macs are really really great but they're just plain expensive.

PC's are great too but a lot cheaper so I use PCs, I'm not a designer anyway so I dont have a real need for a good graphics oriented computer.

I switched to mac a couple years ago and I haven't looked back. More productive and I love having a *nix command line under it all.

About 2 months ago I switched from a Dell laptop running XP to the new macbook pro and I couldn't be happier. There was a bit of a learning curve for me because I'm a huge fan of keyboard shortcuts and had to relearn them (I could have cheated and remapped everything but I didn't want to go down that path).

I've always hated laptop touchpads (always carried a small USB travel mouse) but the touchpad on the macbook rocks!

Being a Linux geek at heart, I also love the fact that OSX is built on BSD so I can have native terminals without having to resort to cygwin or some other Windows linux emulator.

What I don't understand is why this "macs are good for graphics" thing has been shoved down our collective throats for years. They don't realize that much of, if not most of, what you see graphically in this world -- everything from a label on a food container to Hollywood CGI is done on a PC.

Doesn't mean PC's are better, because they're not, but they run the fucking world -- get used to it.

Yes, PC's have "graphics". It's funny that everyone automatically thinks you have to have a MAC to be creative. I've been an artist all of my life, professionally for the last 15 years. I've used both, but ended up on a PC, because the equipment costs less, and I can usually customize myself.

Macs are for : dumb females, idiots that got suckered into the marketing of overpriced/shit OS/unsupported in many ways/cannot play many games, wannabe hipsters, "that guys brother", 30% of the worlds designers (art industry), and people on hbo.

Macs suck. It's all presentation. People that don't like PC's have either been suckered into the cult of Apple or they are too dumb to not download toolbars, and crap. I mean, run a fucking virus scanner every week, fragment the hard drive, shut down properley, etc, it's not hard. Would you ride a bicycle down the street with a busted tire and wonder why it wasn't performing up to standard?

I think most the mac haters are the same guys that go into an apple store and drool all over them, sadly they can't afford a real computer, so they hate on them all the time to make themselves feel better

it's okay guys, I was there once too.

The question should be Windows XP, Windows Vista, or OSX since Macs ARE PCs

I voted PC since it works just fine.

A lot of people seem to think that the Mac Platform is good only for graphics, music, or video, basically creative professionals. Macs have MANY uses for business and your life. It allows one computer to be used to manage your world all on one efficient platform. You can see some of the real world applications here: http://www.apple.com/business/

WTF you're talking about ? I do ALL my programming on the Mac (BBedit is great BTW)

If you do real propgramming (I mean hardcoding), the Mac is Just perfect... If you mean using a "programmer in a box" that runs on PC is programming, then you're just wrong

My G5 is going on 3 years, runs 24/7 I have never run a virus scanner or defrag. It has never needed repair.
About once a year I run Apples Disk Utility to correct some file permissions.

Actually it's a very stupid question because... Mac IS PC. Yeah it was a different hardware platform some years ago but now all modern Mac's with Intel CPU's and standard Intel chipset's made in China are just usual clones of IBM PC. Is there any one who didn't know that? There is no difference between Mac's or PC's annymore. It's possible to run Windows on a Mac, as well as it possible to run Mac OS X on a "regular" PC.

Yeah, that part is true, sorta...
I've done both..and let me tell ya...

Installing 2 flavors of windows on my mac was a breeze and both ran great.
When I boot my Mac, I'm given a choice of Vista, XP, Ubuntu or OSX. ( All with very nice graphics I might add )

Installing OSX on my PC was a fucking pain in the ass.. and barely ran properly.
When I boot my PC, it hangs and crashes and then maybe boots into the operating system I prefer, but most times goes to windows regardless of what I want it to do. ( the menu to choose if it happens to come up, is a black 8bit text menu lol )

Anyone that thinks you can run OSX on a PC and have it work like it will on an "apple built" mac is just wrong.

And let's kill this "macs are more expensive" bullshit.. cause it's false.
Go build yourself a comparable PC with Wireless, bluetooth, 20"+ high quality monitor, firewire 400 and 800, IR remote control, Webcam etc etc... same quality boards and HDD's and check the prices Mac < PC. ( they do fuck you on ram however, but those of us with brains by that elsewhere )

This is what I ALWAYS do. All my computers were assembled by myself, so I have there ONLY those components I really need. I.e. I don't have a remote IR control or a Webam (yes, I sell cam models, but I don't pose on cams myself ). So my computers are not Macs and are not PC's. They are just some other sort of IBM clones. Let's call them CXXXC (CyberXXX Computer ).

Now let me say about the price. Of course my CXXXC's are about 2 times cheaper than other IBM clones known as Macs and PC's. I don't have any unnecessary shit there, but those componets I have are 100% best ones for my needs. Both Windows and Mac OS X can be easy installed and run just fine on my self-assembled CXXXC's

So is there any reason to buy expensive Mac which is just the same clone of IBM like my CXXXC, has lots of unuseful hardware inside and lacks of very important (I mean important to mee) components? Please give me at least one reason to by one of those expensive made-in-china Intel-powered Macs, Compaq's, Sony's etc.

I have an HP I loaded OSX on. It took some time to get it installed properly, but now that it is...there isn't any difference. It's a retail Leopard install, and even get's software updates from Apple.

Cost under $700 and is quite a bit speedier than the Macpro Desktop I paid more 4 times as much for.

That happened because both your computers have the same hardware inside (CPU, chipset, memory, HDD and other parts made in China). Why one comuter with a bitten apple on its label should work fater or better than the same computer labeled with "HP"? No really, is there any one who still believe in Santa and Apple magic?

I used a mac for 6 months this year at work and I could never get used to the way things are organized on the mac. For me, things make much more sense on Linux or Windows.

Don't get me wrong, OS X looks great and I love expose, but I get much more work done on XP than on OS X.
And I never get viruses or spyware because I actually now how to use my computer. I haven't had to reformat in ages.

Plus, I can actually choose what hardware goes in my PC.

I love my Mac, and have never owned a PC, my current widescreen imac is my 5th computer. Come to think of it, my first mac was an old 9500, 266mhz. Damn, how things have changed.

True, but OSX is a unix based operating system, Microsoft, of course is DOS. I do also think that the CPU pipes different on each motherboards.

Windows hasn't been based on DOS since Windows ME.

Not exactlty. Mac OS X is really just a legal rip of Free BSD (yes, it's a Unix system). But as about Windows so there are 2 absolutely different branches of it:
1) MS-DOS based one:
Windows 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, Me

2) NT-based ones:
Windows NT 3, NT 4, 2000, XP, Vista

I don't think you are using Win95/98/Me, so forget about MS-DOS. Windows NT is not compatible with MS-DOS at all (you can run MS-DOS applications via built-in virtual DOS machine only).

And about CPU's, sorry to tell you the truth, but you are wrong. They are absolutely identical on all IBM PC clones including the Intel-based Mac's. The only difference is label at the top of the box

Absoultely correct. I'd even say it wasn't based on DOS even before Me, because NT 3 and NT 4 are older than Windows Me
