Editing pros - problem with Vegas - any ideas? - GoFuckYourself.com

I have a number of fairly short avis that I'm trying to join together and edit into a wmv in Vegas.
Some of the avis have audio, some don't.
When I load the avis into Vegas, though, no .sfk files are created, and the entire edited wmv file has no audio.
Is it possible that the program may be "auto-defaulting" to "no audio" because some of the clips are silent? (I can't imagine that's the problem - since it isn't creating .sfk files for the clips with audio, either).

Thanks for any help anyone can come up with

(I'm using Vegas 6.0 if that matters)

ok it shouldnt matter if some do and some dont have audio vegas should render it normal

question is try loading one file only and rendering, gotta figure out whats up

other option is

try converting all files to same format

never had this issue

I have had some problems with avi files in vegas. In my case it had something to do with divx codecs. It worked on a friends vista box , but on xp I couldnt get it to work, no matter what codes I installed. In my case I had two options, either use vista or convert the avi files to wmv on my linux box with FFmpeg and then load them in vegas. I am not 100% sure you have the same problem, but it could be.

I suspect this is likely a codec problem. Go to Download.com and install the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, and see if that fixes your problem. Also, you'll want to upgrade to Vegas 9.

Vegas 9 is more stable and fixed a number of rendering problems I was having with previous versions.

As far as your audio problem, have you taken a look at the audio track to make sure it's being added to the timeline?

yeah convert the files one at a time, but mostly likley reinstall vegas. shit happens

when i capture video to vegas 7, it doesn't generate sfk's until i save the project, close the program & re-open the project. as the program boots, then it generates the sfks. not sure that this will help you, but GL.

Me either. Same thing when I load one file (with audio) - it doesn't create the .sfk file and there's no audio created.

Thanks, I'm thinking more and more "codec" - and the conversion idea isn't a bad one - I think I was so focused on "fixing" the problem that I didn't bother going in another direction.

Yes I have - and it's not (thought I had said that in the original post, sorry) - it's not creating the .sfk files and that's when the audio is added to the timeline. I'm no guru when it comes to which codecs to install - so thanks for the suggestion on K-Lite. And yeah, I may have to think about upgrading (I'm one of those people who once they get comfortable with a program, doesn't want to change lol - I still don't have anything running Vista, just XP - and I was heartbroken when my last Win98 machine went belly-up earlier this year lol - it was old, but very comfortable to work with

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think 7 works differently than 6 - 6 generates the sfk's as soon as you import the file, before you start working with it.

first avi isnt a codec its a container. sounds like your avi files are actually divx run em through Gspot and find out what they are...thats where you satrt

second NEVER install the klite codec pack thats just asking for problems with conflicts instead find the codec you need and install that

if you still have problems post what gspot says the codec is and what version of Vegas you are running...

The codec is DVC/DV (dvsd) and Gspot says it's installed.
The audio codec is MPEG-1 layer 2 and Gspot says it's installed.
(For the avis without audio, there's no audio codec shown.)
Vegas is version 6.
If Gspot says the codecs are already installed - where would I go from there?

ok its been a while since I worked with 6 so bear with me

first thing I would do is import a video file that has audio and drag it to the time line

it should show your audio track, next import a video with no audio and drag it to the time line as a new video track, dont append it to the end on the first video track it should be a new track...you should have video but no audio....continue doing this

you may want to check the properties of the project and make sure that audio is set appropriatly

you should be able to render to whatever....your tracks with no audio wont have audio in the finished renders but the ones with audio should be fine

If vegas for some reason doesnt like this you can always add a filler audio track back dragging in an audio file and making the volume 0 on it

if it doesnt show an audio track on a video that has audio you are going to have to resport to ffdshow and or Haali media splitter or something similar to separate the tracks...gspot is never wrong about the info to my knowledge but the audio and video may be interleaved in a way that vegas cannot seperate them

Thanks, but that's not the problem - some of the clips have audio, some don't ---- the only clips that it's showing no audio codec for don't have audio on them.
But even when I load the avis WITH audio into Vegas 6, it doesn't create the .sfk and there's no audio on the timeline - even though GSpot shows that the codec is installed.
(Gspot does show that the audio is split across the interleaves, if that matters)

yup thats the problem teh audio is interleaved in a which vegas 6 doesnt know how to decode

so what you want to do in this case is save it in a way that vegas can understand it.

if you have quicktime pro or even windows movie maker you might be able to load it and resave it as a dv avi file, if so bbe sure you save it as progressive (non interlaced) you shouldnt lose any quality but vegas 6 may be able to read the newly saved file format

i dont even remember 6.0. i use 8.0c. my only suggestion is to append the avi's and then render. or render each avi out individually and then butt them back to back and render it out as a wmv.
