Who is good in design these days?

Looking for a designer. No outsourcing and no agencies, looking for a solo guy I can work with directly.

Who is top of their game? Solid CSS is a MUST. This is 2009, don't dare show me tables.

Please give me some links to your folios.

You mean, your outsourced designers style(s)?

there are people who may know both - i don't deny that. but from experience guys that service both are semi-good in both fields or at least one - that is why they trying to provide everything that may pay some $$$ on the way. but its always good if one knows a little bit of other outside of his/her specific specialty. and again i don't deny that there maybe geniuses who are best at everything they touch and do, but most are just mediocre and never propel at anything.

with all that said if someone wants quality results and service one must employ people specifically specializing in their own fields - be it graphics, coding or anything else; or hire a firm who provides all required services altogether.

regarding coding html - tables era was pretty easy, it was pretty easy basically for anyone to pickup how html works with simple stuff like table layouts. once css kicked in with complex "layered" positioning and many other thigns that are not cells like in tables - things get complicated - now to be any good with xHTML/CSS - you have to be dedicated to it thats why its harder for designers to pick it up an offer it as a service - either they spend all their time doing graphics or coding. and again i don't deny there maybe be some versatile guys offering quality of both ;)

I can hardly think of one or two tube sites I designed in my entire career that DIDN'T require me to cut and code the design. Design and coding for the web typically go hand-in-hand. And some of us EXCELLENT designers are also EXCELLENT coders...and more than just HTML/CSS.

no doubt man, and if you say you are EXCELLENT COOK - I won't doubt it - but it doesn't mean you can succesfully run 5 star restaurant by default that's what i meant saying designers are not coders by default.
if you love designing and great at it you will find that by coding you waste more time and loose more; if you hired someone to help you with coding who is good at it you probably could do better and more.

> Design and coding for the web typically go hand-in-hand.
- indeed and its always good for designers to know basics of html. but you cannot be best at everything, therefore each specializes in their own scope of work - it works best that way IMHO

wdforty, we're not "he" we are design studio - company of designers and coders, and no none of us worked at webinc before. btw online portfolio hasn't been updated in a long long time - don't ask why - busy as it is))

Yes, I'm a designer and work 15+ hours a day doing projects. I know I have said this so many times before. I also have several employees that work with as well and a couple programmers and a toonist. Every order goes through me and I make sure the job gets done perfect for my clients.

If you would like to contact me for a quote I'm always here and would love to help you with your design needs.

I honestly do not read that many design threads unless I need work. I had even contacted you before for some work before I got laid up real bad about 6 months or so ago.
I was just asking if we can request you or a given designer and I had not seen you say that before. When I contacted you previously I assumed they would be done by your staff.

Is there a way to know which designs on your portfolio you or other designers did. Heck there are some designs that interested me in the past, and if they were done by someone in your staff I would like to use them.

Again was not trolling you. Just felt it was a valid question in my instance.

No problem at all. I remember you writing for a project several months ago. If you would like to contact me via e-mail, I would be glad to show you work I have done personally. If you have a site that you like the style of in my portfolio I will also put you with that designer for your project. Whether it be Steven, Chris, Michael or myself. I have several talented designer that have been with my company for several years full time. I always match the client with that designer to keep with the same style as we all have our own. Over the last 5 years my company has grown so much that I?ve had to hire help so I can keep repeat clients happy and also accept new clients and get the work done in a timely manner.

That project got scrapped for medical reasons. I do have banner needs though and a few other minor things. Was mostly thinking about elevated X integration and some possible mainstream logo work.

If only I could stay THAT busy. I can knock out a killer layout in less than 2 days. If someone kept me busy enough to fill the queue I would be very happy indeed. Hell, even in my salaried positions (past and present) I haven't been kept anywhere near that busy...so as it stands, coding fills in the time between design projects. I'd rather be busy and productive than hold out for my forte. Also, coding my projects allows me to make certain it is optimized for load time. When I design, I have the coding in mind as I go. Too many "designers" simply cut the project in Photoshop and save for web. When you know your way around HTML and CSS you have pages that are FAR lighter in weight than that of those guys

Wait, ya mean, you dont need 5 outsourcers to manage all that work? LOL

No designers are *that* busy these days ;)

Even if I had "all that work" I would never outsource. I tend to be too picky. It doesn't mean I am perfect or my shit doesn't need tweaking...it just means I need to be the one who does it

Sounds great, I'm always here. I hope you get feeling better, I know you have been through it the last couple weeks. You are a very positive person to stay as strong as you have after everything.

you can do everything by yourself, hell even i did it in the past from photoshop, html, js to writing application models. all i'm saying - when you run business you tend to hire best resources for specific tasks within company - that's how you can grow your business - which in turn can produce greater results for clients and with better quality (when everyone involved know what they are doing). of course there is posibility to grow doing everything yourself - but in my opinion you can do only so much. i'm not saying you are wrong and i'm right not at all, to each its own. OP asked for specific things in his original post where he pointed out that he doesnt want to deal with companies rendering such services, i didn't bug him by spamming my service but i felt that i needed to point out that design and coding may not always be best combo in one person because today's html coding is much more complex than what it used to be before and requires full time attention to be any good at it, just like with graphics - experience and learning more as you go.

- mostly but not everyone. many factors, but mostly depends on how Pro you are and how well you can organize and run your business.
