Police: "We dont have time..."

Wow, right now words can not express my thoughts after I just got off the phone with the local Florida police department.

This guy has been trying to scam me for $2400 bucks. Tells me that he is near where I live (thinking I live somewhere else in NJ because I responded to an ad on CL) then says "oh, I'm in Florida for business this month."

He tells me that he wants a money order sent, so I tell him I will, then he gives me a fake USPS tracking number (I confirmed with USPS as well saw people posting the same message Yahoo questions). He now tells me that he demands that I call the local bank to have the cash available for him to pick up. I play along with his game and tell him I will message him back.

Meanwhile, he has no bank account, no drivers license, nothing. Says he needs the cash to be there and for me to give them a secret pass code to know its him

So I call to the local police and tell them what is happening. I said anyone who isnt internet savvey would of probably fell for this, can you help clean off one more scammer off the street. Instead this is their response:
police: just call your local police, we don't have time to deal with stuff like this, we have bigger crimes going on.

me: he is trying to steal $2,400 from me, there is nothing you can do?
(meanwhile, they didn't even ask if i really sent the cashiers check or not)

police: you should use better judgment when buying things online. call your bank and tell them not to allow him to take any funds, there is nothing we can do.

me: so I just want to make sure. i have the guys email address, convos, phone number (prepaid cell) and i found out what computer cafe he is at doing this though his IP address and there is nothing you will do

police: correct sir, like i said we dont have time to deal with something like this. in the future please be more cautious. you can file a report but there is nothing we can really do past that.
FUCKING WOW! no wonder why there are so many scammers, they know they probably have no chance of being caught with the police

Anyone near Miami want to go punch this guy in the balls for me?

Internet fraud is not something that your local police department would handle. That would be for the FBI.

Actually, some cities police departments have an Internet Crime Division. I know my city does and we are not as big as Miami.

Like Bad Dog said, many police stations have a department that handles financial crimes. Maybe go to the next biggest department, like your county?

You may also try the Florida Attorney General's office. They would be the one that would ultimately press charges against him anyway.

I don't know why the FBI wouldn't take this...sounds like an Interstate crime to me...that's what they handle!

I wouldn't image that money orders are treated like currency by the government or you could try the Secret Service as that is right up their alley. Their two responsibilities are money and protecting important people.

Police are to busy catching working men coming home from work who can AFFORD to pay tickets, do you really think they would waste their time with a scammer who probably has no money in the firstplace?

think about it.

Honestly it comes down to money.. The less money they have, the less divisions they have. So you end up with a homicide cop trying to work Internet fraud.. You think they like it?? Last week it was most likely their mom that got ripped off.

The local cops here in my town are all under investigation from the Chief down for:

1. covering up an auto accident caused by one of their officers who was drinking at a local bar (while on duty and in uniform). He hit someone and took off from the scene. Turns out he was drunk and had been snorting a few grams of coke.

2. Covering up for another officer who was stopping women and telling them that he'd let them out of their ticket if they'd have sex with him. He was stalking two women on top of this and his fellow officers were helping to cover it up.

The officer who caused the accident and Officer Stalker were both tried and are now locked up. The investigation into the others is still on going, but everyone including the Chief have been suspended without pay. They were busted shredding documents, Enron style as well.

not entirely true. in college someone about 10 miles away tried to get a car loan in my name. the chevy dealership called me to tell me they could not verify my income... i thought it was a joke and they gave me the credit app. took it to the police and they did NOTHING!

Hearing the stories come out in the course of the various investigations have been funny, but totally sickening at the same time.

PS. The coke here sucks, so it is possible to snort a few grams yourself and not be dead

Maybe you are misinformed about what the police are actually here for?

They are NOT there to protect you, your money, your safety or your well being. They are there to systematically protect the people "on the whole" as an auxiliary backup system to "The People".

Police Have No Duty To Protect Individuals
