I have to laugh at some of these comments. Some of you think waiters and waitresses are to dumb to do anything else. Many people think the exact same thing about people that work in the adult industry.

i just know in the state i am in they do not earn 3 something an hour plus tips. they earn state minimum wage of 8.50 an hour plus tips. i do not feel bad for anyone earning same minimum wage as everyone else plus tips on top which others typically do not get. i could understand it some if they got just the federal wage but they do not. also in my state they can not make them tip out or pay the place part of their tips like in some states.
i tip still and in my state i feel tips are 100% optional as i know they get full wages. if i am back east or in mid west i understand they may live off of tips more and may have to tip put as well so i count on it costing a bit more to go out. either way fuck em for bad service and if they confronted me double fuck them.

I tip 10% on large bills and more on smaller ones. I don't see the point in tipping 20% or more.

In my state, if you make tips they employer is allowed to pay you below minimum wage. I think it's around 5 bucks if you're a waitress.

for me it all depends... if im at a bar and order a round of 10 shots at $5/each i'll tip $5 wtf its not like u had to go to the bar 10 times.. if its a bar they know me at and i order 10 at the bar get charged for 5 i tip $20 or something

for just a dinner 10-20%+ depending on the type of place if you serve shitty food at applebees dont expect to ever make 20% on everyone... go get a job a place a little more upscale work 1/2 as much and make the same or more

really bad service always $0.01 tip i learned this from my pops and i think it definitely sends a message

Been over to the US around 6 times the past 10 years, and first couple were a real shock with the tipping thing. Remember being in a bar and having a few drinks with mates, and the bar girl refused to serve us anymore beers because we owed around $50 in tips apparently ... was the strangest shit I ever saw. Point blank refused to sell us anymore drinks.

She was a bitch about it too, we had no idea tips were needed in bars. So we just picked up and went to another bar ... spent hundreds that night that the first place could have seen.

I did get used to it over there and will leave a tip. Though its still a very strange system ... why don't you just pay reasonable wages and put it into the price of the meal? Very odd way of doing things ... guilting customers into supplementing wages.

Wow 20% tip. I never do that here in The Netherlands. However, wwhen I goto the USa/France I do pay more tip than here So they won't vall me a cheap ass.

Anyway when someone ask for a bigger tip, and the money is still on the table, I would take my money and not tip at all.

Fuck them.

With 20% tip, waitresses make nice money don't they?

I mean average diner 2 persons is around 100USD, so they get 20USD, around 20 diners in an evening makes them 400USD a day.

Or?

Do they get a base salary as well?

Yeah New Zealand has probably some of the best service of any western country I have been to. Australia is absolutely crap in comparison, service overall is utterly terrible even though both countries are very similar, but the NZers appreciate the business and tipping them gives the hugest shock.

what happened for the most part is that people in many professions/jobs made so much in tips that employers adjust salaries down. supply and demand. if people can make 100.00 - 200.00 - 300.00 a night doing something, then there is no reason to pay 20.00 an hour to attract great people to do an unskilled job. an effect of this is that people are essentially working for tips and when you hire and train shitty people, you have this problem of people not quite understanding why you're not throwing 20.00 bills at them non stop.

then, because we are a planet full of lazy idiots, many start thinking they are entitled to a tip regardless of how they treat you or how the experience was.

i FUCKING HATE it when people start ranting about tips being necessary. if you don't like a job.. get a new fucking job that pays more money. THATS WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING IN LIFE... MOVING UP... not demanding that the world subsidize your stupidity, lazyness, lack of motivation and refusal to better yourself.

I tip quite well but not always. Depends on the service. They are already getting an hourly wage and are doing what they are required to do in order to keep their job. But yes, if the service is good then I will tip. If the service is not so good, I will not tip.......And if they ASK for a tip? Wow, that's pretty lame.

california, oregon, washington, nevada, and montana are all full state minimum wage with no required tip outs allowed. then in hawaii it is guarenteed 96.6% of full state wage. you have to go east for lower minimum wages and more east you go the lower the guarenteed wages are and the higher the forced tip outs get.

