I thought having to ask the same question here was ruff.... geez. I have been looking at car forums for 2 days and found out only 50% of a forum being retarded is actually pretty good. It appears to be close to 99% on car forums.

I'm thinking about getting a slightly larger than normal truck, an F250. I really don't need power beyond what a standard full size truck would offer I just think this is more attractive. I was told I could get performance chip and increase the truck's mpg from 11 to 14. It seems I can get 1 more mpg if I throw in a K&N air filter (I guess thats what they said, it was hard to get past the fanboy bias and the hobbyist jargon).

Do you guys concur? Is there anything else I could do to increase the mpg of this truck?

I have a 2003 Jeep Wrangler. I bought the K&N filter, it did nothing. Just nice to have since you can clean it without having to buy a new one. I put 31" tires on mine and I lost about 60 miles per tank, no joke. I was getting 220-240 miles per tank, threw them on and now I'm getting 170-180 on a good tank which measures out to about 12.5mpg so I'd stick with your stock tires.

My girlfriends brother has an F250 Diesel, lifted about 4" with 35" tires on it with 20" wheels. Now, he has it chipped and keeps it on fuel economy mode, claiming to get about 18mpg. He also has the K&N cone filter as well, but not sure if that made much of a difference.

Did you change the ring and pinion gears also? If not then your odometer/trip/speedo will all show lower numbers with larger tires since you're covering more ground from a slower rotation.

I've got a Chevy 2500 diesel with a Banks turbocharger, oversized stainless headers and exhaust. I get low 20's on the highway plus it's pretty quick. With the auxiliary tank I installed it's got a cruising range of 1200 miles.

You can calibrate the speedo via the ECU - wtf chang ring and pinion

that is probably the dumbest fucking thing i've ever heard. You know you do not have to do that even in older cars - the speedo runs off a cable(older cars) hooked upto a gear that goes in the gearbox - change that!

It's a bit like changing the tyres to fix a blown headlight globe.

@ OP - Helping the motor breathe will give you better MPG. I added over radiator intake, extractors, exhaust and custom tune and all that increased MPG alot - not a clue on exact numbers.

I guess you don't know anything about larger tires and gear ratios then. Maybe you should do a little research.

My jeep with big tires couldn't even use 5th gear at 70mph or else it would slow down. I had to change the gears to 4.10 to increase the rpm's. Plus it fixed the gauges too.

I recall Mythbusters doing a segment on whether it was better to drive tailgate up or down for mileage.

Ford actually states in their F-series manual that you get 10% better mileage with the tailgate down.

But they were proved wrong.

Are you getting dualies on the f250?

Yeah, mythbusters covered tons of things. Tailgate UP was notably more efficient than down. Just using your head is probably better regardless. Such as dont jam the gas pedal, be smooth. Keep tires properly inflated.

That's honestly the best thing you can do.

Any modifications to the engine / tires / etc usually only bring DOWN your MPG, not increase it.
