Avatar: What a rip off. What HACK made this?

Some of you will agree, others may not.

For the $ 300,000,000 or $ 400,000,000 it cost to make this CARTOON, First off...

When this HACK wrote the concept for this script over 10-15 years ago, did he have to RIP OFF every other great Sci Fi movie made in the past 15 years and embed it into his film...thinking that the audience wouldn't notice???

For all the MONEY invested, couldn't they come up with something NEW??? MY GOD?? There are millions of writers out there....

Can't they come up with new visuals or new concepts???

What am I writing about?

Here are just a few of the stolen items in Avatar from other movies:

1) The very start of the film, soldiers coming out of hyper sleep, ready to go to work / fight:
Concept stolen from Alien & Alien 2.

2) The single man walking machines used in battle:
Visual and design stolen from Alien 2 AND The Matrix 2 and 3.

3) Flying Dragons and riding on them, gee, so many movies to choose from there.... how about Episode III Star Wars, didn't Obi Wan ride around on one also? And as for the Dragons, Lord of the Rings looked really familiar watching this hack cartoon.

4) As for the concept of the "Avatar" where a person is "placed" into a different body, while the original body is safely kept. MMmmmm...... Did anybody see a movie called The Matrix I, II and III???
5) The staging of the Battles.... 2 battles, one small one (Star Wars, Tie fighter & Millenium falcon fight) Then, the 2nd big battle, (fight over death star)

Of course, I won't forget the concept story line of these advanced hi tech military people that have problems fighting the local blue people that use arrows to fight with win. It's such a Hollywood "I hope the underdog wins" kind of bullshit story.

oh, and the humans are on this planet to get some kind of rock? hello??? What does the rock do for us???? They make nothing clear. We need the "rock" for higher stock value? Lots of thought put in there.

The creatures on the planet looked original. At least they didn't totally walk out of Jurasic Park.

The ONLY moment of the film that was original, was when they would link up to the animals thru their little tentical thingy's. But for 3 hours, they just had the one thing and they used the concept to death. Every 5 mins somebody was hooking up with an animal. It was totally overplayed.

Yes, the visuals are nice, the CG work is fine. But as stated earlier, this movie has no originality when it comes to the skeleton of the film. Take away the 3D and you have a long winded excerise of visual effects with NO story. Nothing for the mind, only candy for the eyes.

This movie was clearly made for 15 year olds that haven't seen all the great Sci Fi that is out there, and add to that all the dam advertising, almost forcing people into the theaters....why??? because T.V. told us to go!!!

This movie is prime example on how to sell a product. Excellent promotion. They could've made another Gigli and it would've made over a billion with advertising like that one. Of course, this move was aimed directly at young people, and the 40+ generation that loves a good sci fi.

When Star Wars came out, people saw it in groves because IT WAS ORIGINAL. It didn't need TV commercials every 10 fucking mins to brain wash the world into seeing this blue cartoon.

Star Wars cost $ 9M.... this cartoon cost $ 3- 400,000,000 !!!!!!

It's a sign of the times that people in powerful places making these motion pictures don't give a dam about art or originality.

It's all about marketing. The creators simply COMBINED every hit sci fi flick out there and tossed in some hot CG and walah.... insta hit.

Star Wars + Matrix + Jurasic Park + Alien + Saturday morning cartoons = Avatar.

Why people are flocking to pay $ 16.50 for this over blown HACK cartoon is the real story.

This film marks the begining of the complete downfall of all motion pictures. Americans are becoming so stupid they are entertained if you just shine a flash light in their faces for 3 hours and "tell them it's a great movie because it said so on T.V."

Next time, make a movie with something called "ORIGINALITY."

I am so tired of getting ripped of when I go to the movies.

Oh, but if "BIG BROTHER" on TV says it's good, then I must be wrong.

I have to disagree with your main point. Sure the idea isn't wholly original and in some cases he is actually ripping off himself (he wrote and directed Aliens), but marketing alone does not get you this kind of box office. No, they couldn't have made another Gigli and made this kind of money with an epic ad campaign. Big ads can bring people in over the first 1-2 weeks of a movie. You can make a good looking trailer, hype the shit out of a movie and draw an audience out the gate. But if the movie sucks, word gets out and people stop going. To make the kind of money this movie has made you need word of mouth. You need people going back to see it again. You need people telling their friends, co-workers, family and internet chat board buddies that they should go see the movie. Here are a few examples: Land of the Lost. For a month before that movie came out Will Ferral was everywhere. Commercials for that movie were on ever five minutes and you couldn't exist without seeing something about it. And it bombed right out the gate. All the huge ad campaign did was give people enough of a look at it to think it was going to be shit and they didn't go. They marketed the hell out of it and it didn't work. Year One? Same thing. Speed Racer? Same thing. Speed Racer was aimed at the exact same market as Avatar, had a huge marketing campaign and failed.

