***NatNet Review...........................

I've been using natnet for close to three months now. So far they've pretty much lived up to all the hype you hear around here. Which is a little shocking to me considering all the problems I've had with other hosts I've used.

1. Support
I'm sure everyone has heard this before but their support is beyond great. They've responded to my tickets(I've made several) within 5 minutes every single time, usually one minute. They take the time to read what you say to help you. Some other host have decent support but they always seem rushed. Hell I've even talked to some host that had sales people rushed, well when I talked to them anyway *cough* webair *cough*.

There's another well known host around here I've used that everyone claimed had great support. After using them for a couple months it turned out they had their own php config and didn't set up cpanels. Well my scripts were detecting cpanel config as the default because it was there I guess. So these guys wouldn't even fix it so my scripts worked. They wanted me to magically make the scripts work with their php config. I know that problem would be easy to fix now but back then it wasn't something you could do in whm/cpanel.

2. Getting moved
I run several sites on my server and have plenty of scripts installed. I was amazed how fast natnet got my sites moved. They moved over 50+ sites of mine with scripts installed in about 24 hours. Not only that but I'm picky about how my sites are organized but they still did it right.

3. Email
Natnet uses their own servers for your email. This is great if you don't want to setup a ssl certificate on your site. You'll be able to connect without any warnings. The only downside is you can't use spamassassin or other server mail filters.

4. Uptime
So far I haven't had any problems. Hopefully it stays that way.

5. Server response
The server response time is awesome. Some host have horrible pings and response time on their servers/networks. Using http://host-tracker.com which hits your site from around the globe my server gets a average response time of 0.55s.

6. Security
I was a bit worried at first. I figured they'd just set everything up like most host do and you'd have to handle the security. I usually do a lot crap on a new server when it comes to security. Such as enabling SSH and other stuff to work with my IP only, installing logwatch etc. It can be a pain setting all that up and it takes time. But natnet has the security covered for you.

7. Installs
This could go along with support but they install anything you want and do it right. Need ffmpeg or any other server stuff installed on your server? Just ask they'll do it and usually very fast.

8. No Control Panel
Some people see this as a bad thing. But there's actually a plus side to it. If you check some of the big control panel sites you'll see they aren't always secure. Usually there's articles saying this option/script enabled by default has holes it, etc etc. It's pretty common or at least the last time I checked. I don't want to check their site every day to see if there's security holes and worry about finding the solution.


9. Prices
The prices aren't so great when compared to a lot of other host unless you get in on a special. But considering what you're getting (great managed service) it really is worth it. You'll also have to sign a one year contract which isn't a big deal but I prefer month to month.

I completely forgot about the backups. I'm guessing they could setup another drive for raid, I never asked. But they automagically started backing up my data every Tuesday. According to their site it looks like it's kept on whole different server. I can't recall one host that gives you a backup like that included in the hosting plan.

So, I am working on some stuff for a client and I blow away a table by accident (shit happens you know).

I get with the client and let them know that hey I just fucked up can you see if NatNet has a recent backup they can throw up there.

A few minutes later my client emails me back with the NatNet phone number so that I can go tech to tech.

So, I call the number and I talk to Matt and he checks the backups and lets me know what they have. He starts up the restore and tells me he will call me back when it is all done.

About 5 mnutes later the fucking phone rings and it's Matt telling me that it's all done.

I am like what the fuck? They answered the phone? They didn't need a support ticket from me but instead did that part from their end and they had the restore done that quickly?

What is the world coming to when you actually get support from a support department?????????

They are ruining my view of hosts..... dammit

Thanks for all of the kind words everyone....it really makes me feel like what we are doing is working. Sometimes to us it seems that the only thing people care about is whoever is the cheapest and we spend our lives trying to tell people that if they will just pay a little bit more they can have the best!!

As for the people asking about the contracts....trust me when I tell you that I HATE them too! When we first started NationalNet most of the hosts that post here now were not even in business yet and every other host had mandatory contracts so we came out and said "we don't require contracts...we want to earn your business every single day". Well then we outgrew that business model and started having to deal with bankers and accountants and attorneys who have pushed us away from the philosophy. So, we now have to deal with agreements....as much as we hate it. In our defense, however, out of all of the customers who have ever screwed me out of money...and there have been many.....if you count all of them that we sued you will come up with a grand total of NONE. We don't have to force people to stay with us....they stay because they want to ;)

Their support is by far top notch.

Now for those that don't know, before I started ConsumptionJunction.com I worked in the hosting industry. I know my stuff. Also it makes me one of the biggest pain in the ass customers possible! Heh.

Tony and Bill have taken such FUCKING GREAT CARE OF US I couldn't lump enough praise on them. Yeah, every year I look around, do my due diligence, get quotes from other top-tier providers. Generally I wind up getting pricing around 20% lower than NatNet. FUCK THAT. I'm not leaving a host that's NEVER let me down just to save 20%. Host with NatNet, work with them, help them understand your setup AND your business model, and FORGET about hosting. They take care of it! Done.

Seriously, after we sold off CJ and ramped up MadisonAvenue.com we grew to the point where a master-slave SQL database solution just couldn't hold up to what we were trying to push through it. NatNet, designed, built, & implemented a Clustered SQL solution for us when the technology was brand spanking new. Total Additional Charge: $0.00. NOW THAT is service.

I've been doing this for about 13 yrs now, and I've been thru a lot of hosts. I started with natnet a couple years ago and as long as they're in business I will never leave. They're just on a whole other level from any other hosting company I've ever dealt with. We're in the process of putting 14 more servers there right now.

My goal is to get my own projects working with the same level of competence and professionalism as Natnet does. I have been inspired
