Rick must be a smooth talker since according to the article they have not wanted to sell the domain. Domains.com this would be worth a lot of money and I wonder if one of the owners of domain registers like godaddy would purchase it.

I am sure they will not let it go unless it is a blockbuster deal. A one word domain like this = instant business. Even if the buyer did not know anything about a webpage, he can just link up a godaddy white label or just sell ads on a page and make money.

ummm yes it does have value of course Jim......but just sticking up a page or white label on a one word domain is no guarantee of success...example...just look at the waste that is the mega domain of sex.com

hmmmm you got me there, but you cant compare the value of a great mainstream domain to an adult. and if you gave me both domains I bet I would make more money from domains.com, with sex.com you need a lot of content and updates....and you also have another million sex urls as competition. Domain registers...hmmmmm I can only name 5 fast.

good point for sure, usually takes time, for a quick fix take a white label and dabble with the colors and also make a cool logo...it can make a big difference.

Unless they find someone very interested in it, I doubt it'll sell unless they settle for less than $100K. It's not as premium a domain as most here think...

Under $100K for Domains.com would be a joke. $500K - $1 million is more like it. Aftermarket.com, a far worse name, sold for over $100K to a domain company. Hell, there's probably many mere domain investors out there who would pay well over $100K for it just to hold, monetize and resell.

I will say this - the owners are probably looking for mid-7 figure, which I don't think is doable right now. The large registrars have established brands and wouldn't buy it except for the type-in traffic, and I just don't think there's a player-in-waiting in the industry willing or with enough money available to fork out what the owner will want for it. Financing is probably the only way a deal will be reached.

Why would they need a broker to sell it? Some one educate me. Why can't they do some press relases that they are going to sell it. Contact all the big companies. Make a bunch of posts on messages boards, get the word out. If it is a good domain you think word of mouth it would find its way to the right people. Take the highest offer. Why pay a broker a comission to sell a domain that most people would want ?

Remember last month those 100 domains that were auctioned off by the company themselves, $7 million for doctor.com, wedding.com and at least 30 more premiums. Rick would've got them $14 million.

There's no central media for a press release for domains like this, takes some leg work.

No, Rick would have been smart enough to sell them individually and would have probably gotten a bunch more than $14 million even.

For domains of a grand nature like that, getting to the decision contacts of the larger companies (press release may not find its way into their hands) and the negotiation strategy/tactics then used to maximize the sale make a huge key to getting a sale done on something like that (or at least for a price the seller wants). That's not to say they couldn't get lucky on their own, but that's what would likely have to happen - getting lucky. I doubt they'd be using Rick if they had the contact network/negotiation skills themselves. That's why to use a broker. Get 80-90% of a nice number vs. 100% of a much lower number or 0 if you can't get it sold for what you want.
