i wouldnt say a damn thing if anyone ASKED me for a tip. Thats just ignorant, even when i was younger and worked in a restaurant i wouldnt ask, and when i do tip its more often than not 20%. Very rarely will they get less than that even if the service is terrible, just because we've all had our days its different when u've been in their shoes before

If you want to get paid well, try some education or some decent work.
I have worked at a restaurant as a cook before, and I gotta say, I agree with this statement.

I don't think a waitress deserves a tip because they walked up and got a beer for you, but if they are friendly, the services is good, like boss said above, then I will tip. But most of the time, it's crap, and if the food is good, I generally just walk back to the kitchen, and hand some money to the cook and tell him to put it in his pocket.

Seems like your fellow Czechie didnt feel the same way. I was in Prague last year and stopped in to have a beer with some friends. We just wanted one and the waitress kept coming back and giving us dirty looks asking us if we wanted more beer (nice of her minus the dirty looks when we said no thank you). We just wanted the one. The check comes and we see this (notice the TIPS NOT INCLUDED underlined about 100 times)

We were going to pay in the smallest coins we could gather up and just leave this mound of small coins. However, she came back and scared us into tipping her.

LOL what a crazy one

P.S Prague is absolutely beautiful

For those that say that worked in the service industry, I feel you..Even though I only worked for 3 months in it (summer job at age 17)!
It was time for me to get a real job so I quit (they called me back because they liked how I worked).
Went to college, started my career in the Technology industry. Completion of Goals.

lol - well - the people in Prague learned a lot from tourists. if they have a computer printout in english as bill you obviously ended up in a tourist trap

the "I don't believe in tipping" is btw a famous (obviously not famous enough) quote from "Reservoir Dogs"

the movie quote does not reflect my tipping habits

A waitress once came up to me I should tip at least 15%.

Well guess what? Maybe I didn't think the service was that good!

Exactly.

I have had that happen a couple of times where the service was so bad I left no tip. They came out to the parking lot, or to the front entrance to ask if I had made a mistake. I said, "Nope. It is clear as day there is a big ZERO with a line through it on the tip line."

For this one fuck, who was easily the worst server I had in some time, last summer... I told him when asked, "Here's the tip. Provide better service and make sure my meal does not take three hours".

Then I walked off.

Bingo, bartended in college and the same results... U knew a person by name, or by drink... drink in there preferred seat, ready before they sat down.

Man I kinda miss those days... When regulars tipped you on your birthday and gave ya christmas presents.

There's a Ghirardelli store here that serves ice cream. A woman there who's apparent job it is to bring people's orders to them when they're ready was constantly mentioning tips, asking for tips, giving people looks for not giving her a tip, etc. You're bringing us ICE CREAM...not even taking our order or anything, just bringing us the fucking ice cream! Naturally we didn't tip her because I had never seen anyone in say a Dairy Queen get tipped for it so she certainly wasn't entitled to one, and of course she gave us a nasty look on the way out. Fuck her though, that's ridiculous. Especially in these economic times, how can you demand tips from people for something that doesn't deserve a tip?

I was actually gonna comment on the movie quote too. One of my favorite movies. Also you are correct about the tourist trap as we were checking out the Charles Bridge at the time.

I don't really get it how tipping works in us. I do always tip about 15% when I am there, but do waiters actually keep the money?

Do they actually make 15% to 20% of their takings?? They would make more than the restaurant owner than! No restaurant owner has such a high margin after paying all the expenses on the end of the month. So it's better to be a waiter than the restaurant owner.

What's the logic here??

Not everybody pays 15%. A lot of times the house will take some of the money. Or the waiters will have to also pay out other staff members for their assistance. Plus, waiters make very low wages.

I think a good waiter at a decent establishment can make pretty decent money. A bad waiter, anywhere, is not going to make money.

I tip very well... I start at 20% and I've tipped over 200% on occasion. I guess I'm the odd man out here but tip delivery guys as well for appliances/furniture/whatever... they seem to be the most grateful as I guess not many people do.

