.xxx extortion???
Forgive me guys if this has been gone over before because I havent been keeping up with it as close as I should I guess.
Recently got the below email from a registrar which appears to me as extortion. I have domains with several registrars but this is the only one to send an email like this. Seems like a big money grab even if nobody actually uses the .xxx extensions. Quote:

I am going to stick with the .coms.
I think .XXX will be a major fail. Too many conflicts with existing trademark holders to be successful in my opinion. Just write ICM and put them on notice that if they sell your mark, you will sue for damages. |

Got the same email from gandi 2 weeks ago. I had 72 domains there and moved them all away.
To be honest, this is actually a good sign. The ICM knows their intended audience is not interested in buying .xxx domains so now they are trying to scare mainstream businesses in paying some useless protection fee. On Gandi: As a registrar offering your clients the ability to register .xxx domains is one thing. Spreading FUD to scare your clients into buying protecting is whole other thing. Fuck the .xxx tld, fuck the icm registry, fuck gandi. |

If the blockage was meant for every single extension it would be common sense. But with .xxx only, imagine the headlines.

Maybe Islamic militants will find out ICM Registry is going to mock their religion with Islam.XXX, Muslim.XXX, Quran.XXX or Muhammed.XXX These types of names will probably not be eligible for brand protection. Salman Rushdie was put on a global hit list for writing "The Satanic Verses".

"The registry in charge of this extension will allow registered trademark holders to 'block' domains corresponding to their trademark so that is is not used by third parties who wish to profit of the notoriety of the said trademark in order to exploit it for adult entertainment purposes."
Isn't this redundant? Suddenly trademark holders need to buy a .xxx domain to protect their trademark? That makes no sense to me. |

All .XXX websites contain viruses inherently. Their business model is designed to force surfers to buy expensive virus protection software, otherwise their computers will be attacked.
Surfers aren't going to like these gangster-like methods devised by the .XXX thieves. It is clearly MUCH SAFER to just visit the tried-and-true .COM websites. Damn, I just got another fucking virus visiting a .XXX site! Thieving Fuckers! Someone should block all of these .XXX sites. I don't want my kids visiting them, that's for sure! Feel free to pass on this misinformation. Get your message out before they do. Protect your investments! Also, did you know that all profits from .XXX domain names are funneled into terrorist groups, determined to attack the US! (or maybe not - who knows for sure?) |

You should put my video on one screen and listen while you work, this is covered. In a nutshell, no one is forcing anyone with a trademarked name to buy .xxx. They are allowing you to purchase the domain and not use it for about $200. You can pass up the offer and if someone buys the .xxx version of your trademarked name you can spend a few grand to get it back.

They figure the price of 200 per domain or the price it will cost you for an attorney to send a C&D.. which one is cheaper for you?
Get enough people together and you could do a class action of sorts.. i'm not lawyer but anything can happen in todays world.

Uh, it's exactly like extortion. Pay $200 or something bad will happen to you. If the adult community doesn't buy into the xxx scheme maybe they can scare mainstream into paying "protection money".

I'm certainly not pro .xxx, but I really don't understand all this talk about extortion.. With any other tld out there, you either buy up all your domains on them or you don't.. If you don't, someone else can come along and use them... With .xxx they're providing a way to block anyone from using it while not having to buy and renew it every year so you end up saving money in the long run.

Very nice of them to give pattysflowershop.com a bargain of only $200 to protect her name from the " primary extension for websites of companies in the adult entertainment industry and so that is not used by third parties who wish to profit of the notoriety of the said trademark in order to exploit it for adult entertainment purposes". Sorry, at the very least I see a sales pitch here. It appears to me they are trying to scare mainstream into purchasing "protection". In the spiel the email used the "concrete" example they were protecting gandi.net against the sinister perverts. But my question is why? Why is there a need to protect that name from an adult site "capitalizing on the trademark"....it makes no sense. It is a scare tactic to drum up a few dollars...period. If it wasn't, why wouldn't they send out an email like this with every new tld? I havent listened to baddog's video because I dont really give a shit. He may have great insight but he seems like a crotchety old fuck and a legend in his own mind. ![]() .

There's a difference between "common sense" on the one hand and ignoring the fact that we are dealing here with an organization here that has lied about just about anything and buying into the rationalizations that ICM is using on the other hand.

I am as anxious to order my .xxx as I was to order my .biz and .ws extensions.
Oh wait, I don't own any .ws and .biz on my domains. If most of us don't even both registering the .net (unless we have a huge traffic site), why the hell would we get the .xxx unless its mandatory? |

Fuck paying ICM:
http://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/teas/index.jsp Register your sites name as a trademark for a one-time fee of $325 online and then go through the dispute process when and if someone registers the .xxx. Plus it'll protect you for all of the other extensions you do not want to defensively register...if you are willing to go through the dispute process once someone does. |

ICM? Someone else? If ICM, aren't they doing what they promised (to send traffic to .xxx sites). I think you are giving them far too much credit if you think the general public thinks .xxx is the premier tld for adult.

the point is, that when i own bigboobs.com i dont give a shit if someone owns bigboobs.in - because .in is worthless for adult traffic. but i do give a shit if someone but me owns bigboobs.xxx - in case .xxx turns out to be a success. so i am right at this point extorted into buying or blocking that domain to protect my .com and my income. and because i cannot register a trademark for bigboobs.com, i have no other chance to get it later. do you understand me now?
