Cartagena is a city of contrast. In Boca Grande, the tourist part and the Old City you have everything from super elegant to touristy... Boca grande is like any tourist beach town really and I find nothing special about it. To give you an idea the have people selling cartons of Marlboro in the street and offering them for 40 dollares. If you go into to the supermarket you can buy the same carton for 33,000 pesos or 17.80.

Old City is definitely worth exploring, it is not only pretty but very interesting from histories standpoint. There are some super restaurants there as well.

The party in in C'gena is super, you can find anything you look for. Be careful as to where you go and as to who you go with.. Don't go to the atm and take out a 500 bucks and carry it with you, don't count your money in front of people.. I other words don't be a stupid tourist.

On the beach, DONOT let the ladies who give massages touch you.. Once the get close enough to touch you you will not get rid of them until you give them money.

I do not like the beaches in C'gena, but then again I lived on Grand Cayman island for 12 years.

It is defiantly worth the money and time to spend time on Isla Rosarios... It is like going back in time and the beaches are incredible. It is a short boat trip and there are places to stay there..

Someone asked about not speaking Spanish... Well I would suggest you start learning because if you have to depend on them speaking English you can figure on staying at your super hotel... It is not a hard thing to learn... Comprende?

Is ColUmbia dangerous, yes no doubt about it. are there kidnappings, yes no doubt about it. Who gets kidnapped these days, dumb ass gringos who wander into the mountains flashing money around or politicians.

I have lived here like I said 10 years and have never had anything happen to me. I have visited parts of Colombia where they have never seen a gringo before.. Am I carful, yes.

I have I ever been hurt YES, but it was by having my heart broken by a Colombian woman. I can tell you this, you have NO IDEA what love is like until you have been loved by a Colombian woman.

Is Colombia a good place for an american to live, depends on the American. If you have the attitude that you are going to live here, learn about the culture, become involved you will be fine. If you come with an attitude that you are better than Colombian or that THEY DONT HAVE REAL MONEY, DOLLARS you will be fucked and unhappy.

Drug war yes, And with the help of the US the country has gotten a lot better. Was it achieved by methods that liberals would approve of, Nope... But it works.

Ok finishing my book here, Colombia is great, it is complicated, hard to understand, dangerous for the ignorant, and a wonderful place to be if you can blend in.
