Scotland releasing terroist who killed 259 people.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1250...le_wsj_gadgv1&

This pisses me off. The guy who was convicted of bombing a Pan Am flight that killed 259 people (189 of them US citizens) was released by Scottish authorities today because he has terminal prostate cancer.

From the article: "Defying intense pressure from the U.S. government, Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill chose to release Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi on "compassionate grounds," reasoning that he should be allowed to be with his family"

So the guy goes home to Libya and is greeted like a hero and gets to spend is last days among friends and family.

I know keeping him in jail until he dies won't bring back the dead, but to me this is just s slap in the face to all the families and friends of the people who died on that plane.

I don't see an upside to this.

Two alternatives, both bad.

The guy dies in a prison in Scotland, pissing off his family and countrymen...

Or the guy dies at home, surrounded by his family, pissing off survivors of the people he killed.

I have no answer.

Looks like a lot of the families are split over it - there is some doubt over his guilt.

He is supposed to have just weeks to live - i suppose sending him home to die is the humane thing to do, even if he was involved..
Good over evil.

both true, but lets say he dies in jail.. His family will be extremely pissed and chances are that this would cause them to want to kill many more people. Sure, the families of the ones that he killed will be happy that he died in jail, but the end results will, in most cases, be much worse than the reason he was in prison for.

So I think letting him die with his family will help, in a way, to not have his family kill more people, maybe. (assuming that some of them are also terrorists). The families of the ones who died will be pissed, but it's better than taking a chance having more innocent people killed. That's just my opinion. Terrorists suck, but sometimes you need to do things to not create more deaths.

many in scotland and england do not belive he did it.

they had no evidence on him except he was in a certain country at a certain time.

plus with all due respect this is scotish law (and england has similar laws) that people can be released ifd they have only 3 months to live.

plus on top of that we (the uk) are making lots of top oil deals with Libya so at the end of the day it benafits the uk as a whole to do this.

Yes it may piss a few of in the usa but at the end of the day this is in truth business.

Supposedly thousands of people greeted him in Libya. So much for "moderate" Muslims.

Many family members of the victims are convinced he's innocent.

I think they're right. The evidence in the case was incredibly weak, lots of information was withheld during the trial, there are numerous rumors and statements about witnesses being offered bribes to testify, etc.

Personally, I think it's fairly likely that the identities of those actually responsible were kept hidden, perhaps to aid the search for their other associates.

Yup give into them - great idea....

Don't know the background of the case, but if he actually did do it, then no leniency should be shown IMO

I dont think you can blame the people that greeted him in his homeland. Dont forget that the US and UK WERE very much their enimies back then. If a US marine/agent had been held hostage in Iran for 20 years, he would be greeted with a parade as well + most likely get to drink a beer with Obama.

It's not like the american pilots that carried out the last of Henry Kissinger bombings in Korea, were put on trial either.

The only problem I have with this, is that it undermines the International Legal system in a time where we need it the most

This is a moment we needed Dick Cheney's assassination squads. Imagine a bullet going through that motherfuckers forehead stepping off the plane while thousands of Muslims cheered for him.

Dick Cheney would have called that compassionate end of life counseling!

The guy dies in a US prison where he can receive plenty of medical care and his suffering life can be extended as long as possible.

that's a good upside.

What about the ones who rubbed salt into the wounds of the families by waving Scotland Flags as he walked down the steps of the Plane? He is a scum bag and should have spent the last few weeks of his life in a Scottish Jail. He deserved nothing from us, he didn't give all those people on the Plane anything apart from an early death.

As I said - Dont forget that the US and UK WERE very much their enimies back then. He attacked his enemy like any soldier is trained to do. You dont warn the enemy before you attack him.

on top of that, libya is one of the most important European partners in africa. Both when it comes to development of africa and future Solarpower energy to Europe

One have to be naive to think those facts arent a part of this case.

The only problem I have with this, is that it undermines the International Legal system in a time where we need it the most. But we cant always get what we want
