Ok that does it. From now on I bring my chefs knife and cutting board to the supermarket. I'm only paying for the edible portions of food sold by weight. I'm slicing the corn right off the cob, I'm not eating the gdamn cob so I'm not paying for the gdamn cob! Who's with me!!!!

It's the same with broccoli v. broccoli crowns. The stem piece weighs the most yet is un-edible.
You know that broccoli slaw stuff you can buy in the states? That is made with the stems. It is fine to eat.

But on your point, if you don't want them than buy the stuff that is already cut up.

Here corn is sold by cob, but people peel back the husk to peer inside usually. The imported california corn is half-shucked and plastic wrapped, so no shucking is neccessary. But the local corn.. .well, you do what you have to do to make sure it's what you want

i will have some meat removed from the bone. i even have had them butterfly and debone a whole chicken. i do not make stock so i do not need the bones, figure why pay for them if it is a service they offer.
i also will break off 2-3 bananas off a bunch as i never eat a full bunch before they go bad so i just take what i think i will eat that week.
i do keep broccoli as well as artichoke stalks even though the store has a bin for them, they are edible and the artichoke stalk tastes like like the heart.
i will pull the outer leaves off of cauliflower and broccoli, same goes for carrot stems. again stores provide bins.
i guess one area i may be cheap at is when dealing with ginger. i never need a piece the size of a dinner plate so i snap off a piece about the size of my finger. the produce guy said it was acceptable to do it but it does feel a little cheap. i just hate wasting food and or money.

You should always leave the husk on ... and steam that shit in the pot with crabs. The way that Old Bay gets into the corn.

Yummy.

Well, I say right on. However, maybe they were French....

In France, you are perfectly well within your legal right to go into a supermarket, eat anything that is edible to "test it", pull off anything that is excess weight and unedible so that what you buy is what you (want to) eat.

Which is why there are security guards in supermarkets in France.... not necessarily to stop you leaving without paying, but to stop the bums coming in and eating everything without paying and before leaving (100% legal).

An odd law that makes for great foreign viewing for foreigners seeing French prod, smell pieces of fruit, cheese, vegetables in the supermarket.

Doubting they were French but interesting info anyway.
