ebay: totally useless for canadians..

why are so many us sellers afraid to ship to canada? we aren't some crazy backwards country...makes ebay useless. find a great item, oh no they don't ship to canada over and over again...and when you do find one they are in asia or something.

because there is a "only ship to us" button. otherwise you have to bother with international shipping and setting up other options, etc.

canada looses because of an easy button.

Canada grows Industrial Hemp

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/econ9631

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. The species was banned in North America in late 1930s because its leaves and flowers contained a hallucinogenic drug known as delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It was banned internationally in 1961 under the United Nations? Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Hemp does suffer from the ?snicker factor?, largely because of its hippy-dippy image and close association with marijuana, its conscious-altering cousin.

they used to grow a lot of it around where i used to live for a few years but no one seems to grow it anymore. it just wasn't profitable because the US has such a fear of it and not enough canadian companies were using it to support the growth.

I managed to place orders on those kind of ebay items in the past. You just have to make a connection with the seller and ask them how much it would be to ship to Canada.

I've never had a problem, though I haven't bought anything on ebay in a couple of years, but when I was using it I found most sellers were negotiable if you cover the full cost of shipping.

The industrial hemp production received a lot of attention in the early years. Advocates of hemp production painted a rather rosy picture for growth potential. However, the sudden demise of Consolidated Growers and Processors (CGP) Inc. of California left a large number of hemp growers in Manitoba sitting with a huge crop and nowhere to market it. This company was largely responsible for the rapid increase in acres in 1999 and the fallout in 2000. The company created a lot of interest and hype for hemp among producers, particularly in Manitoba. The CGP contracted an estimated 40 per cent of the total industrial hemp area licensed in Canada in 1999. However, the company went into receivership after failing to meet contractual obligations. This left the hemp producers with a huge surplus of hemp seed and fiber hanging over the market. This surplus was stored in warehouses and farmers? bins, awaiting bankruptcy settlement. A considerable portion of the hemp crop did not get sold and producers had to absorb the losses. Thus, the negative events of 1999 have brought a lot of skepticism and fear for the future growth potential of hemp industry in Canada. However, the downturn in hemp cultivation during the last three ?four years is buoyed by a steady increase in the processing of hemp, and the development of many small businesses engaged in developing new products and marketing of these products. In Alberta, work is well underway at Alberta Research Council (ARC) and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (AARD) to evaluate hemp as a potential source of producing pulp and fiber.

Want a real answer now?

It's because eBay is unbelievable anal about their seller ratings which effect where you show up in the results. Losing a fraction of a point can be the difference between $5,000 per month and $1,000 per month for some sellers.

The reason a lot will not ship outside of the US is because until very recently those stars that you could leave counted towards the sellers DSRs. Shipping to Canada is a bit slower and sometimes has problems at the border so it was safer for sellers to just do USA only and protect their scores / money.

Same thing for shipping price, it's hard to ship heavy stuff to Canada for free because of a broken pricing system. Low scores on shipping cost is another rating.

Also, I know you're thinking that you wouldn't heave a bad rating for something so silly but that is assuming eBay was smart. They aren't. Out of 5 stars if everyone left the seller a 3 which translates to "good" they would be banned from selling on the site.

eBay fixed it now so outside of the country DSR's don't count against the score that determines your fees and exposure but not everyone is aware of this yet.

The real reason a lot of people won't ship to canada is because everyone and their brother on ebay is a retail location and not just mom and pop slinging shit on ebay for some extra cash. There are a lot of brand names that forbid US sellers from selling to canadians because their retail prices are so much less than those found in canada. Apple, Vans, Fox, Thor, KTM are just some examples of companies that if you are a distributor in the US you will have signed an agreement to not distribute into canada. Are you going to risk losing your brands over a 20 dollar tshirt shipped to some hippy in canada? not likely.

Just email the seller...I bought items listed as "US only" for a few times and I'm in Europe. You will have to pay for the shipping, though.

Why are you on ebay shopping in the first place for an iPod if they sell them in canada? cause they are cheaper.. I didn't make the rules.. I just relay some stuff from ebay for a buddy in canada once in a while for this exact same reason. Find a friend in the US to do the same if you want. It's true tho, he has shown me the exact same sneakers here in the states for $150+ cheaper then they can be purchased in canada.

its not about which currency cost more. In Europe most of the stuff cost more than in US and they don't say "why would we should pay more our currency is worth more" or whatever. Its way more complicated than that. US is bigger market hence they can get lower prices thats one. Second most of the brands (apple nike and whatever) are made i nChina and we know that because of dolar situation and debt situation between china and us, the states can get their stuff basicly for nothing - just print those dollars). Thats two. And many many more factors. Nothing to do with "oh our currency is worth the same" stuff

you have to understand most price differences between the US and canada used to be pretty much the currency difference. ex: when the loonie was 60 cents something that cost $100 in the US would cost $140 here ... as the loonie reached parity none of the prices have dropped.

I never had that problem. The only thing you have to watch out for is import and brokerage fees. Avoid UPS,FedEx,DHL.. stick with USPS for the states. Also get the seller to mark the value of the goods low so you don't get hit with import taxes

Most will go ahead and be willing if you msg them and let them know how easy it is. Majority of those who say they wont have never even tried and just assume because it's international it's harder.

Use ebay.ca and it filters out the sellers that won't send to Canadia...

Also, most sellers actually will if you message them.

The primary reason that I stopped selling to Ca. from the USA is that the Ca. buyers always wanted me to falsify the customs docs to show a lower price than the one for which the item sold.
