I think the problem is you listen to the radio and associate that with "today's music"
![]() I have blissfully not listened to the radio in 8 years. On a side note...I picked up the new Common album today, and I'm digging it so far. |

No it's not the same as saying the Beatles were pretty faces AT ALL. Unlike Elvis, the Beatles actually wrote their own music which has more than stood the test of time. Their few years of creativity pushed pop music forward (along with Brian Wilson) into places it hadn't been before. Charisma is just another way of saying pretty boy. Elvis was just a puppet real musicians and artists fed their songs through. What's available in the media? You mean the 10,000 music blogs? Since when has MTV EVER been a representation of good music? It's been almost 25 years since the Dead Kennedy's shouted "MTV Get off the Air!" and you're STILL pointing to it and asking why it's crap? Here's the top 40 from the whole year of '95 the last year of "good music" according to you. 01. Gangsta's Paradise » Coolio 02. Waterfalls » TLC 03. Creep » TLC 04. Kiss From A Rose » Seal 05. On Bended Knee » Boyz II Men 06. Another Night » Real McCoy 07. Fantasy » Mariah Carey 08. Take A Bow » Madonna 09. Don't Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days) » Monica 10. This Is How We Do It » Montell Jordan 11. I Know » Dionne Farris 12. Water Runs Dry » Boyz II Men 13. Freak Like Me » Adina Howard 14. Run-Around » Blues Traveler 15. I Can Love You Like That » All-4-One 16. Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? » Bryan Adams 17. Always » Bon Jovi 18. Boombastic / In The Summertime » Shaggy 19. Total Eclipse Of The Heart » Nicki French 20. You Gotta Be » Des'ree 21. You Are Not Alone » Michael Jackson 22. Hold My Hand » Hootie & The Blowfish 23. One More Chance-Stay With Me » Notorious B.I.G. 24. Here Comes The Hotstepper » Ini Kamoze 25. Candy Rain » Soul For Real 26. Let Her Cry » Hootie & The Blowfish 27. I Believe » Blessid Union Of Souls 28. Red Light Special » TLC 29. Runaway » Janet Jackson 30. Strong Enough » Sheryl Crow 31. Colors Of The Wind » Vanessa Williams 32. Someone To Love » Jon B. 33. Only Wanna Be With You » Hootie & The Blowfish 34. If You Love Me » Brownstone 35. In The House Of Stone And Light » Martin Page 36. I Got 5 On It » Luniz 37. Baby » Brandy 38. Run Away » Real McCoy 39. As I Lay Me Down » Sophie B. Hawkins 40. He's Mine » Mokenstef What a fucking shit fest. Here's 1975: 01. Love Will Keep Us Together » Captain & Tennille 02. Rhinestone Cowboy » Glen Campbell 03. Philadelphia Freedom » Elton John 04. Before The Next Teardrop Falls » Freddy Fender 05. My Eyes Adored You » Frankie Valli 06. Shining Star » Earth, Wind & Fire 07. Fame » David Bowie 08. Laughter In The Rain » Neil Sedaka 09. One Of These Nights » Eagles 10. Thank God I'm A Country Boy » John Denver 11. Jive Talkin' » Bee Gees 12. Best Of My Love » Eagles 13. Lovin' You » Minnie Riperton 14. Kung Fu Fighting » Carl Douglas 15. Black Water » Doobie Brothers 16. Ballroom Blitz » Sweet 17. (Hey Wont You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song » B.J. Thomas 18. He Don't Love You (Like I Love You) » Tony Orlando & Dawn 19. At Seventeen » Janis Ian 20. Pick Up The Pieces » Average White Band 21. The Hustle » Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony 22. Lady Marmalade » Labelle 23. Why Can't We Be Friends? » War 24. Love Wont Let Me Wait » Major Harris 25. Boogie On Reggae Woman » Stevie Wonder 26. Wasted Days And Wasted Nights » Freddy Fender 27. Fight The Power, Pt. 1 » Isley Brothers 28. Angie Baby » Helen Reddy 29. Jackie Blue » Ozark Mountain Daredevil 30. Fire » Ohio Players 31. Magic » Pilot 32. Please Mr. Postman » Carpenters 33. Sister Golden Hair » America 34. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds » Elton John 35. Mandy » Barry Manilow 36. Have You Never Been Mellow » Olivia Newton-John 37. Could It Be Magic » Barry Manilow 38. Cat's In The Cradle » Harry Chapin 39. Wildfire » Michael Murphy 40. I'm Not Lisa » Jessi Colter Another fucking shitfest excepting Bowie. The top 40 is ALWAYS at least 80-90% shit even on those rare occasions where you have a few big bands releasing good stuff at the same time. Even during a "movement" year people have a tendency to remember say, Nirvana's Nevermind and forget that Boyz 2 Men, Kriss Kross's "Jump", Right Said fred's "I'm too Sexy", Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart" all beat the shit out of it in the charts. So once again.. it's a selection bias, remembering the good, forgetting the bad. There is always good music out there. You just can't rely on the tv to bring it to you... Just like you haven't been able to for decades so there is absolutely no point complaining because all it does is show your apathy to do anything other than be force fed (in which case you deserve the top 40) and ignorance of what is actually out there. |

actually if you dig into it a bit more, those top40 lists are interesting culturally...
1975 was a very laid back time for pop music

