2. Find a new ISP whose policies jibe with your ideals.
3. Quit the interwebs.

Moving back to europe

Can't believe how much Canadians get fucked on services. Cell phones, TV, etc. It's terrible.

Being charged to recieve texts and phone calls at the same rates it costs to make them.

2 year tv contracts

3 year cell phone contracts with all kinds of fees

then if 3 years isn't bad enough if you want to use the web on your phone you get a terribly low amount of data.

Fucked up system.

This has nothing to do with out of control expenses for the ISP's or even network congestion caused by torrents. Bell already throttles torrent traffic down to about 20 kb during peak hours.

This has to do with them trying to control how we access digital content and them trying to force competitors out of business to keep their monopolies in place. And the CRTC trying in vain to hold onto their antiquated minimum "Canadian content" rules.

But hey, let's just open our wallets and keep paying more.

Many years ago I worked for the second cable company in the nation to offer internet access through cable (the first was in Boulder, CO and the second was Lawrence, KS and both were originally owned by the same company). I was one of the first who was trained to install and maintain infrastructure in the field through Scientific Atlanta.

Recently at home between the hours of 4-9 PM my download speeds used to take a massive dump. Conventional coax plant (cable and amps) have bandwidth limitations and we had reached that limit. After a couple of months of whining Time Warner extended fiber into our area and split the feed for our neighborhood.

It's true that network congestion isn't an issue at the headend but neighborhood-level plant congestion is a huge issue still. Upgrading plant is more expensive than you can fathom. Why shouldn't those that use so much bandwidth that it necessitates redesigning a neighborhood's cable system help offset the cost of the upgrades?

Hopefully that will be the case. Apparently he will make his decision by March. In the meantime I am going to use as much bandwidth as I possibly can just to spite Bell.

This is basically a tax on downloading, so yes, it has everything to do with this topic. The CRTC, (which is the equivalent to the FCC in the United States), is responsible for abolishing the restrictions.

Now, why would a government run agency step-in and suddenly make this decision? If you have a valid answer then you have grounds to debate on the subject.

Look at the income taxes for Canadian residents.

Look at their sales tax.

Look at their tax rate on alcohol and cigarettes.

Look at their gas prices.

The other day I downloaded a scene from a porn site while doing a review, it was 3.8GB.

My 125gb cap, divided by 31 days is 4gb per day I can download without paying an overage fee. So it's essentially very difficult to even do my job, let alone entertain myself and stay within their HIGHEST tier of cap.

Cash grab, duopoly, corrupt CRTC, and a weak society that can't stop anything from happening.

Our government is spending like $9 billion dollars on... FIGHTER JETS?! WTF DO WE NEED A FIGHTER JET FOR?!@%

How do you spite them? I've been getting $30 to $60 overage charges for the last few months. My new plan finally kicks in on my next bill (I hope - but I'm sure they managed to fuck something up), but its a joke that I have to pay more for less.

I'm paying twice as much for slightly faster speeds and less GBs of transfer than I was originally getting 10 / 11 years ago. Canadian free enterprise in action! Long live monopolies!

This is the problem here, not that the prices are going up, but that the service isn't getting much better for those higher prices.

Anyways I switched to Rogers 50mbps plan and it is alright, just don't think I should have to pay overages when I'm already paying $100 a month for the internet.

I currently have an unmetered plan from Bell that was grandfathered in, since I originally signed up for it before their cut-off date of 2007. (every plan after that will go by the new rules) Their top plan in my area was unmetered at that time and has been ever since.

If you have one of the old grandfathered unlimited plans with Bell, then supposedly you will be able to keep it, although they will be raising the price by $5. Most people aren't so lucky.

As one of the first people my area to get cable internet years ago, I was loving my crazy download and upload speeds with Cablevision. I've watched the service slowly deteriorate over the years, because as we all know, cable gets overloaded as the number of users increases, and now everyone and their fucking grandma has broadband.

In the last few months, I've been getting almost 1mbps down if I'm lucky. If its a day when everyone's inside, like a snow day or a Sunday night -- forget it. I couldn't do anything and it was almost like being back in the old phone modem days.

So Cablevision's advertising says my package should be 15mbps down and 5 up. I was getting 1/15th of what I supposed to -- and that is if I was having a good day. So I called them up to find out what the fuck was going on. Why have you not upgraded your service to handle all of the users?

The lady told me I could get the "boost" feature for an extra $9.95 a month. This would bring my speed up to 30mbps. So I ordered it, because what fucking choice do I actually have. They're the only game in town, as we don'tr have Fios yet.

Instantly, my speed went up to 28mbps down, and almost 8 up. So those fuckers had capped me down to 1mbps until I paid the extra 10bucks per month. It's sneaky and horrible business practice, but like i said, I don't have a choice. I'll speak with my wallet when Fios is available, and drop those fuckers -- along with a lot of other customers.
