:mad Dam, going onto my third Xbox360 RROD!

Playing COD4 last night and the screen just froze up. I turned off the box then turned it back on only to see the dreaded RROD! Tried all the tech recommendations, but nothing. Now I have to send it AGAIN. Third time this happens to me. Thank god for the extended warranty!

I got the RROD last night. This will be the 2nd send in for me. At least it's a free fix, including shipping.

It was the recent XBox live update. I just lost my first XBox yesterday. I'm sending it in on the 3 year warranty M$ offered and buying a PS3 in the meantime.

The RROD only affects the first release of the XBOX 360 and Microsoft will replace your box (or at least the insides) if you have this problem.

Microsoft has announced that anyone who had to pay to get their system fixed that had the rrod is getting a refund as well as that all systems have a 3 year ?enhanced? warranty that covers 3 years from the manufactured date (which means it covers used systems too). So some could say that Microsoft covered their butt to make sure no more lawsuits would continue but we think it?s more about admitting they made a hardware mistake that they thought was fine and showing that they will pay the price (and shipping) to get it fixed in a timely manner.

The basic process of getting the system repaired is:
  1. Call Microsoft?s Xbox Trouble line (toll free at 800 4my xbox)
  2. Inform them you have ?three flashing lights in the 1, 2, and 3 quadrants? and it doesn?t turn on
  3. Get the tracking number for your box
  4. Receive from UPS the box they want you to ship it in the next day
  5. Before you ship it, write down your serial number then remove hard drive and/or memory card and keep them
  6. Ship it back via prepaid UPS (free for you) and go to www.xbox.com to track your system?s progress
  7. After 1 week you?ll get a 360 back in working condition
  8. Do a happy dance that you didn?t pay a thing for your system to be fixed except patience

In newer models, Microsoft did re-manufactured the motherboard so it wouldn?t warp under prolonged heat and also fixed the solders to make sure that they didn?t cause the hair-line fracture. They also improved the ?heat sink? of the 360 to make sure the GPU and the CPU both had more attention paid on them to keep them cool. These ?revamped? systems can be identified simply by looking for the HDMI port located underneath the standard AV output jack on the back of the system. You can also look on the box to see if it says Zephyr on it which is the code name they used when re-manufacturing the motherboard.

I know you only copy/pasted but this couldn't be further from the truth. Even units with build dates in Mid 2008 are getting RROD.

That said, with about 10 worth of shit from Radio Shack and 30 minutes of your time, you can fix the RROD on your own.

Lots of tutorials and walkthroughs out there.

There are different variations of the Red Rings. The blinking 3 rings is the actual RROD. If you actually get that, you aren't booting up.

Maybe a few years back, but this theory has been proven to be wrong more than a few times over.

yeah then explain why an XBOX 360 I have had for all of 14 months which was built in Oct 2007 just got the RROD. This a model that supposedly got the new motherboards. I don't hnk it's a coincidence that all these dead XBOX 360 have happened since they released an update a few days ago,.

I'll be sending it in tomorrow. I would like to know how long I am going to have to wait to get it back. I told my son if it fucks up again we'll be getting a PS3. Hell we have a PS2( since been given to a family member ) from 2002( it's the old bulky kind and not even one of those with the built in network adpater, so it's fucking old ) that's been used and abused and still fucking works and the fucking 360 dies after 14 months.

If all 4 lights are red that means there's on issue with your video conenection or your power adpater. That's not the actual RROD which is 3 lights.

yeah I don't get these people on their 3rd 4th adn 5th 360s? WTF it's obvious at that point they are junk. We have one because that's what my son wanted despite me trying to convince him to get a PS3. It's been fine until now. Games look the same as the PS3( for now, in 2 years probably not ), but as I said if it breaks again that's it. I don't care if the repair is free. I'm not sure how some peole think the XBOX 360 is CHEAPER if they actually have to go out and buy 2, 3, 4 or 5 of them. For that money you can build a hell of a gaming PC.

