I'm confused. I thought you wanted them to be legal citizens. What difference does it make how they become legal, as long as they become legal? As I have understood our many debates on this, I was under the impression that legality was the final goal. Is it not? Must they bring $$$$ or go through some tortuous process to prove their love for America? What more do you ask other than legality?

Many jobs have linguistic requirements. Teachers aren't special. Free lunches? Well, I'll tell you what.... one illegal Mexican kid is entitled to a full school system lunch every day that he's there because I never once ate the "free" lunch that the schools provided for us. So there, I've done my part and made my sacrifice toward the greater good already.

I'm still on the fence, no pun intended. I'm really neither for or against putting up a wall. On the one hand, it would work. On the other, there's something very disturbing to me about living behind a wall. I was serving in Germany from 88-90 when the wall came down. So the idea of putting one up here really bothers me.

I'll be honest...I would very much enjoy the day that I see Hispanic people and not know whether they are illegal aliens or not and know that a significant percentage of them probably are illegal (given I'm in San Diego). As it is, there are a few dozen Hispanic people that hang out at the street corner by where I live, basically there to be picked up to do jobs for people. I've never gone up to talk to them or anything so I have no idea if they're legal or not, but what I'm saying is I'd love the day when I can actually assume they ARE legal because there'd be so few ILLEGAL immigrants. I'm sure police would love that day too. Unless something is done, that day isn't going to come. If Mexico could somehow fix the problem, that would be the best solution, but everyone knows they never will, so it's up to the US to fix it. The federal government clearly isn't bothered enough to fix it, so AZ is trying to do what is in their power to at least fix the issue for their state. It won't fix the national problem obviously because they'll spill over into other states, but that's not AZ's concern nor should it be. They are elected to look out for the state's best interests, and their best interest is to stop making all the low-lower middle class people poorer through paying for a bunch of people that shouldn't be here in the first place.

Yes, there's a slim chance that a legal Hispanic citizen gets profiled and stopped by police for some bullshit reason (which already happens to Hispanics, blacks, etc. as you know) and asked for their ID (which already would happen in those cases, only now they can ask for passport), and there's a slim chance after that AZ law going into effect that a legal Hispanic citizen there (who BTW is more than likely already well aware of the legal system having had to jump through many hoops to legally get in this country), would somehow not think to have their passport/ID on them, get arrested until they're found to be legal and then released. Then there's a slim chance that despite likely being aware that they should have been carrying their ID on them to prevent this situation, they sue.

There's also many circumstances in which doctors could face lawsuits for medical malpractice for suggesting a medical procedure that had a chance of failure and failed, and probably a bunch of other cases of such legal issues that people in many professions, companies, and the government all deal with. So should everyone just not do anything to solve problems in fear of possibility of lawsuits?

I understand the whole slippery slope argument against this, but I just don't know if this will cause any more racial profiling against Hispanics in AZ than what already exists, only now if they're found to be illegal, they'll get deported, and if they were legal and for whatever reason after a law is passed requiring them to carry ID they didn't, then they'll be detained until they're found to be legal and then released. I mean no innocent people have ever been detained for anything before this law passed...never!

As it is, I and everyone else have to carry my driver's license when I'm driving about. I've memorized the number and once a few years ago, I got stopped by a cop because my tags weren't up to date (was still waiting for them in the mail) and I didn't have my license but gave him my license #. Hey guess what? I got a ticket for not having my license on me! Young white male getting a ticket for not having ID even though I had proof of who I was and that I could legally drive...it happens!

I don't know. I'm no expert. Maybe they really are all criminals and drug mules and gangsters. Just seems more plausible to me that what's going on is not one problem, but two.

Problem Group #1: What we'll call "legitimate" illegals. People that have nothing but the clothes on their backs, crossing over hoping to survive and get a $2 buck per day job somewhere. Maybe over time he assumes the identity of a dead guy or something (yes, illegally. There's no way to legally assume the identity of someone else). He pays taxes and social security (under someone else's name, again illegally since there's no way to legally do that), raises a family, shops at Target, buys cars, tv, clothing, groceries, etc.. These are the people accused of "draining" the system, when in reality they are doing exactly what they'd be doing if they had "LEGAL" stamped on their foreheads.

Problem Group #2: The Drug War. People from PG1 getting caught up in it, forced to mule over the border, or wind up working for them.


Solution To PG1: Fix Mexico from the top down. Make the legal immigration process so that actual humans have a chance at it, not just a select privileged few. Set up some sort of asylum/embassy collection points down in the heavily troubled border areas to screen & deal with people trying to escape that shit from Mexico. (because it's OUR border, that makes it OUR problem.) Give them some sort of opportunity or process to become legal, right there, on the spot as well as consequences for any documented criminals they come across. Give the ones already living and working here, the ones that are very obviously established who have children who have never known any other home, some way to become legal without fear of deportation for exposing themselves.

Solution To PG2: End prohibition. Fence and arm the entire border.


Like I said, I don't know. Maybe Arizona just needs to Man-up and stop whining so much. I mean, CA NM & TX border Mexico too. But the only one we ever hear crying is Arizona.

There are far easier ways to limit the number of illegals coming across the borders.

1. In the late 60s I saw the border between Czech and Austria. I saw it's remains again in the late 90s. It was a km wide "no mans" land type border with barbed wire fences on both sides and traps to stop cars or lorries from busting across. It also had machine gun towers with guards. Later learned a lot of it was mined and had motion sensors. If the poor Eastern Europeans could do it why can't the US?

It stopped most from getting across. I've seen the border between CA and Mexico, it does not compare. This type of border will also reduce a lot of drugs being smuggled across.

2. The incentive to come across is economic. They want work. So penalise anyone giving them work. People employing illegals as maids, gardeners, field hands, laborers or is any other capacity. Fine them heavily or/and imprisonment. Fines should be enough to fund the border control police. You may have to pay more for your produce or labor to pay for the higher labor costs, but it will deter more form employing them.

3. Anyone in a country illegally has no right to any social benefits. No hospital, welfare, eduction etc.

4. Anchor babies can go back with their parents or be adopted. The choice is with the parents.
