So they host legit adult sites/programs and the very torrents/tubes that steal from them... the good, the bad and the ugly.

To add insult to injury, RCN have current back ups of our site (as well as everyone else on their network) available to them, yet requests to do a server copy of our backup to our new server have gone ignored. Every hour is costing us a lot of money and I can not tell you how frustrating this is for me as a long-term, loyal customer.

This leads me to wonder one of two questions.

1/ Did their backup servers with our sites data get hosed as well? It would make sense considering the length of time it is taking them to bring sites back, in fact can anyone clarify if their server has been brought back up yet? I would assume that their site (http://www.realitychecknetwork.com/) would have been one of the first they would bring back online. Are they spending all this time doing data-recovery on hard drives?

2/ Assuming they do have all our backups, why would they not quickly try to rectify this by ftp'ing the files we need to our new server so we can be back in business?

Disclaimer: I have been a loyal customer of RCN and have almost never been disappointed by their service, but their damage control response to this incident looks like it is going to put a lot of us out of business.

Unfortunately it seems those of us that have jumped and reacted by purchasing a new server on another network to migrate to are not getting the support we require.

That excuse of rogue employee does not fly.

Each server hace their own user/pass, that user of said server should change once delivered to them.

In the case that the host creates an admin account on the server , it is never the same password for all boxes ... please, if it is , someone seriously screwed up .

And user should delete that admin account , as he can always give his unique password to the host in case of necessity, changing it afterwards.

How many employees come and go in a datacenter ???

PS: I do not offer new adult hosting, so this is NOT a sollicitation for new accounts. Please do NOT contact me.

Hostgator does not colo with the planet. They flat out rent servers from them.

If you have so much space why bother going through a middleman for the space and network? You should surely be able to get better rates direct with the facility and network directly.

I am guessing you are not aware with exactly how a managed service works. Sure you can have a different/unique root password on each server, by all means you should.

However that would be a nightmare to manage and most large organizations utilize ssh keys. Now along with ssh keys the practice of rotating those keys daily should be part of operations to prevent things like rogue employees from doing things like this.

Our business is Servers, and support. I don't need to own the facility or deal with all that stuff. What we do works great for us and our clients are very happy with quality of service and support they get.

Like I said, my message was sincere. Funny how everyone on here always have to bash others.

So lame.

The downtime is probably because they're searching through backups as well and dont want to put them online till they're sure they're clean.

I agree with the managed issue.
But again, the ssh could be made accessible only from a certain range of IP addresses ( the one of the staff in the dc ... ) .

Quote:
Disabling remote root login
Once user logins are working, you want to deactivate direct login as root via network. This is generally a good idea as it makes it even harder for anyone to really exploit some possible vulnerabilites in the ssh daemon. While your instance is already quite secure with no password login and ssh keys, it is always better to be safe than sorry. First you have to give a password for the root account, if your Linux doesn't use the sudo mechanism, as Ubuntu does. In this case you don't have to give root a password. Just log into your user account and try "sudo -s". It asks for your password and then you should be root. For Linuxes which doesn't use sudo, like SuSE, give root a password, log in as user and try "su -" with root's password. If either su or sudo works, you can de-activate remote root access in /etc/ssh/sshd_config with setting "PermitRootLogin" to "no". Of course there's other means to secure your server even more -- which would go too far for this instalment, like preventing most users to gain root rights at all
http://blog.taggesell.de/index.php?/...instances.html

After a bad experience on one box, I now unmount automatically the backup drive, only to mount it before the next backup, preventing wjat happened, ie : all backup main.html, index.html.index.php to be changed...

Iam sure they are doing all they can and even moe to get their network bacxkup ... sucks hard for them .

Most, if not all hosts have what are called a "jumpbox". Essentially, it's a box that's allowed to go to all servers in their possession. Each employee has/should have it's own ssh key, however, some utilise an "universal" key thats on the jumpbox that everyone uses, as it eases handling and changing of the key (ofc, there's way more possible ways to set these things up etc).
I don't buy the rogue ex employee either, but by the state of the network, i'd guess they noticed someone hacked the main box with keys and all shit broke after that. They took it all down, and are combing everything for the noticed backdoor. Sadly, if it's something like that, its a big fail.

..And using ssh keys, they could implement the hard token system of RSA Security.

I wasn't even aware they hosted those sites. Now that you mention it that kinda does suck.

So they don't change passwords, ssh keys and so forth after exployees leave ?

That's fucked up.

Business 101. Disgruntled employees can cause havoc, take their keys away when they leave.

new update via email:

Quote:
We are in the process of restoring customers. We are doing our best to manage the queue both by customer size as well as ease of restore.

Currently we have separate queues setup, one to deal with customers whose restores are quick, this way we can get them online or provide them access to their data, the other is for large customers where the process is more involved. We understand that everyone is looking for a more consistent response, we are doing our best to keep up with customer inquiries.

If you do not get a response via ICQ, or phone, please wait 30 mins and try again.

Thank you,
Moisey Uretsky

Do you really think people don't know how to find a new host if they want one ?

I don't buy the rogue ex employee either, but by the state of the network, i'd guess they noticed someone hacked the main box with keys and all shit broke after that. They took it all down, and are combing everything for the noticed backdoor. Sadly, if it's something like that, its a big fail.
Any company that has this sort of system, should also have it secured to specific IP addresses only. Not the techs private home IP's, but a SINGULAR VPN IP Address.

The VPN should be certificate based as well for additional security. The only way to access any company resources would be via this singular VPN IP address.
All other IP's would not have any access of any sort.

Then once an employee leaves, simply remove VPN access. No passwords to crack as its all based on secure encrypted certificates (similar to SSL certificates).

People are down, just trying to help out here. Black & White. Already hooked up a bunch!

I think what happened to RCN totally sucks for them and their clients!

So easy to bash, just trying to fight the good fight.

Anyway...you all have a good night!

This is a horrific issue for RCN and their clients. I truly hope that the restore process that is now underway is going smoothly and that sites are back online as soon as physically possible.

Seems you also plagiarize content from Webairs web site:

From GetInSpace.com -

Quote:
Redundant 4000 AMP, 480-volt electrical feeds, power our data center. This system provides automatic switching between two independent transformers located in the basement. Besides a total of one megawatt of redundant UPS power, our facility houses a fully redundant 2,400 AMP, -48V, positive ground DC telco power plant and distribution system. This system currently powers all fiber providers as well as carriers in our facility..................

So Get In Space have been around since 1995, bullshit, you are here trying to help people out, bullshit, you can't even write your own copy on your own web site.

If I was looking at hosting with anyone else than my current host then I would disregard your services based on the fact that you aren't imaginative enough to explain your services without ripping off content from elsewhere.

Stay the fuck out of this thread with your amateurish efforts to gain more customers, as I said earlier, there are always bottom feeders prepared to come out during issues like this and you sir are acting as slimy as fuck

Edit: Your pricing isn't even remotely competitive.