I only had one incident in a restaurant where a waiter came up to me afterwards and asked me why the tip was so low (20%). I was super embarassed and ended up tipping another 10%. I know i'm a silly canadian that is too polite...

Needless to say I felt like an ass and should never have given the guy the 20% to begin with after that.

I cannot recall that ever happening to me.

Although I do think 20% is the new 15% unless you have sub par service.

I am not above leaving two pennies on the table to send the secret shitty service message. I have a waiter friend who bitched about a cheap tipper only giving him two cents and I had to inform him that he is a fucking dumb ass.

Except for larger parties, I *hate* when the tip is included. I do not think they should include an automatic tip for anything less than 6 diners. Then, if they do decide to insult me with that shit, unless it was excellent service, I WILL NOT go over whatever they include on my check. It is MY job to determine what the tip is.

Now, since I tip 20% standard unless proving a point, if anybody got 15% from me and said something about it, I'd tell them that 20% is my standard tip so they need to analyze their service.

One big pet peeve for me ... never let my drink glass go empty. Do it once and I see that you're busy ... cool ... do it twice and you've fucked yourself.

I had a similar thing happen to me. The bill was 49 bucks and some change and i added 12 dollar tip. I paid by debit card. Waiter came back and asked why I tipped so poorly. I was both embarrassed and mad, so I asked to see the manager and had the tip credited back to my debit card.

I tip very well unless someone absolutely sucked.. but I have never had anyone actually come out and ASK for a tip, WOW how rude, I would prob ask to see the manager and complain if that happened!

If it's a bartender and we are going to be drinking all nite, the 1st tip I give is always great so me andmy friends get grat service the rest of the nite no matter how full the bar is.

The only place I don't tip and it confuses KB and I both is the Pacific Whey, does anybody else in Cali eat at this place? When you step up to the counter and put in your order and pay w credit card, the receipt you have to sign has a space for "tip" even though all they do is ring your order and sometimes carry it out to your table, they don't serve you at all. So we just draw a line thru the "tip" spot and pay whatever it costs.. Then they also have a TIP JAR there at the register.. wtf?! But I always wonder if anybody actually tips them?

When you step up to the counter and put in your order and pay w credit card, the receipt you have to sign has a space for "tip" even though all they do is ring your order and sometimes carry it out to your table, they don't serve you at all. So we just draw a line thru the "tip" spot and pay whatever it costs.. Then they also have a TIP JAR there at the register.. wtf?! But I always wonder if anybody actually tips them?
I wanted to respond something to this but I keep looking at your avatar, and I keep on forgetting what I was going to say..

many of those credit card pos programs for such places have that default setting built in. i am sick of those tip jars though. i have seen them at places where tipping would just be insane.

I know tipping is a custom that varies significantly (along with included gratuities and service charges) from state to state, and country to country. That said, this is my outlook in tipping:

At the restaurant:

1. If you provide excellent service, have some charisma, and everything is generally pleasurable, I will always tip 20% on large tabs.

2. If service is not that great, but the person is still polite, I'll tip 10-15%.

3. If things are really just a fuckup, I'll have management replace my server. I've done this more than once and it works wonders, especially if the establishment is good, and it's just the server that sucks.

4. If you complain about your tip, I will tell you to fuck off.

At the bar:

If I get my beer within a reasonable amount of time, I tip $1/beer - always.

If you pour me strong drinks all night, I'll tip you $20 or so, and do some shots with you.

If you poor watered down bitch drinks, you get a watered down tip.

Like many here, I was also a server and bartender for awhile. Fact is, there are many honest, hardworking people who work in the service industry, just trying to make a living for themselves. In many states in the US, their "wages" are $2-4/hr, because the restaurants decide the employees can just live off their tips - WHICH THEY OFTEN REQUIRE THEM TO CLAIM FOR TAXES.....gay.

So, if you tip generously when service is optimal, you're helping honest people keep an honest job. Don't be a fucking scrooge over this shit, and it will come full circle in due time, I promise.

I didn't know you were at that bar near me? But you have the story mixed up. It was a $20 not a $10, and I asked to see her bare tits, not her ass. And she did show 'em, but considering it was a strip bar, I figured it was ok even if she was the waitress and not up on stage to ask.