There are a lot of people, myself included, that liked the movie. Again, there is stuff in it that isn't original and it is commercial and within about 30 minutes you know what is going to happen in the end, but the ride is fun and it is entertaining. This is 100X the movie the Matrix trilogy was. Those movies were arguably the most overrated pieces of shit ever made. Is it better than Star Wars? Not the first three. But it is better than the last three for sure (although I actually liked the one where he finally became Darth Vader).

This movie is not the sign of the downfall of American societ. The sign of the downfall of American society is that they watch TV shows like American Idol, any reality show featuring anyone named Hilton or Kardashian and half the general issue drek that is on the TV. And it isn't enough that they watch it, they then go out and buy it on DVD or buy the newest American Idol winners CD. That, my friend, is far bigger a sign of the downfall of American society then spending some money to go be entertained by a pretty good movie for a few hours.

I agree the story was unoriginal (and too predictable, but remember this was a movie for everyone - including 10 year olds), but do you think someone will spend $½ billion on total untried and untested ideas?

I mean even the examples you gave (ex. Matrix) build on someone elses ideas.

Please show me the last time someone made an original movie. This was original in its own right. If you want to completely generalize and claim the whole good guy bad guy imperialistic crap was unoriginal, then you can find another 100 movies to criticize. Furthermore, I highly doubt that the greatest filmmaker in history, the one who made two terminators, has to resort to stealing from his own or other movies.

Actually I was just correcting some facts, but since you brought it up...

He had to settle a lawsuit out of court with Harlan Ellison concerning a possible rip off of Terminator (mostly due to some comments he made during an interview concerning what inspired him)

Despite making the most money with his films, I don't personally consider him the best filmmaker that ever lived, but I do confess that I sat through AVATAR and time flew and it certainly didn't feel like 3 hours.

He does make great popcorn movies (probably something slightly more than merely popcorn movies even), I'll give him that... He'll be probably be able to continue forever now since he never fails to make money no matter what people predict.

Hollywood is run by corporate bean counters now instead of creative people. So they deliver boat loads of sequels & movies based entirely off FX or actors names & pre-market tested concepts that ensure a return on investment. Movie making is extremely expensive now & only superwealthy producers who can self finance can really have artistic freedom.

Even then the ability to create compelling stories is very intangible aka tom cruise running a studio now that produces schlock like valkrie. I thought with his excellence in choosing scripts over his career he could do the same as a studio big. Wrong.

theres plenty of creative talent left out there (like the people who made obama-girl) but dont have the money/connections to plug into the hollywood hype machine.

like sands in the hour glass, so are the days of our lives.

Mind your own business.

If the movie avoided 100% of the tropes of science fiction, then it might not have been much of a science fiction movie.

With $300 mill at stake, a creator usually will try to mitigate risk wherever possible. This is the reason inexpensive indies can have edgier material, but may be more limited in locations, effects, and talent available. Kinda movie-making 101 there.

You know James Cameron wrote and directed Aliens, right? I got the sense that Avatar might even take place in the same SF universe as Aliens.

Why does Avatar's success make people so angry?

So what you are sayin is Star Wars = Matrix + Jurasic Park + Alien + Saturday morning cartoons

Matrix = Jurasic Park + Alien + Saturday morning cartoons + Star Wars

etc

It's not about the storyline, many movies, TV shows etc have the same basic story line...

It's about the production value and technology and things that have never been done before in those departments... it's cutting edge and there's nothing that competes with the visual effects, etc

What I find most interesting is what movies really click with the public. Some things you can just tell will do well. For example the last Transformers movies. The first one did big business so you knew the second one would do well. There are often movies that you see the trailer for that look good and the reviews are positive and they don't do well and other movies that don't look so good and yet they catch on and make a bunch of money. It seems like there is no way of knowing just what will be a hit and what won't be.

You could probably take any movie and say that all the parts are similar to other movies.

Is not easy being at the top...too many haters in this world.

Maybe James Cameron is not into being artistic? Maybe he is just a businessman who wants to make the big bucks and hell did he succeed.

Prolly just like you and your site....you might claim is the best twin sister site but other people might think is shit.

When something is big, losers who hasn't achieved anything in their life will just try to bring it down to make themselves feel more important.

Normally is the losers and nobodies who will whine and complain...while the winner will just laugh himself to the bank
