I make more than all my friends with a degree and i never went to college. But by the age of 15 i had figured out what i wanted to do with my life.

I think business experience trumps college any day.

critical thinking skills and problem solving skills if you do not have these by the age of 18 you are doomed anyway and it has nothing to do with college.

alot of you elders do not understand the world we live in now. you really really do not. i know so many people with degrees that arent even able to find a job.

i dont need a school to teach me anything, i will read about it on the internet and if i wanted to take it a step further find someone through my connections to teach me hands on. classroom teaching is dead, this is now a global market. your piece of paper means nothing now unless you can make people money (the real paper that matters)

so in short your question is to broad, you are grouping just like the other people who said it is a waste, i base things on individuals not groups. i bet you they didnt teach you to do that in school.
This is the BEST explanation of what I have been trying to put into words for a loooong time.

This person has wrote this better than ANY college person could of.

It depends on what you want to be. If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer then college is your BEST option because entry is not an option without this.

If you want to get into a trade or a profession like a musician, programmer etc.. then probably having a good mentor that is in that profession is probably your best option. These are professions that you can't be denied if you're awesome.
eg. if you are an awesome programmer no one can stop you because YOU have the knowledge, not the institution of the profession...if that makes sense

Makes perfect sense. However, you can go to college even as a programmer, to better yourself socially and psychologically, to experience college life. It's still a good idea if you have the money.

its like this. MOST college people go because they have the mindset of getting more out of life. With that mindset of course you will have a better chance its the mindset. Those who stop at high school MORE than likely choose to settle or have things happen to make them settle, like children. Its the mindset. It just so happens that the mindset leads to college.

It really depends on what you want out of your life. I have three different friends that all work for big companies. One has a bachelors degree and the other two don't. Each of the two that don't have degrees have pretty much maxed out where they can go in the company. One of them has two associates degrees and a ton on different networking certificates. Realistically, going to school to get a degree in computers with a focus in being a network admin (which is what he does now) will net him next to zero new knowledge. However, he has been told that he won't get any big raises or promotions until he does. The same with the other guy. He is good at his job, but won't be promoted or get much more money until he gets a degree. In both cases when they ask why the degree is so important they are told the same thing: Getting a bachelors degree shows that you are able to make a commitment, stick to it and follow through on a goal.

The guy that has the degree has been promoted several times in the last few years. Just recently the company needed to lay off a few people. One of them should have been him, but since he has a degree they actually laid off people that didn't and had him take over the jobs those people were doing.

If your goal is to get a good job within a company and work your way up the company ladder, a degree is something you should focus on first. If you want to be your own boss, start your own company or do something else, maybe you don't need one.

Of the two guys I mentioned above that don't have degrees, one of them (the network admin) is going back to school in the fall part time to work towards getting the degree. The other has been working on his own business on the side and it is starting to pick up nicely so it looks like he will be transitioning into that more in the future and not going to school

please point out where i said that?

if college works for you and it helps you excel than i am all for it. i do not see how maintaining a job at a young age can be viewed as having a negative impact on you socially?

i try to look at things for individuals. it takes a very weak minded person to continually group people.

college for me would have been a waste. for you it was not. so be it.

just like you have people on the side without degress screaming it is a waste because they made it. their is people on the other side screaming it's not a waste because that made it with it.

individual circumstances have individual comparisons.

If this was my interview question I would say: 4 more years of experience at least. Plus better quality network. Oh yeah and I never did dope or get a D U I PLUS my credit is immaculate. Good enough ?

or do you waste your days since you are not in school ?

Many "students" learn to smoke crack in college or meth.

It doesn't necessarily impact you negatively. However, there's only a positive impact when you are surrounded by hundreds people your age in the same situation.

Yep, I have. I'm sure "most" (as in a majority, right?) are pursuing a degree so they can pursue a specific career they are interested in.

From my experience, the people that call college grads "stupid" or "just following the path they think they have to take in life" have an inferiority complex. And it's just silly. If you did well without a college education, good for you. It doesn't change the fact that on average, a college grad will be more successful than his uneducated counterpart. Simply look at income data based on education.

