it mainly comes from the comic book/ fantasy world. lots of comic books and some toons have been doing it for a while just to be a different style. basically it mixes victorian-age with industrial machinery or weapons. It's not fixed to victorian age, it can be any time period where the machines are emphasized as highly technological but often powered by steam.
Good examples are league of extraordinary gentlemen, and even games like bioshock. i think the videogame industry is making it cool. I havent seen steampunk fashion but i'm sure it makes guys look like sissies. my only guess is people dressing up like doctor who

It comes from a literary marriage of science fiction (generally cyberpunk) and Victoriana. You get technologically advanced, but with more steam engine than our world utilized. The fashion tends to be a mix of Victorian inspiration and more modern tech, clockwork pieces incorporated a plus, partly in tribute to H.G. Wells time travel and the concept that steampunk fashion is a sort of time travel. It is not new.

Here are some photos Forrest Black and I shot with steampunk themes:

If you really want to rock the Steam Punk vibe you need to check out Abney Park, the best and probably only SteamPunk band.

ya, steampunk is one of those weird little offshoot niches that has worked it's way into all sorts of little nooks and crannies. games, art, engineering, fashion. have seen some amazing paintings in the past done with a steampunk theme, and a lot of modern invention rebuilt in that industrial revolution styling. interesting stuff.

The original steampunk was a genre in science fiction novels, usually a type of alternate history.

The current fashion/art/game/movie steampunk stuff is lame by comparison. but memes are memes.

i think Jules Verne when i see these photos - very creative but imagine how much work and expense just for one photoset.

i like the vintage mechanical objects - our world today is all about sleek and minimalist design, kind of boring compared to the intricate pieces and parts of anything mechanical from 100 years and longer ago.

the goggles/eyeglasses rock - i'm sure those are going to catch on with the masses. i'm sure steampunk style has been around awhile but it's just hitting the mainstream.

Your eye is right on that, I think, Jules Verne is definitely iconic in the genre.

Alright, I'll admit to the geek factor here:

Although Verne, Wells and other early authors' work can be seen as seminal works upon which the SteamPunk genre was built, the first novel that brought SteamPunk as a genre to the fore was "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling in 1990, an alternative universe novel where Charles Babbages' proto-computer The Difference Engine was a success and led to a technology boom in the mid to late 1800s.

<------Ashamed of his dork-status.

I either love somebody's steampunk look or end up rolling my eyes into the back of my skull. For some reason there is little in between for me. It is for sure the in thing at the moment though. Even the new inside of the Tardis on Dr. Who is steampunk.

all the right answers have already been posted lol, BUT I will add, it's been HUGE in the 3D Toon world for the last 4 years now, I've stayed away from it myself, just cause it got bit oversatured in the mainstream 3D Toon world, PLUS it's a bit hard to pull off legit porn once you take off the outfits lol

The idea of steampunk is like an alternate history thing where technological development continued along the lines of the steam engine and the vacuum tube.

The internal combustion engine and the transistor where never invented.
