mp4 or h.264 for mobile site? File size?

I already know the limitations for screen resolutions and bitrates for iphone video, but what are considered acceptable file sizes for iphone downloads?

I have been testing with some files that are around 30-50mb files, and they appear to load extremely slowly on my iphone. I have really poor 3g reception at the office though, so I'm sure that doesn't help.

What specs do you keep your files at, and what do the file sizes generally come out to?

I guess I'm looking for:

1. What file type is generally being used? MP4 or h.264
2. What resolution and bitrate are univerally acceptable
3. What do you keep the length of your files down to to keep the file at an acceptable size?

h264 is no file type - its a codec. and it usually comes as mp4

but mp4 can also be the older h263

flv can be h263 or h264 as well, but has extra features compared to mp4

resolution is 480x320, i think - the bitrates of premade profiles are usually about 1000 kbit/s - but if you use h264 something like 800 kbit/s is more than enough - even 600 should work

and question number 3 i dont understand - tell the bitch to come faster?

Thanks for the response.

For file length, I'm looking for decent median file times to keep the downloads at a decent size. 5 minute files, 10 minute files, unlimitted file sizes, it doesn't matter because it is a progressive download, etc.

don't forget .3gp at 176x144 or 320x240. It looks just as good and downloads a lot faster.

Agreed quote!

h.264 is video codec , not format, many formats such as mp4, m4v, flv, f4v, mov, 3gp etc. can be h.264 as well.

I think your question is mpeg4 or h.264 video codec, container is MP4, .mp4 File Extension. right? If so, h.264, high quality & reduce file size,

resolution must be 480x320, For TV is 640x480, hehe! Around 800kb/s Bit Rate must be enough, advice is 768kb/s or 640kb/s. flv usually is 768kb/s.

I don't understand 3rd question either.
Good luck!

Any questions are welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact James at [email protected].

Thanks for the input all! The plan is to use FFMPEG to transcode thousands of clips in batches. So we're not looking at any other encoding software right now. We have used ffmpeg extremely successfully for our flv samples, and were able to to run batches of literally over 50k sample clips at a time.

JarvisEncoding, do those settings work pretty universally for other mobile devices as well?

FFMPEG is free, hehe!
ON2 is better, however... money!

humm, give you 2 settings advices as follow,
BlackBerry .mp4 -- video codec mpeg4, size 320x240, BitRate 640kbps should work, and 768kbps must be more than enough.
Apple iPod .m4v -- video codec h.264, others almost same above-mentioned setting.
By the way, a good choice from my last customer is Quicktime/iPod as h.264, .m4v, 640x480, 1200kbps Average rate.
Actually depend upon what mobile devices, any questions are welcome to contact me at [email protected].

hey, Jarvis, you gotta go to bed! Agreed depend on what devices, but I think iPod setting advice is unnecessary, and more advice is
Mobile 3GP Video .3gp-- h.264, 352x288, BitRate 448kbps
.3g2 -- mpeg4, 320x240, BitRate 256kbps should work.

Ok, so here's what you do....You get yourself setup with WURFL, and when a device hits your site you detect the video capabilities and then you output accordingly On-The-Fly

Read it all here: http://wurfl.sourceforge.net/vari/Wurfl_H264.ppt