Yeah, and void any type of warranty you have in case something else goes wrong. Unless you truly need your 360 that you can't wait a month or something for them to fix it, FOR FREE, and not void out any warranty you have, then fine go ahead, but I'm not that dependent on my 360 where I'm so impatient that I have to open it up and fuck it up myself even more trying to fix it.

You do know consoles now days are pretty much PC's with controllers instead of keyboards and mouses right? In fact, a 360 can actually have both of those hooked up to it and used. So your argument is moot.

Might want to check and listen to your fans and stuff, we bought a used 360 package (We knew the system had a problem, but a half working system, 15 games including GOW, GH, and a couple others for $75 was a damn good deal) off a kid that had the same problem, it's just the fans not working properly so the system is heating up and shutting itself down or freezing forcing you to shut it down so it can cool down.

I'm on 360 number 2, but it's not bad, as the first one was struck by lightning 2 weeks after I got it, and still had warranty with the store I got it at, so all I did was take it back and get a new one from them.

Everyone I know who's had one fail, has had it fail out side of the warranty period. The cost to send it back to Microsoft to be fixed is over $100 and could take up to 3 weeks of your time.

Seems like a pretty simple solution to crack it open, grab some shit from Radio Shack, and take 30 minutes to do it yourself.

It's not difficult. I've done a bunch of them. I've got a pile of what were once broken units sitting here waiting for new homes.

Check craigslist, you can probably find someone locally who will do it cheap. I've seen someone local to me doing it for a little as $25 and he'll let you wait and play games on his system.

Mine is 14 months old( actually made in Oct 2007 ). I went online and requested a repair and I got it free because it was RROD( 3 red lights ). Unless your 360 is very new( then it's covered under the 1 year warranty ) most of them are covered for the RROD for 3 years.

And be stuck with a broken 360 and no warranty if you screw up. There are people in every city on craigslist that will fix it for like $40 though.

I will be heading to my 3rd 360.. It gets the RROD every 5 times I turn it on so I will have to call the 1 800 # and have them sent me a box so I can mail them my 360 and get a new one. Warranty for the rrod is good for another 2 years.

In the case of this fix, you can't fuck it up. It's really an easy process. The hardest part is actually getting the XBox apart. Once you've done a few, you can pop them open in under a minute and complete the fix in about 30 minutes or so of your time.

You can find broken units for $25 if you know where to look. I can turn them back into working machines with very little investment. Most I assume are working, because I sold them with a guarantee and not a single one came back.

That's a different error all together. But yeah...unless you do it yourself, it's going back to Microsoft.

It's not a difficult fix either.

It's not difficult. I've done a bunch of them. I've got a pile of what were once broken units sitting here waiting for new homes.
And the RROD warranty is for 3 years, As long as my system is in the warranty, I'm not fucking with anything, I'll let them do it. If it happens outside of the warranty, then fine, I had a good 3 years with no problems, I'll pay the $30 to have the fix done by someone else, and give it to my 7 year old nephew so he has a system, then cough up another $200 for a brand new one again.

it's no different since he got the rrod which is a hardware failure which has a 3 years warranty. Fix it yourself and you void any warranty that you may have had.

link to your proof? I searched google, read a few pages, no one seems to share your opinion.

Oh, you can load mouse drivers on an xbox 360? Well that's awesome, now you can enjoy the full 3200dpi of laser goodness also! Oh wait... no you can't.

Are there any fps games that allow 360 or ps3 users to play against pc users in the same server?

ya, I heard many horror story, but when I got my box from them, shipped my 360 to them I got a new one in less then 1 week in a half. My brother did the same, but he sent it near xmas, but he got a new one back 3 days after he sent his fucked up one in. I can guarantee that when I send mine in a couple days I won't have to wait long to get a new one.

With the new Xbox update you can install the game on the hard drive. I think that takes a big load off the DVD drive and might help prolong the life of it.