WOW I HOPE you didn't go to college. This is the most ignorant shit I have read in a loooong time. WOW. smh. College does not equal educated LOL educated does NOT mean college.

what a loser

You're incredibly retarded and ignorant. In fact, he's absolutely right and you're really making those people without a degree look stupid. I don't even see where he made the assertion that you're claiming. Please stop embarrassing yourself. It's called a random sample, or rather a representation of the majority of the population and again, he's 100% accurate. And the inferiority complex ROFL. You walked right into that one.

I never said college was for everyone.
but that is still to broad of a statement it still boils down to an individual. people have negative and positive experience in life whether in or not in college. so is life.

you were hammering on my point about me being 15 and knowing what i wanted to do with my career. this wasnt to brag. while some kids wanted to grow up and win an MLB championship or become a doctor i wanted to become successful at business. it became my hobby.

in high school i never cared for it and in my computer class i got 99%. i was always very good with computers. and so i took that and ran with it. i could have been lazy and blamed society because i did not enjoy school. but i did not, i just took a different path.

i have the same friends since i was very young, honestly to many to the point where i feel like i need some air and do get away. i date hot women and the generally enjoy my edge and different perspective. (this is in response to being socially inadequate for working on computers)

and you would be surprised at how many people with degrees talk to me like i am crazy or do not have the same knowledge as them. when in reality i can maintain a conversation no matter what the topic..

The only thing I was generalizing involved the people that make the same type of excuses for not going to school. "It's a waste, I don't need a degree, etc", the same people make the same kind of excuses. That's the ONLY generalization I made.

A Random sample does NOT make it a fact. Maybe truth but not a fact.

You are showing how much a waste it is to go to college. I believe education in certain things are very important BUT College was a system set up like prison. But wait i won't educate you. Truth and fact are different or didnt you learn that ?

In the 50's if you would of taken a "random" sample of jews in germany, you would of had a scared man. Did that make that person a coward ? or do you catch my drift ?

ROFL are you fucking kidding me? This is one of the most hilarious and dumbest posts I've ever read. First, tell me the difference between truth and fact, numbnuts. Go ahead. I want to see your stupidity at its finest. Next, I tell you that you're making the non degree people look bad, and you respond with the exact same insult.
How stupid are you?

How does scared equate to being a coward? I was completely off. You join TheDoc, Poed-Poster, and BFT3k as the dumbest people on this forum.

I have a BA but I'm man enough to admit it's worthless.

For a BA you only take a few actual classes in your "major".

A few books and a few hours worth of classes I took 15 years ago does not give me the right to think I'm smarter or better than anyone else.

But that's just me. Everyone is free to their own opinion.

A BA is pretty much worthless unless you plan to be a philosophy or English teacher.

Truth = Belief like when you believe there is only 1 way to skin a cat.

Fact= what is really is. Which is NOW that we have a global market and social networks ONLINE along with education. Which btw is changing minute by minute. We do not need the processes of yester year. You are like a polaroid. Just a snap shot of your own figment of your delusions.

Don't post stupid shit.
So you think that the core personality traits that make up who you are aren't developed by the age of 18? I'm not talking about what you know or what you want out of your life, but your actual personality traits (shy vs. outgoing, friendly vs. competitive, organized vs. careless, sensitive vs. secure, curious vs. cautious)

Obviously you grow as a person and you change your view on life but people's core personalities stay the same. You can control them and alter them but you have to do so consciously if it's not your natural trait.

I'm not discounting the benefits of college and their ability to make one grow as a person. However, going straight into the real world also makes you grow as a person, and I would venture to guess that going straight into the real world is more realistic than college life.

But hey, if you don't agree with my view, then you don't agree. All good.

Absolutely, 100%. Nobody I know or care to deal with is the same now as they were at 18. I was shy at 18. I went to college, I became social. I was insecure and became secure. I absolutely believe what I wrote.

That is where we disagree.

Yes, going straight into the real world builds up different character traits.