"Mmm Hmmm Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Here Mocca chocolata Ya Ya" in 1975 doesn't make "Drop it like it's hot, drop it like it's hot" in 2005 sound like an MIT physics lesson in comparison?
Mass consumption pop music has always and will always be able to be called "worthless and clueless". One of the first rock songs ever written was about shaking, then rattling, before finally rolling. It wasn't an epic meditation on the writings of Voltaire as they related to the French Revolution. 'twas ever thus and will forever be... = Goddamn Dee Dee Sharp - it's all about her the bling around her neck and dancing in the clubs! Have black people in music clips learned nothing in half a century???? |

lol.
all you have to do to make it in music anymore is to get popular in the getto. Then the suburban kids will think you're cool, the girls will think you are deep and edgy. Before you know it, rich white men want you to make videos. In interviews, let them know that you are "from the streets" and you "pop caps" and "Bust in bitches faces" Invent your own language or better yet, display total ignorance of the english language and the kids will love you.

People who can't appreciate today's music are boring as fuck. There's more amazing music being produced on a daily basis than I'll ever get a chance to listen to in just about every genre you can think of. Broaden your horizons.

If I think about it twice the real problems start when we start to compare Elvis to Kanye.
Elvis to Kanye is like Enrico Caruso to a PC speaker.

Ok, you like TLC and Boyz II Men... the conversation pretty much ends here. You can't like them and complain about the bad pop music of today. It's like a serial killer complaining about dying from cancer. 2008 is DEFINATELY no worse than TLC, Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men. I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic.

Ok so we've come to a conclusion we can all agree on:
Today's pop stars can't sing, they suck on all levels, they're no more musicians or performes of music of any kind. Ten years ago they still could look at least a bit musical.

music of today is music from the past;
just twice its speed and half its quality ... its ... yes, for me, it IS: CRAP fuck that gansta gabbing garbage ... pure trash ... but, looking at the charts you see how degeneration of the kids takes place ... the less sophisticated the music, the more they love it ... why? becoz they fucking dont use their brains ![]() cell phones, Ipod ... they dunno how to climb a tree but need a cell phone by the age of 8 already ... crippled minds ... is that what "The Exploited" had in mind when they recorded "Troops Of Tomorrow"? anyways ... todays charts is a dump fulla shit for me ...

I mean those guys who brought Timbaland and all those audio creatures public probably know more than anyone of us about the issues and sociology of these days youth - idiocracy on the rise.

1 Beyonce - Single Ladies Widely known as a very talented singer. Once learned and sang a song in french at the Oscars. 11 - Jason Mraz - I'm Yours Performed "A Beautiful Mess" with a full orchestra at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert 5 days ago. Known for his rock/pop/reggae sound and vast instrument abilities. 12 Taylor Swift - Love Story Song written by an 18 year old girl known for her amazing voice at such a young age. 15 Kevin Rudolf Featuring Lil Wayne - Let It Rock I'm just mentioning this because Lil Wayne is the shit and this is a surprisingly catchy mix of rock and rap. 21 Rihanna - Disturbia What a shitty voice Rihanna has... just kidding - she has a great voice. She serves as the cultural ambassador for the island of Barbados. Has amassed twelve top 40 hit singles in the U.S. 27 John Legend Featuring Andre 3000 - Green Light Andre 3000 = amazing lyrical talent. Plays over 7 instruments. I don't even need to continue about this one. I just skimmed the list, but there is also Secondhand Serenade, The Killers, O.A.R., Usher - all in the top 50. I'll let you research them yourself if you want their accomplishments. Hint: Usher can dance. So after all of that - you're right - what a bunch of no-talent hacks. </sarcasm> |

Yes i agree with you man, but some pop stars have made it big not because of their music or vocals but because of connections in the biz or being at the right place at right time when creating their album......

Radiohead is something I admire a lot but haven't touched yet, as it really requires a certain mindset. I have probably all the records from Björk, including some rare shit, but she started in the late 80's with that terrorist band on Iceland, how were they called - Kukl I guess, in fact the first record she ever recorded was in Iceland when she was 12. I'm an avid fan of Tool and seen them live in 06, but they really also have their roots at the end of the 80's. All those bands do actually. Apart from Gorillaz which I don't know too well, I guess it's that bloke from Blur singing over there. I'm speaking about the pre 1995 era, bands that were really coming out with their debut album and killed it.
