Planning your fire escape..
Hi guys, this could be an old pic, lol looking at the pc it is!
![]() Question, how many of you have home insurance and have included there work in the insurance or do you have seperate business insurance. I have hundreds of tapes, terrabytes of content on harddrives, my pc & a laptop all with more content on that is relevant to my business. Its not the product, its the content thats unreplaceable & I cant understand if insurance pays out straight cash to replace loss earnings or what it was worth or if its replaced with payments to new models for new content ![]() |

My bedroom is on the second floor with only one door out then theres a hallway and long staircase going down, so if a fire I'm fucked, so I keep one of those escape ladders in my bedroom. Balcony is too high to free jump and not break a leg.

I have offsite backups to protect my data... at any time there's at least 3 copies of my data, one offsite, and the oldest version is at most 2-3 weeks stale.
Most of my equipment would be covered under my home insurance but I don't really have specific items covered. Business continuance insurance would be something a bit more complicated, and it's not something I've looked at yet. One thing you absolutely positively should do is grab your camera and walk around, videoing or photographing all of your equipment and other assets, so that if you ever do have to make a claim it's quite clear what was there. Do this periodically and hold up a current newspaper as proof if you're feeling paranoid. Don't forget to look in the mirror to include the camera you're using. |

Expanding on the last message, I have separate photographic insurance so I took a pic of all of my equipment separately... each photo has my drivers licence placed next to the item to prove that I'm not just grabbing a stock image from somewhere.

I have apartment insurance, we had a fire in my building almost 2 years ago...and were lucky it was in a basement apt...were on the 2nd floor. We did have some smoke damage. When we new it was time to leave, I did grab an external hard drive and a couple of cd's with images. My wife grabbed our wedding album, important documents, and some coach bags. (All I really cared about was images of my family and photos I have taken from Handball events.)
If you need to protect some stuff, stick it in your fridge, depending on how serious the fire is...the metal should protect it from damage. It is best to prepare for something in case it happens, many times things will happen when your not home though. So take photos of your values, and save receipts of high end items. Every 2 years I place images on external hard drives and ask my mom or sister to hold them somewhere in their house. |

I'm on the first floor, my mac and my laptop and important documents and CDs are now right beside the window, the same one I will be going out of with it all in my arms.
I just found out today I lost most of my photos of my deceased parents to water damage, and have taken measures to ensure that the few that I have left nothing will ever happen too.

Or buy a fireproof case and store it permanently in there... no need to rush things into the fridge if there's a fire (or did you mean KEEP it in the fridge?)
