no point complaining because all it does is show your apathy to do anything other than be force fed (in which case you deserve the top 40) and ignorance of what is actually out there.

We're talking about pop music, the mass spread thing here - radio / tv, it's more clueless and worthless than ever. It's more idiocy than ever displayed.

actually if you dig into it a bit more, those top40 lists are interesting culturally...

1975 was a very laid back time for pop music

I showed that mass spread pop music in '75 was just as shit as 1995 and will be as shit in 2025. As far as more clueless and worthless than ever:

"He did the mash, he did the moooonster mash! The monster mash - it was a graveyard smash!"

"Ba ba ba, ba Barbara Ann, Ba ba ba, ba Barbara Ann, Barbar-aaaaaaa-aaaaa-annnn take my haaaaaa-and Barbar-aaaaaaa-aaaaa-annnn"

QED.

"Mmm Hmmm Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Here Mocca chocolata Ya Ya" in 1975 doesn't make "Drop it like it's hot, drop it like it's hot" in 2005 sound like an MIT physics lesson in comparison?

Mass consumption pop music has always and will always be able to be called "worthless and clueless". One of the first rock songs ever written was about shaking, then rattling, before finally rolling. It wasn't an epic meditation on the writings of Voltaire as they related to the French Revolution. 'twas ever thus and will forever be...

lol.
all you have to do to make it in music anymore is to get popular in the getto. Then the suburban kids will think you're cool, the girls will think you are deep and edgy. Before you know it, rich white men want you to make videos. In interviews, let them know that you are "from the streets" and you "pop caps" and "Bust in bitches faces" Invent your own language or better yet, display total ignorance of the english language and the kids will love you.

People who can't appreciate today's music are boring as fuck. There's more amazing music being produced on a daily basis than I'll ever get a chance to listen to in just about every genre you can think of. Broaden your horizons.

Some really excellent singers and melodic stuff in there, sure won't cause such a serious physical and psychical damage to an someone that's unprepaired as the 2008 stars do.

Ok, you like TLC and Boyz II Men... the conversation pretty much ends here. You can't like them and complain about the bad pop music of today. It's like a serial killer complaining about dying from cancer. 2008 is DEFINATELY no worse than TLC, Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men. I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic.

Well with TLC there's a really great bass line you are more bitter than me I guess.. the thing is, the people who make pop music should really have as an attribute at least to be able to sing well and interpret the song, god damn I love Frank Sinatra or anyone who would be able to match him, those guys were one of a hell of a singers.

Ok so we've come to a conclusion we can all agree on:

Today's pop stars can't sing, they suck on all levels, they're no more musicians or performes of music of any kind. Ten years ago they still could look at least a bit musical.

Well I'm trying to broaden my horizons every day, I have more than 1900 records and I feel myself somehow educated in jazz or stuff that's really not that easy to listen to.

List 10 examples of these days music (established after 95 ) that made it to media and is truly groundbreaking.

music of today is music from the past;
just twice its speed and half its quality ...

its ... yes, for me, it IS:
CRAP

fuck that gansta gabbing garbage ...
pure trash ... but, looking at the charts
you see how degeneration of the kids
takes place ... the less sophisticated
the music, the more they love it ... why?
becoz they fucking dont use their brains
cell phones, Ipod ... they dunno how to
climb a tree but need a cell phone by
the age of 8 already ... crippled minds ...

is that what "The Exploited" had in mind
when they recorded "Troops Of Tomorrow"?

anyways ... todays charts is a dump fulla
shit for me ...

eh, it kinda reminds me of Electric Circus. The only track i like is the Universal Mind Control, it has that old school breaker feel to it

That might be a part of the problem - cool and immediate satisfaction, less concentration and judgement than ever

Great post actually.

I mean those guys who brought Timbaland and all those audio creatures public probably know more than anyone of us about the issues and sociology of these days youth - idiocracy on the rise.

Let me show you how much you don't know. From the very same Billboard Hot 100 list you cited:

1 Beyonce - Single Ladies
Widely known as a very talented singer. Once learned and sang a song in french at the Oscars.

11 - Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
Performed "A Beautiful Mess" with a full orchestra at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert 5 days ago. Known for his rock/pop/reggae sound and vast instrument abilities.

12 Taylor Swift - Love Story
Song written by an 18 year old girl known for her amazing voice at such a young age.

15 Kevin Rudolf Featuring Lil Wayne - Let It Rock
I'm just mentioning this because Lil Wayne is the shit and this is a surprisingly catchy mix of rock and rap.

21 Rihanna - Disturbia
What a shitty voice Rihanna has... just kidding - she has a great voice. She serves as the cultural ambassador for the island of Barbados. Has amassed twelve top 40 hit singles in the U.S.

27 John Legend Featuring Andre 3000 - Green Light
Andre 3000 = amazing lyrical talent. Plays over 7 instruments. I don't even need to continue about this one.

I just skimmed the list, but there is also Secondhand Serenade, The Killers, O.A.R., Usher - all in the top 50. I'll let you research them yourself if you want their accomplishments. Hint: Usher can dance.

So after all of that - you're right - what a bunch of no-talent hacks. </sarcasm>

Well, as confirmed above, no single talent in the top 100 can change the fact that what's going on now is really just an effort to exploit more young people who never ever had a chance to hear real music or create their own style, so it's really wicked in a way.

That's actually the only way how so much visual and anti audio bullshit can happen these days.

Yes i agree with you man, but some pop stars have made it big not because of their music or vocals but because of connections in the biz or being at the right place at right time when creating their album......

Like that hasn't been happening since the inception of the music industry.

Off the top of my head:

The Gorillaz: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorillaz
Portishead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portishead
Radiohead (ok computer) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiohead
Bjork: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bjork
Tool: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_(band)
Eminem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminem

All pretty groundbreaking.

Now name your groundbreaking artists from the great era you speak of 1982-1995

I really admire Portishead, they're perfectionists and Beth Gibbons is just incredible,

Radiohead is something I admire a lot but haven't touched yet, as it really requires a certain mindset.

I have probably all the records from Björk, including some rare shit, but she started in the late 80's with that terrorist band on Iceland, how were they called - Kukl I guess, in fact the first record she ever recorded was in Iceland when she was 12.

I'm an avid fan of Tool and seen them live in 06, but they really also have their roots at the end of the 80's.

All those bands do actually.

Apart from Gorillaz which I don't know too well, I guess it's that bloke from Blur singing over there.

I'm speaking about the pre 1995 era, bands that were really coming out with their debut album and killed it.

1986 alone gave us both Reign in Blood from Slayer and Master of Puppets from Metallica.