I do however lower my tips if I get bad service. I've left $0 tip before. However when I go some place and the service is outstanding I have no problem dropping a 50%- 100% tip. I know I'll be back there and servers remember the big tippers. Everywhere I'm a regular they know me by name. Places I really frequent usually know what I'm going to order. There's something to be said for walking in some place and having the server say, "your usual?". The server will usually hang out at my g/f and I's table for a bit and I know many of them really well. When I bought a house two separate waitresses got my g/f and I congratulations cards.

People appreciate being tipped well as it's their livelihood. I know I'm financially better off than any server out there and I don't mind spreading the wealth. That's just part of who I am.

The mailman gets paid $24+ an hour at least here in San Diego. Servers or waitresses get from $8 to $11 and depend on tips if they do a decent job. But if someone asked me for more money i would take it all back and walk out leaving nothing as that is not good service thats extortion

Best tip you can give a waiter or waitress that gives horrible service is a penny -50 cents and make it known.... Not tipping at all, makes them think you forgot or your an asshole but more likely the 1st. Don't leave any doubt.

They will know they fucked up

i would tell them to fuck off and take the 20.00 back. you don't owe someone a tip. its something you do out of kindness for good service as a way of saying "hey thanks, i appreciate it". otherwise, you have a menu and price list which details the extent of your financial obligations in the transaction.

Your in Europe, some countries, it is already calculated. In the U.S., it is not and 15-20 percent is the standard. Service staff make something like 4.25 per hour and rely on tips to make a living, if you can't afford it, why would you go and eat and leave no tip? Just to be a jerkoff?

if service was good I always tip 20% . if I see new kid thats having hard time, i give him 30% and tell him that hes doing good and it will come to him sooner or later. I walked my way into fine dining restaurant biz by lying my ass off that I waited tables before. That paid for my college! Graduated from college with ZERO loans.

Tipping is not a requirement, it's mentality like this that makes people think they can offer the worst service ever and still get a big tip. Tipping is OPTIONAL, just because you don't tip does not make you a jerk or can't afford it, it just means they didn't earn anything more than what they are being paid.

Pay is low in the restaurant industry because of people being tipped good.

I usually start at 10-15%. If I get exceptional service, it goes up to 20%. If the waiter slacks, they get docked. If it's terrible then I don't tip (but that's really hard for me to do for some reason.)

Asking for a tip will get a big "Fuck off" from me. I usually tip quite well, generally 20-30% if the service is great, not just good. I understand most of their money comes from tips but if you look like you don't want to be there or treat me like shit, I'll give you 15%, maybe less. I'm very big on customer service to say the least.

The federal minimum wage for servers and bartenders is $2.13 an hour. That is what it was in 1999 and it's the same now.

Anywhere I am going my girlfriend buys one of those little books that tells you the do's and dont's of the country. I always know how much to tip etc lol

But seriously in the USA I always tip 20% unless service was excellent I leave more. If I know I'll be going back to the place I leave a bit more too, being a tourist and with my accent if the same waiter/waitress is working they remember us and service is even better coz they know we will tip more.

When I was in college I worked at a nice place in Miami Beach. A couple had a nice dinner and the service was great. They guy did not leave me a tip so I chased him down to another club they went to just down the street and confronted the fucker in front of his girlfriend. He handed over a $30 which was exactly 20%.

That said, I don't like tipping even at Starbucks so I just try to avoid any situation where I am expected to tip.

Best place to tip is in New Zealand, you buy a $18 round of drinks, put $20 on the bar then take your drinks back to your table, 5 minutes later the barman comes up and says " you left two bucks on the bar sir" and hands it back.

Americas got to be the only country in the world still using dollar bills, takes a while to realize as a tourist that those dollars are just for tipping.

I start my tipping at 10% and it goes up or down according to service. If they do nothing but bring us the food hot and refill the drinks with a basic attitude...10%. If they're terrible, they'll get the rounded off amount of the bill...an $88.34 bill would go to $89.00 and give them a 66 cent tip (they KNOW they gave shitty service). If I get exceptional service, that same bill would be rounded up to to $110.00...plus, I'll make a POINT of asking for the manager while I'm sitting there and telling them directly that I got great service.

If I get good service I tip generously. Otherwise its usually the bare minimum. If someone asked me for more or whatever, I'd remove the tip completely.

Hey buddy, it's the employers job to pay the staff, not mine.

If serving staff have a problem with their pay, negotiate for better or find another fucking job.
